Greetings!
May flowers and pollen have arrived after a very wet and chilly Spring in Coastal Delaware. Trust me, it is not usually so chilly by this time of year. The calendar is packed with things to do all up and down the Coast. Did you make it to the British Motorcar Show in Lewes on the 4th? Are you ready for the Farmers' Markets opening this month? Did you get down to Ocean City for Springfest? In this issue, you'll hear about another one of Bill's favorite restaurants - Striper Bites. Phil Martin's photo feature focuses on Kenny's Garage. I'm getting ready for Yoga in the Park and kayaking in the Bay. It's time to take it outside!

Writing Contest Seeks Beach Reads
For Immediate Release
Cat & Mouse Press is a small publishing company based in Lewes, DE. They have announced a new contest inviting writers to submit short pieces of fiction or nonfiction that are "entertaining, interesting, humorous, or just plain fun, according to Nancy Sakaduski. The theme is "The Beach House" and each story must incorporate that theme and also have a strong connection to Rehoboth Beach (Writers do not have to live in Rehoboth however). One of the most popular activities for residents and visitors is reading on the beach, and this contest seeks to collect the kinds of short, engaging stories that help readers relax, escape, and enjoy their time at Rehoboth Beach. First prize is $500 thanks to the sponsor Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach.
I wish I had the time to try my hand at this but we are so very busy this time of year. If any of you do decide to enter, please let me know. I would love to publish your story on our blog and in this newsletter after the contest! More Information

Restaurant Review by Bill Bell
Striper Bites Lewes, DE
Another popular Lewes gathering spot, Striper Bites is one of our favorite places. Even before we moved into Lewes, we always went there on a regular basis. It's a comfortable, no pretense, neighborhood restaurant with great seafood. We often run into people we know, and occasionally meet potential clients.
The menu has something for everyone. They always have at least one rockfish (Striped Bass, Striper) entree. Their Ceasar salad is fantastic. Maybe not as traditional as some, but I love it and get one every visit. They also have a New England Lobster Roll that I'm told it is very authentic. I have never been to New England myself, but I know a good Lobster Roll. I have never had a bad meal there. On Friday nights weather permitting, they have a Happy Hour Raw Bar set up on the patio.
Off-season it remains a very popular place and although I don't think it was part of the original business plan, they have become known for their "Burger Night" which is Monday night half price burgers. The special runs from late September til sometime in May. If you like a good burger, we'll see you there some Monday night. You had better hurry; there aren't many Burger Nights left. Since you're a Local NOW, you don't have to rush; we'll see you one Monday night in the fall.

Photo Feature by Phil Martin
 | Memories of The Pit. |
Aside from being a great mechanic, Kenneth Hughes is a collector of 50's memorabilia and hot rods. The pink counter stools and lunch counter behind the car hop were rescued from a restaurant that once stood on the now-vacant lot across the street from the Milton Library, where the weekly farmers' market is held. The restaurant was known as The Pit, and took its name from the lube pit of the service station that preceded the restaurant. The pit was boarded over, of course, when the restaurant began business.
The gas pump visible in the hot rod photo was manufactured in Salisbury, MD by the Martin & Schwartz Company, in the early 1950's. There is a thriving collectors' market for these and other vintage gas pumps, according to what I see on line. Kenny in fact has another Martin & Schwartz gas pump, not visible in the photos, and is now in the process of acquiring a third.

This popular program is held every Sunday at 8 am, begins May 12th and runs through September 1st. All you need to bring is your mat or towel. And an exciting new exercise series is being introduced for the 2013 season! Zumba by Kelly will be held every Wednesday at 6 pm, starting May 15th through August 28th on the Overlook deck of Canalfront Park. I love Yoga in the Park, the best way to start Sunday. For all the activities and events that take place all year long, visit Lewes Canalfront Park.

 Featured Boomer: Phil Kane
What does Phil remember about his one day at Woodstock? Being surrounded by a sea of people listening to Richie Havens. He says it was awesome and a bit scary at the same time, but he was there. Phil was born in Harlem and brought up in the Bronx. When the Beatles landed in New York surrounded by hordes of screaming teenage girls, Phil picked up the guitar. He began playing at 12 and went on to be a Music Major at Herbert H. Lehman College (Hunter College). His first live performance was at a Reformed School with his classmates where he found his Stage self.
Phil opened for Gallagher
His biggest audience ever? He opened for Gallagher in 1979 to a crowd of 1500 at the Rochester Institute of Technology. How did he discover Delaware? Wesley College in Dover asked Phil back time and again to play the Coffee House during Orientation. He opened the crowd up, made them happy and that made Wesley happy. By age 30, Phil channeled his energy and his people skills into a Sales career in the Corporate world starting with Lever Brothers. When he met Ellen in 1981, they moved to Washington, DC, where Ellen had a tremendous career opportunity with U.S. Customs Service. Eventually Phil also ended up working in the Federal Government in some pretty interesting positions. Let's just say he got pretty good at "identifying the bad guys".
The Rock n Roll Cantor
Phil's Music Career #2 started when he was asked to be the Cantorial Soloist for his synagogue in Loudon County. It was a different stage with no applause but he found it just as rewarding and he put the same energy into his performance. It's all about the people with Phil and he always got the most pleasure when his audience joined in and participated.
So, what will retirement look like for Phil Kane? He and Ellen have only been here in Milton, DE, since late 2012. "Delaware was frustrating at first", said Phil, "it's a slower pace than I am used to." He loves the area however and he is starting to relax. What does Phil miss about the DC Metropolitan Area? "I miss Wegmans, Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Pho." Will we ever have a Vietnamese Restaurant in Coastal Delaware?
Will there be a Music Career #3? A new Sales Career? When I look at this photo, I can't help but think music will play some role in this Chapter in the life of Phil Kane. One gig I know about is our 2013 Client Party. Phil has agreed to be our entertainment and I am so looking forward to hearing his music.
