May 7, 2013

Greetings!

AIA Kentucky's 50th Anniversary "Architecture 50:50" program has taken an exciting turn! We've signed on as a host sponsor of the broadcast of 10 Buildings that aiaket logos Changed America, a PBS program scheduled to air Sunday, May 12 at 10:00 p.m. and at additional times as shown below. In connection with this, KET will be promoting our online public voting project that is already underway as well as their own initiative to hold a juried competition to select "10 Buildings that Changed Louisville." Both projects will utilize nominations received via the online nomination process that we've had up online since earlier this spring, which some of you have already visited to nominate your projects. We've co-branded the online nomination form to reflect this partnership and extended the nomination deadline to June 15, 2013.

What does this mean for you? KET's programming reaches nearly a million viewers statewide. KET will be airing promotional teasers encouraging the general public to nominate their favorite Kentucky architecture at www.kyarchitecture.org. And AIA Kentucky will be featured in a 15-second underwriting spot for the "10 Buildings" program as well as a selected group of other programs with expected high viewership on KET (see list below).

Photos and text will be compiled on all nominated projects, with the help of student interns working this summer at KET who may be contacting you requesting photographs or other information. Once nominations close, an AIA Kentucky Selection Committee will identify 50 projects from among those nominated. These will be posted online in August and September and the public will be invited to vote for their favorites. KET will air promotional announcements encouraging online voting throughout this time, and we'll also be heavily promoting this via both traditional print and broadcast outlets and social media.

Members have been asking AIA to tell the public who we are and what we do. This joint effort of AIA KY and KET will emphasize Kentucky Architecture to a wide audience from now through November. While we are hopeful that KET viewers and other non-architects will go online and nominate buildings across the state, we want to make sure YOUR great buildings are included.

This is your chance to showcase the best of what you do to a large audience.

Make Your Nomination Now!

Please nominate your best Kentucky projects, especially those that you know have had a significant impact on neighborhoods, communities, or perhaps a specific population. It is a very simple process that can be completed in less than 10 minutes.

May 22 CE Workshop Features AIA President Mickey Jacob, FAIA & Sustainability Charrette
AIA Kentucky, Bluegrass ASHRAE and Kentucky USGBC have once again joined together to present another in an ongoing series of workshops to further the Kentucky A/E/C industry's understanding of high performance design and building. With assistance from the Kentucky Finance & Administration Cabinet, we will hold the event at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in Frankfort on Wednesday, May 22.

The opening Featured Keynote Presenters will be the distinguished national leaders of AIA, ASHRAE and USGBC.  Each will give a brief presentation, followed by a free-wheeling panel discussion/Q & A on integrated design and other topics of interest to attendees.

The morning will continue with a fast-paced presentation on "What's Hot in Sustainability" by former ASHRAE President Terry Townsend.  Topics will include the 2030 Challenge, ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guidelines, LEED v. 4 Update, Energy Codes, Integrated Design and more.

Lunch will be provided. During this break, attendees will visit with our Exhibiting Sponsors whose products and services support integrated design and sustainability goals.

The afternoon will introduce the Sustainability Charrette that incorporates early analysis of the interrelationships among building systems to achieve a high-performance and cost-effective project. We will highlight the roles of various project team members (energy modelers who use "simple box" energy modeling, engineers and architects developing life cycle costing, local utilities, and owners) in establishing goals and making decisions before any wall is ever drawn on a floor plan. Two case studies will demonstrate these applications and lessons learned.

March ABI Shows Improved Business Conditions

Business conditions at architecture firms improved for the eighth consecutive month in March, with an Architecture Billings Index (ABI) of score 51.9. (Any score over 50 indicates billings growth.) While the pace of firm billings growth slowed slightly from the previous two months, inquiries into new projects remain very strong, and more firms reported an increase in the value of new design contracts than in February. In addition, backlogs at architecture firms have risen to an average of five months, up from 4.5 months in December 2012 and the highest they have been since the AIA started tracking that information on a quarterly basis at the end of 2010.
