The inspiration behind the Power of 5, a project that raises money for a scholarship fund to send Nepali girls to school, came to Denise after watching the documentary Half The Sky:Turning Oppression into Opportunity For Women Worldwide. The film features interviews with women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable and fighting bravely to change them. Feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the difficulties these women and girls faced Denise and her co-workers at Ganesh Himal Trading committed themselves to raising money and awareness for these young impoverished girls in Nepal who want to go to school, giving them access to education, empowering them and helping them from being trapped in lives of desperation. That was the seed planted by Half the Sky that blossomed into the Power of 5 campaign.
Because the documentary Half the Sky was so impactful, Ganesh Himal Trading is bringing it to the Magic Lantern Theater during the Festival of Fair Trade. "People who come to the Festival of Fair Trade are those that want to learn and participate in creating a better world" says Denise Attwood, "we want to give them access to ways of learning that will help them understand our power to make change, viewing Half The Sky will do that. Fair Trade and education of young impoverished girls goes hand in hand. We want our customers to understand that and be participants in making it happen." Prior to the movie, Denise will speak on "Moving Beyond Paralysis: Steps for Making Positive Change."
