Principal's Message
Why Daily Reading Matters
We all know how busy after school hours are with sports, music, arts, and homework.  When its crunch time, your child may ask you, 'Can't I skip my daily reading?"  Here are some great reasons to tell your child why their daily 20 minutes of reading is so important:
  • A child who reads twenty minutes daily builds background knowledge and vocabulary.
  • Reading volume really matters.  Here's a look at the benefits of daily reading:

Children who choose what they read will read more, understand more, and stay with reading longer.  It's hard to not pry those Captain Underpants books out of their hands, but if they read them voraciously, that's a good thing.  You can balance that by what you read aloud.

Children who talk about what they read improve their comprehension by thinking about, analyzing, and comparing their ideas with others.  When your child is reading, ask them to stop and share something interesting with you.  Ask questions like, "Why do you think the character did that?" or  "Can you find a line in that book that you wish you wrote?"

What else can you do?  Modeling fluent reading by reading aloud to your child.  Gather all your children and read books that you loved as a child. Choose a book that may be too difficult for your child to read independently as a read aloud, and don't forget to add voices and enthusiasm.

Displaying a love for the written word benefits every child.  Let your child see you read daily.  Keep a book in your bag and have it ready when you are waiting for drop off or pick up.  Keep books stashed in the car for your kids, too, for those doctor visits or time spent in traffic instead of handing over your phone or turning a movie on in the car.

Daily reading matters, so make the time and watch your child develop strong habits and a love of reading.

Thank you,
Carol Nenni
Murwood Principal
From the Office
Fall is slowly starting to make an appearance...which means cool mornings and warm afternoons.  This also means when the children get hot, they shed their jackets & sweaters on the playground.  Please be sure you are marking all outerwear with your child's name so we can do our best to return anything that gets left behind.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH AN IDEA? LET YOUR IMAGINATION FLY!!!
It's time for the National PTA Reflections Arts Program!!  This is a National PTA Program celebrating the Arts with student submissions in 6 categories:visual arts, photography, literature, dance choreography, film production, music composition. This year the theme is:  Let Your Imagination Fly.

Bring the theme to life!  Students can draw, paint, take a photo, write a story, compose music, create a dance, or make a video that captures the theme!  Students' work will have a chance to advance to a District, State and even National level. All entries will be due October 16, 2015. Entry forms and official rules are in the office, or go to www.capta.org for more information.

BOOKFAIR BOOKMARK CONTEST
We're starting something new this year during our upcoming Book Fair - a bookmark contest. Every student will bring home a blank bookmark in their Wednesday envelope for them to unleash their imagination on. Poems, pictures, stickers; if they can imagine it they can put it on the bookmark. The Book Fair theme this year is Monsters, but your bookmark can be anything you want. The class that has the most returned decorated bookmarks during the week of the Book Fair (October 19-23) will win their teacher a gift certificate to use at the Book Fair for their classroom library. Be sure to have your artist turn in their bookmarks with their names and teacher's names written on the back during the week of the Book Fair. All bookmarks will be displayed in the hallway across from the library.

WIMPY KID #10 PRE-ORDERS
Be sure to turn in your pre-order form for the upcoming release of the 10th installment in the Wimpy Kid series, Old School. Books are $9.75 with tax and will be delivered to school free of charge on the release date.

BOOKFAIR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We know Murwood loves to read and we know there are lots of people who like to help our kids find the perfect book at the Book Fair. Please visit our Sign Up Genius to help out at lunch, after school, or during the Carnival. We wouldn't be able to have such a successful Book Fair without our volunteers help!

HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL
Join us Saturday, October 24th from 11:30-3pm for our Annual Murwood Halloween Carnival.  This is a free Murwood Community event, with a nominal fee for food/cake walk.  There will be loads of fun activities for our students, including: Carnival games, cake walk, face painting, Sips and Sliders food truck, and fabulous prizes for students.   Remember to stop by the library for our book fair during the carnival.  The carnival will come to a close with an amazing Magic Show from 2-2:45pm that you don't want to miss!!

October Fundraising Update
Thank you to all of the families that have already donated to WCEF K-12 for this school year. With your help, we've already raised $450,000 toward our $1 million goal!

But we still have a long way to go-so far only 25 percent of our families have donated. If we do not make our $1 million goal, we will not be able to fund the critical programs and services that so enrich our students' education, like a science lab specialist who brings science to life with hands-on activities.
What we fund at Murwood:
  • Science Lab Specialists
  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical education
  • Before- and after-school library hours
  • Professional coaching and mentoring time for teachers
None of these programs would be available to our students without donations from parents like you. Do your part; donate to WCEF K-12 today!
