 Whats New in Family Search?

Free Historic Book Collection Online Hits 200,000th Milestone

Imagine a free virtual online library of rare historic books from all over the world to help you discover rich, unknown details about the lives of your ancestors. What if the historic book collections held by significant public libraries and venerable societies were the sources of these contributed books? You'd have a dynamic, priceless online repository of some of the greatest hidden historic treasures predominantly unknown to man. International, and a growing host of partnering libraries and organizations and volunteers, have announced today that they've reached the milestone of publishing 200,000 historic volumes online for free atbooks.FamilySearch.org. The growing online collection, which began in 2007, is invaluable to genealogists and family historians in finding their ancestors. Click here for more information.

Help Desk

Question:  Child not listed in proper birth order --- WHY?

I have one individual who has one daughter, not shown in proper birth order All of the children have good birth years given. Why is Lena displayed out of order?

Answer: Make sure the Birth or Christening date of the daughter has a standardized value.  Any events written by Ancestry to FamilyTree (FT) do not have standardized values so you have to go fix them in Family Tree afterwards.

Online Trees Are Clues--Clues--Not Gospel

When I'm stuck on a person or family and am seeming to make no headway, I will look and see if their name appears in any of the online trees on the various sites. Submitted trees are only as accurate as the compiler, the information they used, and their research methodology. Some compilers are careful about their research and others are not.  Click here to find suggestions when using online trees.

Short Lesson on Research Reports

Why create a research report? Isn't that overkill? Imagine you work a difficult problem for several months, then set it aside and work on something else. You come back to it in a couple of years later when more records are online or you can visit the Family History Library in Salt Lake, or you receive answers back from inquiries sent to record custodians.  Get some insight into how a very experienced genealogist works.   Click here to read more.

What makes a good source... beginner version

Much can be written about what is a good source and what isn't. The short version is... a original document, recorded as close to the time of an event and reported by the individuals who know the details of said event first hand.  Read more about "How to Prove It" - click here.

5 GREAT TIPS FOR YOUTH FAMILY HISTORY CONSULTANTS
1. Register your calling on LDS.org. Sign in to lds.org. Click on Resources, Under Callings click on "All Callings" on left sidebar click on "Family History Callings" scroll down to "Register Here" https://familysearch.org/consultant/profile

2. Get in the habit of checking out "What's New" at the top of FamilySearch; and don't forget to follow the FamilySearch "Blog" for recent news as well.

3. After Registering, go back to "Training for My Calling" (right above the "Register Here") link. Click on this link and you will be able to navigate to a collection of online resources to help you fulfill your calling.

4. Become familiar with Leland Moon's "SHORT" training videos. Go to FamilySearch, click on "Get Help", Click on Learning Center Video Courses, under Most Popular Courses click on first link, "Family Tree Training Lessons and Videos." Scout out the FamilySearch Family Tree Curriculum http://broadcast.lds.org/elearning/fhd/Community/en/FamilyTreeCurriculum /index.html

5. Working with your counterpart Family History Consultant, set up a training night for your group. Prior to beginning your research, start with a prayer in your heart. Seek out the assistance of the spirit of Elijah and invite your ancestors to assist you. They share your joy and experience your challenges; and, they want you to succeed!

Suggestion for Weekly Bulletin Thought
"No work is more of a protection to this Church than temple work and the family history research that supports it. No work is more spiritually refining. No work we do gives us more power. No work requires a higher standard of righteousness. Our labors in the temple cover us with a shield and a protection, both individually and as a people."

          Boyd K. Packer

Remember...

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED?

About a hundred years ago, a man looked at the morning newspaper and to his surprise and horror, read his name in the obituary column. The news papers had reported the death of the wrong person by mistake. His first response was shock. Am I here or there? When he regained his composure, his second thought was to find out what people had said about him. The obituary read, "Dynamite King Dies." And also "He was the merchant of death." This man was the inventor of dynamite and when he read the words "merchant of death," he asked himself a question, "Is this how I am going to be remembered?" He got in touch with his feelings and decided that this was not the way he wanted to be remembered. From that day on, he started working toward peace. His name was Alfred Nobel and he is remembered today by the great Nobel Prize.

Just as Alfred Nobel got in touch with his feelings and redefined his values, we should step back and do the same.

What is your legacy?

How would you like to be remembered?

Will you be spoken well of?

Will you be remembered with love and respect?

Will you be missed?
