News from ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives
|
Greetings!
With the holidays behind us and the new year officially underway, ONE has an exciting lineup of programming, exhibitions and new collections in the works for 2013!
Coming up on February 2, the ONE Archives Gallery & Museum will open Queers Print, an eclectic and inventive exploration into the history of queer printing and activism beginning with ONE Magazine in the 1950s.
We would also like to share the exciting news that once again ONE is the recipient of a generous grant from National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) of the National Archives. The funds from this federal grant will allow us to organize and catalog over 100 collections over the next two years and make them accessible to the public.
From everyone here at ONE, we wish you a wonderful 2013 and hope to see you at the many programs we have coming up at ONE this year!

The exhibition features a range of queer magazines, newspapers, newsletters and zines, varying from foundational homophile publications such as ONE Magazine, groundbreaking gay liberation and lesbian-feminist titles such as The Advocate and The Lesbian Tide, and significant queer people of color publications such as BLK, as well as numerous DIY zines.

Each title included in the show, over forty different publications in total, has been photocopied and bound for visitors to peruse and read, inviting the public to engage with six decades of queer history through the printed page.

NHPRC Grant awarded to ONE

Continuing our success in preserving and making available the legacy of the LGBTQ community, ONE is excited to share some good news in this new year. ONE Archives is proud to announce that we are once again the recipient of a generous grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) of the National Archives. The funds from this federal grant will allow us to organize and catalog over 100 collections over the next two years and make them accessible to the public.
In the coming months, you will hear more about some of the collections that we've been working on recently, including materials from a variety of groundbreaking and influential LGBTQ organizations including Black & White Men Together, LA Shanti Foundation, Municipal Elections Committee of Los Angeles (MECLA), Lambda Literary Foundation, Outfest, Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), California AIDS Ride, Beth Chayim Chadashim, Southern California Women for Understanding, Christopher Street West and many, many more.
Over the next couple of years, we will be very happy to also share with you the many personal stories found in our collections. Materials from dozens of LGBTQ movers and shakers will soon be available to the public, including papers and/or photographs from Carolyn Weathers, Wuzzy Spaulding, Susan McGrievy, Thomas Coleman, Bruce of Los Angeles, John Quitman Lynch, and Patricia Nell Warren. And that's just the beginning.
The staff at ONE looks forward to sharing with you the accomplishments of these numerous organizations and people who have worked tirelessly in advancing equality for the LGBTQ community and its future generations.

LGBTQ History Project Internship
ONE Archives is currently seeking interns to assist with a new history project being developed!
ONE Archives is accepting applications for student interns interested in helping produce a series of LGBTQ history panels to be utilized as educational displays by non-profit organizations, corporations and public schools. The project will involve using the collections at ONE, the largest LGBTQ archive in the world, to research, develop and write content, identify and scan images for the displays, and possibly assist with design issues as needed. NEW AT ONE!
ONE Archives would like to thank Catherine Lord for her donation of drawings and poetry by Joan Corbin. Joan Corbin, pseudonym Eve Elloree, was one of nine founding members of ONE Incorporated when she joined the fledgling organization in July 1953.
She planned, designed, and illustrated ONE Magazine as an editorial staff member from 1953-1954, and then as its art director from 1954-1963. Her beautiful covers and interior designs created an indelible brand for the pioneering magazine, playing a huge part in its success and helping define it as one the most progressive of its era.
