Question: Use of Hope Chest
I am a family history consultant for our ward. Our Stake leaders have been advocating the wide-spread use of Hope Chest (formerly Pandora's Hope Chest) software. Many members have downloaded it and are very enthused about how easy it is to get hundreds of names for temple work. I realize that the instructions say that each name should be carefully checked for accuracy and for duplicates, but I get the strong impression that those instructions are being ignored by most members, especially those who have not been properly trained in Family Tree. If that behavior continues, there will be a lot of duplication of ordinances. I thought a purpose of Family Tree was to eliminate duplication. Shouldn't Family Search put out some instructions on this?
Answer:
Hope Chest is an external product not associated with FamilySearch. I agree that it is an application that gives a false sense of discovery as many of these may not be related or real people. Especially when you go back very far - it goes way back.  (Ron Tanner-FamilySearch).

Family History Creates a "Museum of Me,"

Finding and connecting with one's ancestors amounts to creating a "Museum of Me," said Dennis C. Brimhall, CEO of FamilySearch International, as he welcomed attendees February 12 in the opening keynote session of the three-day RootsTech 2015 conference at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, deemed by organizers to be the largest family history conference in the world. "We've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what it is about family history that causes people to like it. And we've come to the realization that, for most people, it's simply the joy of discovery. It's the thrill of hunting and finding and learning something we didn't know before." -Dennis C. Brimhall, FamilySearch CEO

Discussion about the LDS 110 Year Rule
In doing Temple ordinances, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been asked to observe what is called "the 110 Year Rule."   If you work with patrons at a major Family History Library or Center as I do, you will quickly understand the need for such a rule. Many times, people who are unrelated to the deceased person will find the availability of the ordinance work and perform the ordinances. This often causes extreme emotional distress to the close relatives who cannot understand why someone who was unrelated or even only distantly related would do the Temple work for their father or mother, brother or sister etc. Unfortunately, in the scramble to find "Green Arrows," the Rule is frequently ignored.  Read more about new standards here.

The Real Reason Why Your Ancestors Didn't Smile in Old Photographs
Ever wonder why your ancestors aren't grinning from ear to ear in those faded black and white family portraits? Though there are many speculations and theories as to why people donned such serious looks in photographs during the 19th century, we've decided to debunk the myths to provide you with the truth behind those stern stares.  Read this blog post and learn more

New.FamilySearch.org finally taken down
After a two-year transition process, access to new.FamilySearch.org has been terminated. This includes user sign in as well as access through all public APIs (application programming interfaces). This step allows FamilySearch to begin the final phase of the transition, which includes the transfer and synchronization all of the remaining data from new.FamilySearch.org to its replacement, FamilySearch Family Tree. This ending phase of data testing, transfer, and retesting will take approximately one year to complete. Once this phase is completed in early 2016, FamilySearch Family Tree will be the sole repository for this information, and new.FamilySearch.org will be completely shut down.
Development on many highly desired features of FamilySearch Family Tree cannot begin until new.FamilySearch.org has reached its final milestone and is completely shut-off. At that point, work can begin on new features, such as:
  1. Merging of gateway ancestors and other people with large numbers of associated records.
  2. Highlighting and fixing data eccentricities, such as when a person appears to have been married before birth, a child is older than a parent, a child who is listed as the spouse of parent or grandparent, and so on.
  3. The ability for users to change the selected gender of an ancestor.
  4. The ability to see a spouse's ancestral line by default.

Remember...

The Cookie Thief

A woman was waiting at an airport one night, with several long hours before her flight. She hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.

She was engrossed in her book but happened to see, that the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be. . .grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between, which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene.

So she munched the cookies and watched the clock, as the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock. She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by, thinking, "If I wasn't so nice, I would blacken his eye."

With each cookie she took, he took one too, when only one was left, she wondered what he would do. With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half.

He offered her half, as he ate the other, she snatched it from him and thought... oooh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he's also rude, why he didn't even show any gratitude!

She had never known when she had been so galled, and sighed with relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate, refusing to look back at the thieving ingrate.

She boarded the plane, and sank in her seat, then she sought her book, which was almost complete. As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise, there was her bag of cookies, in front of her eyes.

If mine are here, she moaned in despair, the others were his, and he tried to share. Too late to apologize, she realized with grief, that she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief.
