Principal's Message
Dear Murwood Families,

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and here at Murwood, we strive to make every day count! A love of learning starts early! Build the habit of good attendance - school success goes hand-in-hand with good attendance.

Here are some statistics that support the importance of on time, daily attendance:
  • Research shows that students who attend school every day in the primary grades are far more likely to read proficiently by 3rd grade.
  • For every day of school missed, it takes three days to make up what was taught.
  • By the 6th grade, chronic absence is a leading indicator of whether a student will drop out of high school.
  • In the 9th grade, school attendance is a better indicator than test scores of a student's likelihood to graduate from high school.
  • Californians who do not earn high school diplomas are eight times more likely to be incarcerated than those who do; 75% of California prison inmates and 69% of inmates in county jail are drop outs.
Thank you,
Carol Nenni
Murwood Principal
From the Office
REMINDERS FOR DROP-OFF and PICK-UP:
  • Please be mindful of our friends on Vanderslice Avenue and Kayser Court during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups...we want to be good neighbors and respect driveways, side streets,  and crosswalks.  Please drive as if you and your family live on this street!
  • We ask that you arrive to school between 8:00 AM and 8:15 AM.  Please do not drop students off earlier, as there is no supervision for them.  If you need to drop your children off prior to 8:00am, please make arrangements with Keyspot for before school care.
  • Please pull as far forward as possible to drop-off and pick-up your students, and remain in your car...staff will assist you with getting students in and out of cars.
  • Finally, please note that except for the handicap and auction spaces, most of the spaces in our parking lot are reserved for staff. There are a few spaces available at the front of the circle for short term use, as well as by the gate to the left as you enter the school  When parking, please use the walking paths provided for your safety.
Let's work together to make things move smoothly for all!

Fundraising update-we're off to a great start!
Thank you to all of the families that have already donated to WCEF K-12 for this school year. With your help, we've already raised $400,000 toward our $1 million goal!

But we still have a long way to go-so far only 24 percent of our families have donated. If we do not make our $1 million goal, we will not be able to fund the critical programs and services that so enrich our students' education, like a science lab specialist who brings science to life with hands-on activities.

What we fund at Murwood:
  • Science Lab Specialists
  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical education
  • Before- and after-school library hours
  • Professional coaching and mentoring time for teachers
None of these programs would be available to our students without donations from parents like you. Do your part;  donate to WCEF K-12 today!
The Walnut Run for Education is this Sunday!
It's not too late to register for the Walnut Run for Education 5k or 10K and support WCEF K-12!  Register today and be sure to designate WCEF K-12 as the educational beneficiary!

Introducing the new WCEF K-12 logo!
WCEF K-12 has a new logo! It was created by Britt Brown, a local Walnut Creek graphic designer and Las Lomas parent.

For the past several weeks, our community has been voting on the logo color scheme and the results are in. The winning colors are blue and orange! Purple and green came in second, and red and gray came in third.
Thank you to everyone who voted and a special thank you to Extreme Pizza, Five Little Monkeys and Lottie's Creamery for hosting our ballot boxes! We also want to recognize WCEF Board member and Las Lomas parent Lisa Sun for creating the ballot boxes and working with local businesses to support the logo voting process.
