 Whats New in Family Search?

Imminent makeover of FamilySearch Family Tree

For some time now, FamilySearch.org's Beta test site has been demonstrating a new "traditional" view of the Family Tree program. Family Tree has  expanded the amount of information displayed for each ancestor in Family Tree, and added new ways to decide how you want to view that information. Read on (click this link) for more detail on the changes and how they will guide you as you make connections with your ancestors.

Help Desk
Question: What are Legacy names with regard to temple name submission?

Answer: new.familysearch anf Family Tree both use the same temple list.  Therefore, closing access to new.familysearch does not in any way effect a patrons Family Tree temple list.  The same is not true, however, with Temple Ready and other systems in use prior to new.familysearch.  Temple Ready and new.familysearch are incompatible.  If a patron has names reserved under Temple Ready, those "Legacy" names must be transferred to Family Tree.  The process to do this is called "Claim Legacy."  A person may claim their own Legacy contributions or they may claim the Legacy contributions of a deceased, incapacitated or excommunicated family member.

The Real Reasons Why Your Immigrant Ancestors Changed Their Names

You've probably heard this story from at least one of your family members: "Your ancestors' names were changed by inspectors at Ellis Island."

Though this theory behind ancestral name changes is still a popular one, there is historical evidence that tells a different tale. So why do you stumble upon so many instances of ancestral surname changes while conducting family history research? We've decided to debunk the mythical Ellis Island name change story and provide you with the real truth behind the name changes of your immigrant ancestors and why you may not be able to find family members in your research activities.  Read more here.

Writing Your Family History
One of the most rewarding challenges I have accomplished in my genealogy journey has been the completion of my family history book. I am extremely passionate about recording family stories and I will encourage you at every opportunity. I have assembled some of my best advice, tips and tricks to help you in your journey to writing your family history book.  Follow the outline for complete guidance.

Attention Genealogists? Are You Shortchanging Your Family History?
Saying you have a brick wall because you have been looking everywhere online for info about a certain family member.
Adding names to your family tree because Great Aunt Mary said her grandfather's name was Samuel James Griffin? [If you had researched further you would have found out that apparently he went by the name Sam,
Have you studied and studied and studied each document you have found?
What about sharing some of your research issues with another genealogist?
Do you know the origin of each document that is in your file folders either in the file cabinet or on your computer?
Are there other things you know you haven't been doing?  Read more here.

Family History Consultants
How Can I Fulfill My Calling As a FamilyHistory Consultant?
Your fundamental duty as a consultant is to work individually with members to help them identify ancestors and provide temple ordinances for them. Reach out to members of your ward a few individuals or families at a time to help them become involved in family history.
You should particularly focus on those identified by the ward council or priesthood executive committee. As you regularly work with individuals and families in your ward you can, over time, have the opportunity to work with all ward members. Through your efforts you can help every member in your ward feel the blessings of family history work in their lives.  Click this link to learn more.

Suggestion for Weekly Bulletin Thought

"Here then is a great truth. In the pain, the agony, and the heroic endeavors of life, we pass through a refiner's fire, and the insignificant and the unimportant in our lives can melt away like dross and make our faith bright, intact, and strong."

-James E. Faust,

Remember...

Everyone has a Story in Life

A 24 year old boy seeing out from the train's window shouted...
"Dad, look the trees are going behind!"
Dad smiled and a young couple sitting nearby, looked at the 24 year old's childish behavior with pity, suddenly he again exclaimed...
"Dad, look the clouds are running with us!"  The couple couldn't resist and said to the old man...
"Why don't you take your son to a good doctor?"
The old man smiled and said...
"I did and we are just coming from the hospital, my son was blind from birth, he just got his eyes today.

Every single person on the planet has a story. Don't judge people before you truly know them. The truth might surprise you.
