HELP VICTIMS OF EQUADOR'S EARTHQUAKE
Irene Macias is a Central Region CLC member who hails from Equador. She would like CLC Canada members to know about an initiative she was involved with when living in Equador.

The initiative is
Hogar de Cristo. It is part of a Jesuit network that was founded by Saint Alberto Hurtado, a Jesuit in Chile. This non-profit organization has been in Ecuador for 45 years, helping people who are in extreme poverty, vulnerable, and excluded.

On April 16, 2016, Equador experienced a devastating earthquake.
Hogar de Cristo is helping with this cause. Any dollar collected is used to pay the cost of houses, and with volunteers' help, the organization builds the houses for free to those has lost everything.

As a CLC Ecuador member, Irene was a  volunteer with Hogar de Cristo for several years. She has built houses with other CLC Members and university students.

Scripture For Reflection:
Lk 10:25-29

One day an authority on the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to receive eternal life?....What is written in the Law?" Jesus replied. "How do you understand it?" He answered, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your strength and with all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' " "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do that, and you will live."

NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear CLC Sisters and Brothers,

As we continue our Easter Season journey, isn't it delightful that the evening stars are taking longer to appear and the pussy willows along the country roads are heralding the greening of the countryside? My inclination is to be outdoors digging in the soil but there is indoor work needing to be done so I am at the computer.

With the Update publishing only every quarter, there seems to be such a long space of time in-between with considerable General Council activity. I will take this opportunity to share some of the highlights of a few of these activities with you.

Mercy Retreats

Recently, two CLC regions held retreats with themes of Mercy, for the Jubilee of Mercy. Read below to get an overview of these retreats and resources on this theme.

CENTRAL REGION:
Central Region held a retreat in February called 'Growing More Prayerfully In This Year of Mercy - A Day of Reflection and Celebration'. We were blessed to have Father Trevor Scott, SJ as the retreat leader. Father Trevor used art pieces and other visuals that captured our attention and helped us to explore this theme in a unique way.

Haiti: an update five years later  (Easter 2016)

The favela 'La Cie'naga'in Haiti

The favela 'La Cie'naga' in Haiti
...To visit Hispaniola is an insightful experience. Despite the devastation, Haiti is rebuilding--life is returning to normal. I experienced that when my Haitian bus from Santo Domingo arrived 30 minutes early! The new Haiti. The Beatitudes are not just religious thoughts--they describe the reality of the Haitian street kids of Dajabon, and the Haitian slum children of La Cienaga--WE are their sisters and brothers.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they shall be filled." Mt 5:6

A SYRIAN CLC FAMILY SEEKING A NEW HOME

Syria's civil war is the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. Half the country's pre-war population, more than 11 million people, have been killed or forced to flee their homes.

Families are struggling to survive inside Syria, or making a new home in neighboring countries. Others are risking their lives on the way to Europe, hoping to find acceptance and opportunity.

In December, I was informed by a CLC friend in Lebanon, Rita El Rami, that a CLC Syrian family were refugees in Lebanon. They had expressed a desire to come to Canada and Rita asked if we could help.

REGIONAL PORTRAITS
The following 'portraits' are to provide you with an overview of two CLC regions. These overviews discuss topics such as formation and missions. They provide us with insights into how our CLC members in other regions are doing and show us what resources, prayer life, and actions our regions have been employing that have allowed for continuous growth and renewal.

THE ECOLOGY FRONTIER

FORESTS
... In an article entitled "Forest Refuge", John McCarthy, a Canadian Jesuit priest and ecologist,
states, "We are currently living in probably the greatest period of human-caused deforestation on the planet". Reflecting on this, we find that protecting and managing our forests are key actions in adapting to and mitigating climate change...
Reforestation is one of the easiest and most necessary ways to combat climate change. However, reforestation takes time, as new growth is slow and the damage has been done.

Click Here to read the full article, prepared by Ann McRae McIsaac and Helen McQuaid. It is accompanied by a contemplation on the sacredness of forests.
