Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

Please join us on Tuesday, October 21, at 7:00 in the MPR for "Homework without Tears" with Lisa Miller! Our goal is to share topics of interest with our parent community, and our survey results from last year showed that homework help was at the top of the list! Join us to learn how to calm homework time in your house! Free!

As you may know. September was Attendance Awareness Month, but now that September is behind us, we wanted to remind everyone that Every School Day STILL Counts! For every day of missed school, it takes three days to make up what was missed. Attending school on time regularly helps children feel better about school - and themselves, and the earlier these habits start, the more likely they are to continue, which leads to greater success in school and beyond!

We encourage you to make on time school attendance a priority and to talk with your children about the importance of showing up to school everyday, and make that a family expectation. Plus, when children are absent, schools get fewer resources from the state, resulting in less funding to pay for teachers and books.

Please remember that if your child arrives at school after the 8:15 bell, or enters the class after the teacher has brought in their class from the playground, they are considered tardy.

At Murwood minutes matter, so please help us make every moment count.

Thank you,

Carol Nenni

Murwood Principal

From the Office

Reminder for those participating, Reflections projects are due in the office this Thursday, October 16th.

From the PTA President

Dear Murwood Families,

Next week is our annual book fair, which is a great opportunity to pick out some new titles for your home library, and even better, the proceeds from the Book Fair provide funds for our school library.  Tuesday night, the book fair is open at 7 p.m., which not coincidentally is our PTA meeting time.

I'd like to invite everyone to this month's meeting. We will be condensing our usual business to 15 minutes and devoting the rest of the time to a guest speaker to discuss "Homework without Tears".  This program is being provided free of charge to our community by a joint effort between the Murwood Advisory Committee and Murwood PTA. The meeting and presentation will be 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room.

Next Saturday is our Halloween Carnival, which is a great family event.  Our Community Outreach volunteers have been hard at work planning great activities, arranging for vendors, and finding a fantastic performer to entertain all of us.

Have a great week, and we hope to see you at next week's events!

Sincerely,
Mandy Wells
PTA President

REFLECTIONS

Explore the arts!  Encourage your child to participate this this year's PTA Reflections program.  The theme this year is "The world would be a better place if..."  Your child can reflect on the theme, create an original piece of art, and be recognized for their creativeness.  More information and official rules are in the office, or you can go to http://www.capta.org/sections/programs/reflections.cfm. All entries are due by Oct 16. Please contact Stacy Cerruti if you have questions.

WALKING CLUB VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We nee a couple more volunteers for walking club!  We still have openings on Mondays and Tuesdays from 11:40 AM- 12:30 PM and subs for other days.  Please contact Tina Neuhausel if you would like to help.

WIMPY KID #9 IS COMING SOON
For all you Wimpy Kid fans, the next installment of Greg Heffley's adventures is set to release November 4. You can pre-order it now for only 9.75 (including tax) through our Scholastic Book Fair. Forms were sent home a few weeks ago, but if you've misplaced it there are more in the office. Books will be shipped free of charge on the release date to the office to be delivered to your child's classroom.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE ALL MURWOOD READERS
Our book fair, Sir Readalot's Castle, will start next Monday and run through the end of the Fall Festival on Saturday, October 25. We will be open everyday at lunch and again after school from 2-4. We love to see happy readers with new books in their hands. If you'd like to help at at the fair, there are some spots left available. Please sign up here if you can help out.

RACE TO REACH RAPUNZEL READING CONTEST
In honor of our book fair, Sir Readalot's Castle, we thought we would match our reading contest to that theme. This week we will be sending home forms for you to fill out and bring in starting next week to confirm how much time your child spent reading during the week of the book fair. For every 20 minutes spent reading, their name will go on a "brick" to help reach Rapunzel in her tower. So 20 minutes reading = 1 brick, an hour reading = 3 bricks. We're hoping to reach Rapunzel's window at the top. The tower will be in front of the library during the book fair for you to keep track of our progress.
