January Program: Southwest Library Presentation and Tour

Where: Louisville Free Southwest Library 9725 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY USA 40272
Special note: The lecture begins promptly at 6:30 pm. Please plan extra travel time due to evening traffic.
Program Description:
Colin Drake, Project Architect, will present on the Libraries of Our Future: The Story of the Architecture of the Southwest Library.
Project Description: The Louisville Southwest Regional Library is the first of three new regional libraries strategically positioned to serve the suburban regions of Metro Louisville. The project was a true design collaboration between the Louisville Free Public Library's design team, JRA Architects, and MSR of Minneapolis. Over 120,000 books and media offerings are available in a building that aspires to be a vessel for daylight. The exterior was inspired by the act of discovery, with symbolic metal curtains that are peeled away to reveal greater knowledge within. The surrounding site re-imagines the suburban parking lot as a vessel for rainwater, allowing the property to collect and infiltrate all of the water from several surrounding properties to relieve the burden on the municipal system. Supreme adaptability drove the interior arrangement to allow the facility to react to rapid changes in library programming. Outside, a variety of earth tone materials were selected for their durability, texture, and depth, allowing daylight and shadow to animate the facade throughout the day. The entire project was meant as a new model of sustainability for Louisville, as the project expects to receive LEED Gold certification. Most importantly, the new Southwest Regional Library aspires to be a landmark in the community for generations to come, offering lifelong learning to its users and acting as a catalyst for future neighborhood development.

Gauging Interest for Creating ARE Study Groups |
The AIA-CKC IDP Committee is trying to gauge the interest for creating ARE study groups.
For those that are interested, please e-mail your contact information as well as what ARE divisions you are interested in reviewing & your availability to meet, i.e. after work, weekends, etc. Ideally a study group would consist of 3-5 members per ARE division. Based on the responses that are received, we'll look to help create study groups based on ARE division interests and meeting availabilities. Jean-Paul Grivas, AIA, IDP Chairman, jpgrivas@pdmarchitects.com
Please forward this information to people in your office or that you may know who are studying for the ARE who may not be getting these AIA email announcements

AIA/CSI Trade Fair - Call for Drawings and Models for Display at the Trade Fair
|
 Looking for Louisville's Architectural History
The 2015 AIA-CSI Trade Fair is right around the corner. Our theme this year is "From The Vault". We are asking our membership to browse their personal and corporate archives to find some of the best drawings, models, photographs, and publications of past historical, award winning and architecturally significant local and regional projects to display around the trade fair exhibit floor. From drawings of the original L&N Building , Churchill Downs, and other historical Louisville buildings, to original models of 1970's and 80's skyline anchors such as the Humana Building are prime candidates to be presented on display as homage to our robust architectural heritage. We encourage you to dust off that old model sitting on top of the lateral file in your conference room and bring it down to bask in the appreciation of our loyal and emerging Trade Fair attendees. All suggestions and entries will be considered! The Trade Fair committee will cover any cost of reproduction, provide easels and display protection for models and other unique archives you may have hanging around the dark corners of your office! Submissions will receive mention in the program, acknowledgement signage at point-of-display as well as a note of thanks at the luncheon.
Please contact Trade Show Committee Chair, Brian Koetter, bkoetter@stengelhill.com or 502-893-1875 with entry suggestions.

Please note the AIA/Central Kentucky Chapter post office box has changed. After all of these years, Roger Adkins is retiring from his position as treasurer for life. With that, we are giving up the P.O. Box that was so convenient to Roger and we now have a new P.O. Box more convenient to our new treasurer Chris Bowling. In this age of email and the web, this may not affect anyone reading this, but we just wanted to let you know in case you ever decided to send us a letter the old fashioned way. Our new P.O. box is listed below.
