In a recent study in the journal of Psychological Science, psychological scientists at the University of Kansas studied the potential benefits of smiling by looking at the effects different types of smiling have on individuals ability to recover from stress.

So does the old adage, 'grin and bear it' have any merit in changing moods and helping a person through a tough time?

Researchers Tara Kraft and Sarah Pressman examined both genuine smiles as well as standard smiles and measured their ability to affect individuals ability to recover from episodes of stress.

Their findings of the study suggest that smiling may actually influence our physical state. Whether a 'fake' smile or a 'real' smile, both were shown to help reduce the intensity of the body's reaction to stress with lower heart rates and self reported stress levels. Interesting too was that even a quick smile changed the bodies chemistry to a more healthful state.

So even if you don't feel happy, right now...just grin and bear it. You might be administering yourself a prescription of health through your smile.

A smile is a powerful weapon; you can even break ice with it.  ~Author Unknown
