 Whats New in Family Search?

What's New on FamilySearch-February, 2015

Steve Anderson

During RootsTech 2015, I heard a comment made by a FamilySearch representative that they were making about three changes a "day" to the program. My subjective observations through using the program, say that the statement is likely true. Click here to link to February changes.

Help Desk
Question: In regards to my kids, as a live person, I'm more non-existent than my dead ancestors!
Are there any plans to make a change in the way that living individuals will be handled on the FamilySearch site? I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that you should be able to also connect living individuals with other living family members(using the same ID Number across the board/site). Currently, because I'm not dead, my children can't use me or my account to link to our genealogy. They have to make up a position holder for my name(not my actual ID Number) and then link through to the data for my dead father.

Answer:  You will be able to share your private space records with other users.  Our intention is to, after we break our synchronization with NFS, allow you to share your living with others.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society and FamilySearch Announce an Historic Collaboration

New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) and FamilySearch, the family history arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, today announced a multi-year collaboration between the two nonprofit organizations and a sharing of online genealogical resources, establishing a milestone in the growing international family history industry. In a database exchange program, the two leading non-profits in the global genealogy business will now make available millions of new records containing billions of new searchable names to their many constituents.

What Did It Take to Become a Census Enumerator?

I found a fairly lengthy article that describes the application process. These applications would be wonderful genealogy finds... if they still exist. Does anyone know?

Here's the article which is also from the newspaper, Williamsport Sun-Gazette. This one is dated 14 Jan 1910 on page 8 in column 3. It can also be found on newspapers.com.  Interested - click here to see the census takers application.

Generasi.me Does Interactive Family Timelines

Generasi.me - a site that "replays the timeline of your ancestors' lives."  It's in color too (you know, a "bright shiny object" attracts my attention).  Watch the short submission video.  The site works with the FamilySearch Family Tree, and shows  which relatives of an ancestor are alive in a given year.  The presentation depends on accurate data for persons in the FamilySearch Family Tree.  A user can quickly determine which family members are alive in a specific year.  Try it at  http://generasi.me/

Fun and Challenging FamilySearch Family Tree Games

Interested in fun and challenging games and puzzels?  The is a website connected to FamilySearch.org's Family Tree program.  The games are really intriguing and engaging.  How well do you know your ancestors?  Try this site: https://ancestorguru.com/1/#/home

Capturing Family History with Email

This year's winner of the Innovator's Challenge at Rootstech 2015 is StoryWorth.  StoryWorth primarily uses email to help you capture your family history stories.  Each week, StoryWorth will email an interview question to your loved one. All your relative has to do is answer the question via email, or if writing is not their thing, they can respond to the question by telephone, recording their answer. Their reply to the question is uploaded to your personal page at StoryWorth. Very simple.  Read more about interviewing family, write a memoir,  keeping a digital journal, and more - click this link.

What you need to know about Google Earth Pro

On January 28, 2015 Google announced that Google Earth PRO is now available for FREE! Not just a free trial. Google is allowing everyone to get a free key to Google Earth Pro!

In the past the software fee was hundreds of dollars. But now you can get Google Earth Pro for free and gain the ability to do things like "measure 3D buildings, print high-resolution images for presentations or reports, and record HD movies" inside Google Earth.  See this issue of Genealogy Gems by Lisa Louise Cooke to learn more.

Family History Consultants
This web site (blog) contains examples of how to create a greater interest in family history for wards in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church). This site is not an approved site from or for the LDS church, but is only one ward's attempt to bring Family History into the lives of those interested members of the church.
The ideas presented here can help you, your family and your ward leaders learn more about family history and what the LDS Church has developed to assist you in creating and managing your own "Family Tree."  In the "Getting Started" section there is a letter / email that a member of the FH Committee will give you prior to our first visit in your home.  Click this link to see the entire program.
Suggestion for Weekly Bulletin Thought
"As I would cast my mind over the day, I would see evidence of what God had done for one of us that I had not recognized in the busy moments of the day. As that happened, and it happened often, I realized that trying to remember had allowed God to show me what He had done.

"More than gratitude began to grow in my heart. Testimony grew. I became ever more certain that our Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. I felt more gratitude for the softening and refining that come because of the Atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ. And I grew more confident that the Holy Ghost can bring all things to our remembrance-even things we did not notice or pay attention to when they happened"

The Elephant Rope

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. "Well," trainer said, "when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it's enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free."

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn't, they were stuck right where they were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.
