Support Food Bank of Delaware's Holiday
Food Drives

Help make the holiday season bright for families in need this year. The Food Bank of Delaware is asking for the public's assistance in making sure that no Delawarean goes without a holiday meal this season. This year will be a difficult one throughout the state of Delaware as more families struggle to afford food. Businesses, schools, faith-based organizations and other community groups are encouraged to organize food drives throughout the holiday season.

Can't organize a food drive? Click  here to make a donation to the holiday food drive. Just $1 provides two meals! Food collected through the holiday drive will be used to create "Thanksgiving For All" holiday meal boxes.

The Lightship Overfalls by Phil Martin
Lightship Overfalls, Lewes, DE
Commissioned in 1938, the lightship now known as Overfalls saw service in Long Island Sound, at Martha's Vineyard, and finally at the entrance to Boston Harbor. She was donated to the Lewes Historical Society in 1973, after which followed a long saga to restore and preserve her. The ship is on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in June of 2011. I happened upon her while wandering along the Lewes Canal, and was immediately fascinated by the vessel.

FEATURED BOOMERS: Bob and Jayne Holmes

"Locals Now!" recently interviewed Bob and Jayne Holmes who moved to Lewes in May 2012 for our Featured Boomer column. The Holmes' relocated from Cape Neddick, Maine after Bob retired. "We lived near York in Maine. It's near the coast same as here, we're seven miles from the beach." Bob met Jayne in Maine and they married in 2002.

Bob was the CFO for an electronics component and printing company, who has worked with comedian Bob Marley and country western star Garth Brooks among others. While Jayne was a staff accountant before the move, she continues to work full time for the same company from their Lewes home in the Ridings.

Gail Alm, Fariway Fairway Independent Mortgage Rehoboth Beach

One of the things I can always count on when talking with someone about real estate and financing it they will always ask me, "What do you think is going to happen with interest rates?" and "What are the current interest rates?"

There are so many factors in today's lending world that affect rates it is just incredible. The economy, government intervention, the stock market... Click Here for The Details

According to Doug Rainey, at Delaware Business Daily," In its first ranking of tax climate the consumer newsletter and online publisher put Delaware on top of the list. The state typically finishes higher, due to the lack of a sales tax and low property taxes."

Delaware Ranks #1 in Tax-friendliness

Delaware has been ranked the nation's most tax friendly state by Kiplinger's. The media company Thursday launched a state-by-state Tax Map, giving online users a guide to state tax policies across the U.S. The tax map offers information  on a range of taxes -including income tax, sales tax, gas tax, and "sin" taxes on products such as alcohol and tobacco.

"This confirms what we have known all along. Delaware is the best place to live, work and play, and do it all for less money," said Alan Levin, director of the Delaware Economic Development Office.
