News from ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives
Greetings!

September is a busy month around ONE, as our 60th Anniversary programming is in full swing and we are busy planning several great events that will be coming your way shortly!

On October 6th, ONE presents "Letters to ONE: From Fringe to Forefront", a special evening featuring dramatic readings of heartfelt, poignant, and deeply personal letters written during the McCarthy era to ONE Magazine, the first widely distributed gay publication in the U.S., to benefit ONE Archives.

Also opening on October 6th, ONE presents Meeting in the Margins: 60 Years of Queer Organizations in the Archive an exhibition that spotlights the little known histories of several prominent LGBTQ  organizations in L.A. Also, don't miss our October Culture Series with  Michael Kearns on October 21st. Hope to see you at these exciting programs!

"Letters to ONE: From Fringe to Forefront"
October 6, 2012

A special evening featuring dramatic readings of heartfelt, poignant, and deeply personal letters written to ONE Magazine, the first widely distributed gay publication in the U.S.

Saturday, October 6, 2012, 5-7pm
ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives
909 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles

Performances by Dalila Ali Rajah (Hart of Dixie, Grey's Anatomy), Beth Grant (SAG Award Winner, The Mindy Project), Doug Spearman (Noah's Arc), Hunter Lee Hughes (Winner Takes All), and Paul Jacek (Joan Rivers). Adapted and directed by Zsa Zsa Gershick (Door Prize, Bluebonnet Court). Cast subject to change.

"Letters to ONE: From Fringe to Forefront" will dramatize a collection of letters written to ONE Magazine, of which only a select few were actually published in the 1950s and 60s. These letters, drawn from historian Craig Loftin's new book Letters to ONE, were written from isolated lives all across the U.S. during the McCarthy era. Mostly anonymous, they were from men and women, young and old, seeking a sense of belonging and community.

The event will also include a Q&A with historian Craig Loftin, author of Letters to ONE, moderated by USC Professor and ONE Archives Board Member Chris Freeman; a special ceremony recognizing the ACLU LGBT Project and the Lesbian and Gay Lawyers Association (LGLA) which have chosen to preserve their historical legacies at ONE Archives; and the opening of Meeting in the Margins: 60 Years of Queer Organizations in the Archive, an eclectic, in-depth presentation of materials from ONE spotlighting queer organizations founded in Los Angeles.

ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives presents Meeting in the Margins: 60 Years of Queer Organizations in the Archive, an exhibition spotlighting several foundational LGBTQ organizations in Los Angeles through an extensive range of materials - documents, photographs, publications, video, t-shirts, banners, signs, ephemera and artworks - all from ONE Archives. As part of ONE's 60th Anniversary initiative to spotlight the organizational history of queer L.A., this exhibition is intended to further highlight little known histories for the public.

Some organizations profiled include: ACT-UP/L.A.; Black and White Men Together, Los Angeles (BWMT/LA); the Blue Max Motorcycle Club; Catch One; the Los Angeles Gay Liberation Front (L.A. GLF); the Southern California Women for Understanding; and the Transsexual Action Organization (TAO).

Meeting in the Margins: 60 Years of Queer Organizations in the Archive will be on view at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives beginning October 6, 2012. The opening of this exhibition coincides with the event "Letters to ONE: From Fringe to Forefront."

Meeting in the Margins is organized by David Frantz, Curator at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives. Generous support for exhibitions and programming during ONE's 60th Anniversary is provided by Wells Fargo.

Check out this blog entry by ONE Gender Studies Intern Jacquelyn Lopez:

As a student at the University of Southern California, a place filled with knowledge and resources, I often forget how many resources are offered to us.  I recently discovered one of the university's most valuable assets, the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives.  A place filled with books, newspapers, photos, digital media, and art work covering LGBTQI material from as early as the 1950's. I recently had the chance to look over one of the collections by photographer Andrew J. Epstein (A.J. Epstein).

A.J. Epstein, a photographer and artist from the Los Angeles area, has been documenting people and events in the LGBTQI  community for over 40 years.

As I looked at the very powerful photographs in the collection, I was intrigued by the variety of the photographs; there are so many feelings expressed in the faces of the people, artwork, parades, protests, all capturing queer culture and history. Although all of the photos were striking, two in particular stood out to me....

"We are all lucky to still have Michael Kearns with us," says Sir Ian McKellen, "now recording his private and public story with an honesty and humor that put most other show-biz autobiographies to shame."
