Principal's Message
|
Dear Parents,
Parents, please join us for our first Parent Education Night here at Murwood Tuesday, October 20, from 7-8 PM in the Multipurpose Room.
Our topic is Understanding Conceptual Math. April Cherrington, a professional development educator from Silicon Valley Math Initiative (SVMI) will be here to explain how we are teaching students to think conceptually in math using key strategies and activities that build conceptual understanding, such as Math Talks and tasks that show student thinking. While it is always important to know the algorithm to solve a problem, students are now being asked to show their thinking in multiple ways. This approach helps them to take what they have learned and apply it to new problems. Please join us!
A huge thank you to those community members who came out to Murwood to refresh our Mustang mosaic in the front garden, and for all the hard work inventorying our science kits for future STEM activities.
Special thanks to Mrs. Cerruti and Mrs. Banfield who rolled up their sleeves to help us on a Saturday.
Thank you,
Carol Nenni
Murwood Principal

Mayor Bob Simmons to visit Murwood Walking Club on Wednesday, October 28th
City Mayor Bob Simmons will be coming to visit our students and to show his support for the Murwood Walking Club. Mayor Simmons is well known in our community for hosting his Saturday "Walnut Creek Walks," a walking tour that he had started back as a mayor in 2012. He has led many walks to different areas of our city from downtown to Shell Ridge covering both the natural landscape and historical parts of "the Corners".
Come put on your walking shoes. We invite you to walk with our mayor and our students! We will also have parent sign ups for our Fire Up Your Feet Challenge at the event.
Event Time: From 11:45 am to 12:30 pm on Wednesday, October 28th.

How's everyone's gift wrap selling going? Murwood is currently raising money for our science program and outdoor education through a gift wrap and kitchen item sale. Look for the Charleston Wrap packet and shop, shop, shop! Our school code is 7626. It is quick and easy to sign up your child then, forward the online shopping link to relatives who are out of town. Here is the link: http://www.charlestonwrapfundraising.com/ The sale ends the week of October 21. Thank you for supporting Murwood and our science program.
WALK-A-THON Hey Murwood WALKERS! We are still collecting money from the walkathon event. Did you remember to turn yours in? If not, please do so at your earliest convenience as we need to close the books on this event. Thank you again for your support of the Murwood PTA and the 4th Annual Murwood Welcome Back Walkathon!
WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH AN IDEA? LET YOUR IMAGINATION FLY!!!

THE BOOK FAIR IS NEXT WEEK
Are your kids excited? We're excited. We'll be setting up this Friday afternoon and ready to open on Monday. Come stop by after school everyday from 2-4 PM, or our evening hours Tuesday night from 6:30-8 PM. And we'll be open all day Saturday during the Halloween Carnival. We're still looking for helpers to make sure everything runs smoothly, so please visit our Sign Up Genius and come help for an hour or two.
MURWOOD LOVES TO READ And to prove it, we're going to keep track of our reading hours next week during the Book Fair. Your student will be bringing home tracking sheets today in their Wednesday envelope. Starting Monday, fill out how many minutes they read the night before and we'll add their name to our monster tracker outside the library. Let's see how many minutes Murwood can log in next week.
HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL
Join us Saturday, October 24th from 11:30-3pm for our Annual Murwood Halloween Carnival. This is a free Murwood Community event, with a nominal fee for food/cake walk. There will be loads of fun activities for our students, including: Carnival games, cake walk, face painting, Sips and Sliders food truck, and fabulous prizes for students.
