Why Lamb? Facts Your Shoppers May Not Know
Notes from the Dietitian-Heidi Diller, RDN
February also marks American Heart Month. So don't leave your customers wondering if lamb can be part of their diet. Tell them! I personally love lamb and I frequently serve it for dinner. On average, a 3-ounce serving of lamb is lean, has only 175 calories and meets the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) definition for lean. Lean cuts include those from the leg, loin, and rack. It's also nutrient rich, making it a natural fit for healthy diets.
You also might be surprised to know that a 3-oz. serving of lamb provides nearly five times the amount of the essential omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), compared to a 3-oz. serving of beef. It's also an excellent source of protein, vitamin B12, niacin, zinc and selenium and a good source of iron and riboflavin.
