Locals Now!
October/November 2013
|
Greetings!
My favorite time of year at the Beach in Delaware is Autumn. October has the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival and November has the Independent Film Festival. Every year we see many of the same people and always make some new friends. What are your favorite things to do at this time of year?

Bethany Blues Lewes, Delaware
Kathy and I go to Bethany Blues in Lewes often. One of our favorite ways to unwind after a long week is to go out for something to eat where we can listen to some GOOD live music. Although there is good live music all along the coast; from Lewes to Rehoboth, Dewey and beyond, most of it doesn't start till 10:00 PM. I don't know about you but that is just too late for us.
This is the primary reason we frequent Bethany Blues - the music usually starts around 8:30pm. Don't get me wrong, the food is very good but it is the music that is most appealing. You can usually find us there on Friday evenings after a long week. As far as the food goes, I have never had a bad meal there. Ribs, burgers, and beef brisket are all excellent. If you're looking for something a little lighter, try the Salmon entree or have it with a salad. That is what Kathy usually has.
You will surely be satisfied with anything on the menu and you will be amazed at some of the musical talent they book. Two of our favorites are "Nothing but Trouble", featuring our good friend Bruce Benson on drums; say Hi if you see him, and Clarence Spady (pictured above), one of the best Blues guitarists we have ever heard. Don't forget to look for us; if either of these bands are playing we will likely be there.

Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse
Long since decommissioned as a working navigation aid, the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse serves as a historical marker and reminder of the natural forces that continually reshape the seabed around Cape Henlopen; shoaling around the Cape diminished the light's usefulness, and it was supplanted by the Harbor of Refuge light further out in Delaware Bay. From East End light's observation deck, Cape May is visible some 35 miles away on a clear day, like the stunningly beautiful one when this photo was taken.Click on the photo to see the Full Size photo.

You might not enjoy sitting down to do year-end investment planning, but at least this fall you can make plans with greater certainty. For the last three years, investment planning has meant trying to anticipate possible changes in tax law; for tax year 2013 and beyond, you know for sure how income, capital gains, and qualifying dividends will be taxed. That gives you an opportunity to fine-tune your long-term planning, or to develop a plan if you've postponed doing so. Here are some factors to keep in mind as the year winds down.

Patriot Challenge for Deployed Delawareans
Fairway Mortgage Corporation is spearheading a fundraiser, The Patriot Challenge, aimed at providing a care package for over 500 Delawarean troops currently deployed overseas. Each serviceperson will receive a box that contains everyday necessities such as toothbrushes, razors, socks, and sunscreen as well as some reminders of home, including magazines, small games, and hard candy.
 | Gail Alm |
"Our initial goal was to provide a few care packages to the troops overseas who have some connection to Fairway Mortgage, either clients, friends, or family members," says Gail Alm from Fairway Mortgage. "However, a colleague asked us if we would like the names of 500 Delawareans deployed and we decided to try and put together care packages for all of them."
Donations can be dropped off at Fairway Independent Mortgage Rehoboth Beach, Active Adults Realty in Lewes or Camp Rehoboth.
The company is also asking for volunteers to help assemble packages on Saturday, October 5th from 10am-1pm at the Rehoboth Beach Fire House at 219 Rehoboth Ave.
