Naked Hitchhikers: The Private Photography of William A. Rhodes

Wednesday, February 25, 2015, 7pm

ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives

Los Angeles, CA 90007

Admission is free.

William A. Rhoads was an avid photographer of male nudes. He generally sourced his models by picking up hitchhikers on California's Pacific Coast Highway, from around 1970 to 1981. The men were ones he hoped to have sex with, and photography functioned as a convenient alibi for initiating an encounter, and a means of documenting his sexual experiences; moreover, it can be described in equal parts as both an erotic and an aesthetic project.

In this lecture, Dominic Johnson, Senior Lecturer in the School of English and Drama, at Queen Mary University of London, approaches Rhoads' project from the perspective of the "worlds" inside his photographs, and also in terms of the "name," or the taxonomic challenges they pose, in relation to established histories of art and pornography that were being called strikingly into question in the 1970s. Johnson's research springs from Rhoads' private photograph collection held at ONE Archives at the USC Libraries.

As part of the ATLAS IN LA festival, a nine-day festival of film screenings, which will occur March 10-19 at eight venues around Los Angeles, ONE Archives presents a collection of films by Charles Atlas documenting the life of long-term friend and collaborator Leigh Bowery and other friends of the New York and London club scene. Bowery is considered one of the more influential figures in the 1980s and 1990s London and New York City art and fashion circles influencing a generation of artists and designers.

The Legend of Leigh Bowery (2002) is an in-depth and revealing tribute to an outrageous and outlandish artist. Whether he was making headdresses out of toilet seats, or giving birth to a full-grown woman in a nightclub, Bowery defined London's culture of outrage and influenced a generation of artists and designers on both sides of the Atlantic. The screening will also include Mrs Peanut Visits New York (1999), It's a Jackie Thing (1999), What I Did Last Summer (1991).

Trans Hirstory in 99 Objects: Legends and Mythologies

Opening Saturday, March 21, 2015, 6-9pm

ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives
909 West Adams Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90007

Transgender Hirstory in 99 Objects is part of a larger conceptual-art project, the Museum of Transgender Hirstory & Art (MOTHA), organized by artist Chris Vargas. MOTHA proposes to call a cohesive visual history of transgender culture into existence. In doing so, it asks us to think critically about what transgender visual history would look like, how it should be organized, and if it is even possible to compile such a history around an identity category that is relatively new, whose definition is still evolving, and sometimes contested. MOTHA is an imaginary museum. While it is forever "under construction," it takes the form of temporary autonomous events, including performances, exhibitions, panel discussions, public programs, and other occasions that envision the existence of a legitimate and legitimizing arts and history institution dedicated to the cultural work of trans artists, hirstorians, and scholars.

At ONE Archives, MOTHA will present its first iteration of the project Transgender Hirstory in 99 Objects with Legends and Mythologies. More information to be announced soon, including artists and writers! Check back soon to one.usc.edu/MOTHA for more information.

Closing reception in conjunction with the opening of
99 Objects in Transgender Hirstory: Legends and Mythologies on Saturday, March 21, 2015, 6-9-m

Leon Mostovoy's photo-essay on the Market Street Cinema provides an intimate glimpse into the personal lives of sex workers at this San Francisco strip club between 1987 and 1988. Focusing on queer femmes, Mostovoy frames the series within the era's reconsideration of feminist agency through sexuality and sex-positive feminist struggles. During the period, Mostovoy, a transgender artist and photographer, was also producing erotic images for On Our Backs, the first women-run and lesbian-focused erotic magazine, as well as documenting queer punks, activism, and performance in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. The series is among a larger collection of photographs from the 1980s and 90s Mostovoy recently donated to ONE Archives at the USC Libraries.

Since 2012, the archivists at ONE Archives at the USC Libraries have been hard at work on a project to make previously hidden collections available to the public for the first time. Thanks to a two-year project funded in part by a generous grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), we're happy to announce that 225 archival collections-with over 1500 boxes of material-have been organized and cataloged and are now open for research.

The materials in these collections document the lives and work of countless individuals who broke new ground and paved a way for the LGBTQ community.  These personal collections range from the 1940s/50s -including World War II letters between lesbian couple Esther Herbert and Marvyl Doyle, diaries and paintings from gay artist Sidney Bronstein, drawings from ONE Magazine writer and illustrator Joan Corbin, and recorded music from ONE founding member and dancer Tony Reyes-to contemporary trailblazers, such as bisexual activist John Soroczak, gay rapper Deadlee, and pioneering intersex activist Lynn Edward Harris.
