Help Desk
Append the year of the record to the title of the source
When an individual has many sources, it is very helpful to be able to arrange the sources in chronological order to establish a time line for the life and family of that individual. I have been appending the year of the record in the sources attached to my family members for this purpose and think it would be useful for all patrons if the software would automatically append the date of the record to all source titles.
For example, see Edward Eugene Gardner (18 July 1888 - 12 August 1975 * KWCN-8P8) who as of this writing has 16 sources, several of which I have appended the date of the event in the record. Arranging the sources in chronological order, make much clearer what events in his life have sources, and helps the researcher understand what else needs to be done.
FamilySearch Response:
I try to arrange the sources in chronological order. Having an appended date would make it a little easier and it would also make it easier for other users to understand why the sources are in their order.  The "Click and drag" option that allows you to move the source to the exact position you want quickly. It is so good that I have abandoned the arrows.

Cemetary Research

Genealogists love cemeteries! Cemeteries can be critical for finding information related to the births and deaths of our ancestors. When there is a lack of records sometimes the only information we have will be on a gravestone. In this article we'll discuss four ways you can expand your cemetery research

Michigan Digital Newspaper Portal

Links provide access to either digitized versions of newspapers or links to digitized newspapers made available from a variety of sources.  Among these links are papers held by the Clarke Historical Library and also Michigan newspapers found in Chronicling America, a database maintained by the Library of Congress. The Library of Michigan has developed newspaper family histories that trace the connections between papers within a city.  Click [here] to see this resource.

How To Digitize Family History Cassette Tapes
For those of us lucky enough to have recordings on cassette tape with valuable family history information, finding a way to preserve those recordings for future generations can be a challenge. I'm pretty comfortable with technology but it still took me awhile to figure it out, so hopefully what I learned will help someone else.  Follow this link-click here.

The Wonders of Voter Registration Books
Voter Registration records are probably one of the most underused sources for family historians. If you're like me, you think, "So my ancestor registered to vote - big deal." These records never interested me until I started indexing a collection of Voter Registration books owned by the Historical Society in Greene County, Virginia.
Reading these dry and boring lists has shown me just how useful the Voter Registration books can be.

Are You Searching or Researching?
Are you up to date? From the old Standards Manual to the new Genealogy Standards the first component of the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) is different. Have you noticed? We used to say, "We conduct a reasonably exhaustive search." That's still true, but there's more. We conduct reasonably exhaustive research. Those two added letters bring much more to what others expect of us as genealogists and what we must expect of ourselves.  Learn more-click here.

MyHeritage Launches Breakthrough Global Name Translation™ Technology
I think this is a huge advancement in online searches for genealogy information. I saw the brand-new Global Name Translation demonstrated earlier today at the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) annual conference in Jerusalem and I am very impressed.
Global Name Translation is the easy way to search through MyHeritage's massive multilingual and international database of 6 billion family tree profiles and historical records.  Learn more, click here.

The Old Folks Home

After Father's death...Son decides to leave his mother to an old folks home.  He used to visit her once a month which later reduced to once a year.  One day son receives a call from old folks home.  The care-taker informs him that his mother is very serious and asks him to come visit her.

Son goes and finds his mother is very critical condition on the verge of death.  He asks his mother "Is there anything that I can do for you?"  Mother replies, "Please install some fans in this old folks home as there are none."

Son asks surprisingly, "You spent all your days without any fan and never complained about it.  Now that you are on the verge of death and have just a few hours left you tell me to do it, why?"

Mother says, "That's right.  I have managed with the heat, but I am concerned for you, when your children will send you here, I am afraid you will not be able to manage it."
