Greetings!
September is here and you know what that means! School is back in session and fall is just around the corner. Here at ONE, the leaves aren't the only things changing. We are excited to announce that ONE has elected a new President of our Board of Directors!
Please join us in welcoming Annie Goto to the team. Annie's many years of service to our community, her extensive experience in non-profit fundraising, and her professional background in sales and business development will prove to be an amazing asset to ONE. She has written an introductory statement that we would like to share with you in the newsletter below.
We are also excited to announce the official selection of films for our upcoming ONE Queer Film Fest on October 13! This year's line-up is diverse, thought-provoking, funny and most of all...queer! We hope to see you at the movies in October!

ONE Archives Welcomes Our New President of the Board of Directors Annie Goto
Being elected President by the highly accomplished Board of Directors of the oldest LGBTQ organization in the United States and the largest repository of LGBTQ materials in the world is an honor and a privilege. Moving into the next couple of years, the Board and I look to our community for continued support as we grow the collections from our LGBTQ family, as well as, present the archival materials to the public through innovative programming, events and gallery exhibitions. In collaboration with the USC Libraries, we are focused on furthering our global outreach and collaborations with international activists, scholars, artists, and allies from such countries as Hungary, China, Poland, and France. On a national scale, we are partnering with LGBTQ organizations in support of their efforts and the services they provide to our community. I ask that you stay connected with us at ONE Archives or get reconnected by taking a tour of our 909 Adams Building, supporting our gallery openings in West Hollywood, attending our Culture Series, and most importantly, becoming a donor. We are doing invaluable work for our LGBTQ community by collecting and preserving LGBTQ history, while ensuring that our important history is made available to scholars, educators, activists and the generations behind us. Join our efforts today, as you are an important part of ONE. To help us preserve our history for generations to come, click HERE. Annie Goto President, Board of Directors ONE Archives

ONE Archives at the USC Libraries Presents
Laszlo Ivanyi: Diary

September 21 - October 13, 2013
ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives
909 West Adams Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90007
Reception with Dean Catherine Quinlan of the USC Libraries:
Saturday, September 21, 2013
Reception at 5:30pm; Program at 6pm
ONE Archives at the USC Libraries is pleased to present a solo exhibition of artwork by Hungarian-born, French artist Laszlo Ivanyi. Laszlo Ivanyi: Diary will include a selection of artworks recently donated to ONE Archives by the artist including a series of mural-sized abstractions and numerous figurative studies. Quotations from Ivanyi's unpublished diary will accompany the artworks, illuminating the work and life of this fascinating artist, musician, and writer. This exhibition marks Ivanyi's first showing in the United States.
Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1934, Ivanyi immigrated to France in 1956 to study at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts. A prodigious pianist since childhood, Ivanyi earned a living in his new country as a piano teacher, becoming well acquainted with important figures in French society such as the Rothschilds, and continued to paint privately throughout his life. His early work in the 1960s and 1970s focused on producing expansive, lyrical abstract paintings on paper. Beginning in the 1980s the artist began to experiment with figurative studies using color pallets reminiscent of photonegative processes on mylar.
On September 21, Dean Catherine Quinlan of the USC Libraries will hold a reception welcoming Laszlo Ivanyi and Gregoire Bertier into the USC Trojan Legacy Circle. Kindly RSVP to the reception by September 18, 2013 at www.usc.edu/esvp (code: ONE) or call 213-831-1642.
Support for Laszlo Ivanyi: Diary is provided by the USC Libraries and the independent, community partner ONE Archives.

From the Archives: Collections, Collections, Oh My!
Wow, where has summer gone? We just had to say farewell to Mario, one of our fantastic summer interns. He worked on the processing of the Carrier papers and Emler photographs. He will be returning to the University of Washington in Seattle to complete his Master's degree. Our other summer intern, Dani, has also completed her internship, but will continue as a volunteer - thank you, thank you!
Classes have already started at USC and the students living on the LGBT friendly Rainbow Floor have already visited for a tour. Our upcoming fall interns have also stopped by to plan their time at ONE; Linda is a student in the Gender Studies program at USC and Clarice is a student in the MLIS program at UCLA.

Steve Desroches Collection
The growth of the collections appeared to have been un-phased by the summer heat; over 200 linear feet of new materials arrived during the summer including slides from The Advocate, new records from Beth Chayim Chadashim (BCC), and costumes from Robert Legoretta / Cyclona and Steve Desroches.
The Desroches dresses and headpieces were custom made by a company in Thailand that specializes in costumes for ballroom dancers, ice skaters, and drag queens - can we say sequins please? Desroches also donated well-documented press photographs, video footage of a small riot, correspondence from Ray Bourbon, the high school yearbook of Anita Bryant, and magazines documenting life in Provincetown, to mention a few items.

Additional materials were added to Philip Gambone's collection of interviews from his books, Travels in a Gay Nation: Portraits of LGBTQ Americans along with materials from his novels, The Language We Use Up Here: And Other Stories and Beijing: A Novel. A new collection documenting the heart-wrenching story of one person's journey from the death of his partner to the start of recovery from a crystal meth addiction has also arrived at ONE. Processing all these collections would not be possible without help from the community, USC, the archival staff, and all of our wonderful volunteers. Arthur, one of ONE's longtime volunteers. Thanks for all the wonderful work you do for ONE!
Speaking of volunteers, ONE has some of the most incredible volunteers around! We cannot say enough about how instrumental they have been in preserving and protecting these incredible collections day in and day out. Many have been lifelong LGBT activists, in one way or another, and we are so honored to have them aboard.
It was not a surprise when one of our volunteers, Ed, recently discovered his picture on the cover of David Eisenbach's book, Gay Power, about the gay rights movement in the 1960's and 70's. This amazing photo was originally printed in Life Magazine, and represents the caliber of volunteers that we are so fortunate to have with us at ONE. History doesn't preserve itself, so please let us know if you are interested in volunteering!

ONE ARCHIVES DONOR OF THE MONTH
CHRISTOPHER HARRITY
ONE Archives would like to thank Christopher Harrity, who is both a donor of ONE and also a new volunteer! Christopher is the Senior Web Producer at The Advocate and recently facilitated the donation of several issues of the magazine as well as some of their important organizational records. During the process of donating the materials, he was so inspired by ONE and the work we do here that he decided to become a volunteer! Soon after he began volunteering, he wrote an op-ed piece about his experience with ONE in The Advocate. You can read the piece HERE. Since the article came out, we have received two more volunteers here at ONE who were inspired by Christopher's story. Thank you Christopher for all your hard work on behalf of ONE!
