New year, same concern: when will nFS be detached?
Although new.FamilySearch.org (nFS) has been (mostly) read-only for a good while, nFS is still affecting Family Tree in various ways that are problematic. nFS has had devastating effects on the records for a few families, and even though the likelihood of that for any specific family seems pretty low, the impact can be too enormous to risk.
Because of this state, I've resolved avoid making significant updates to Family Tree until this danger has passed. So I'm quite interested in getting an idea of when Family Tree will finally become independent of the nFS and any other automated updates which can cause large changes to the tree data. Any info on the status and outlook in this area?

As we have recently announced, and posted on the new.familysearch.org landing page, on Feb 1st all access to the site will be removed, then for the next few months we will work on cleaning things up. Final severance and removal will not be achieved until early 2016.

More Names Now Available with Family Tree Hinting Updates

On Tuesday, December 23rd FamilySearch released a new update of the hinting data viewable on an ancestor's detail page and in the descendancy view in the Family Tree. In this data update newly added or changed persons in the Family Tree have been hinted using all the newly available information. It also includes important new record sets, such as the Find-A-Grave collection, that have been recently published. Additionally, engineers and architects have made numerous advancements in the software algorithms which makes it possible for more than 14 million new hints to be identified. Users of the Family Tree may wish to visit their ancestor pages again and see if any new hints are displayed.  Learn more by clicking this link.

A New Look for the Traditional Pedigree View on Family Tree

The Landscape View will replace the traditional view under trees options in Family Tree.  This change could happen the week of January 12.   It will have the look and much of the same feel of the landscape view. It will also have some of the same functions that are found in the descendancy view, for example, data errors, hints, and so on. It also offers new options to change colors.  Read about other significant changes by going to this link.

Suggestion for Weekly Bulletin Thought
Our opportunities to give of ourselves are indeed limitless, but they are also perishable. There are hearts to gladden. There are kind words to say. There are gifts to be given. There are deeds to be done. There are souls to be saved.

The two pebbles

Many years ago in a small Italian town, a merchant had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to the moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful daughter, so he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the merchant's debt if he could marry the daughter. Both the merchant and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. The moneylender told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty bag. The girl would then have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become the moneylender's wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble, she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven. But, if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were standing on a pebble-strewn path in the merchant's garden. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick her pebble from the bag.The girl put her hand into the bag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked."Sometimes it is necessary to think out of the box or, in this case, out of the bag.
