From fairytales to Hollywood blockbusters, "the rule of three" (Latin-"omne trium perfectum") principle suggests things that come in threes are inherently more humorous, satisfying and effective than any other number of things.

With the close of every school year there is always so much to celebrate, recognize and reward. From academic achievements and accomplishments to just being another year older and wiser students and staff alike fondly recall the "highlights" of the school year. But for those of us in the Lebanon Community Schools family, the celebration and recognition did not stop with the end of the school year. I am pleased to share the Lebanon Lady Tigers softball team attained the highest achievement possible by winning the Indiana High School Athletic Association's Class 3A State Championship. We are so proud of the hard work and effort this amazing group of young ladies put into this championship season. With a final record 27 wins and 1 lose the Tigers were impressive all season long. This championship was a team effort from start to finish. Congratulations to the Lady Tigers State Champions.

In addition to winning the state championship, I am also very proud of a couple of very significant individual recognitions. At the conclusion of the championship game the IHSAA recognizes the one senior athlete who is the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award for the 2015-2016 season. This year's winner is LHS senior right fielder Ms. Laura Patterson. This recognition is well deserved based on Laura's outstanding contributions to her team, her school, and the sport of women's softball. Congratulations to Laura!

To finalize the "rule of three" principle, late last week I received notification that Softball Coach Shane Britt was recently named the State of Indiana Softball Coach of the Year. Coach Britt is a 1990 graduate of Lebanon High School. He is in his second year as Head Coach of the Lebanon Tigers Softball team. During his two years as head coach, Coach Britt has compiled a Sagamore Conference Record of 28-0 and an Overall Record of 48-5. Lebanon Athletic Director Phil Levine says, "Coach Britt has worked extremely hard to get our girls to play and reach their full potential. He is extremely dedicated, committed and invested not only in our softball program but all Lebanon sports programs and the entire Lebanon Community. Congratulations to Coach Britt.

And then as if the "rule of three" was not enough reason to celebrate the achievements of staff and students at Lebanon Community Schools, we are changing that saying to the "rule of four".

I want to congratulate Ms. Jessica Mars, LHS FFA member and 2016 graduate, who has been elected the Indiana State FFA President. Jessica, was officially installed at the 2016-2017 Indiana FFA State President at the 87th Indiana FFA State Convention at Purdue University. Jessica is Lebanon's first State FFA Officer. Jessica is an excellent example of what the FFA jacket stands for and we are thrilled she will have the opportunity to share her passion for FFA and the agriculture industry with those around her.

The Indiana FFA State Officers team consists of seven high school graduates who have elected to defer their education for one year to serve Indiana FFA as youth ambassadors. During their year of service, which begins and ends at the annual State Convention, these officers will travel the state presenting 10 three-day leadership conferences and speaking to over 8,000 FFA members, supporters and individuals involved in leadership and agriculture. Congratulations Jessica!

Congratulations to all of the students and staff that make a difference at LCSC.

Have a wonderful summer and I am looking forward to starting all over next year in recognizing and celebrating all of the great accomplishments of Lebanon students and staff.

Sincerely,

Awarded Grant

Lebanon Community School Corporation along with the City of Lebanon, Boone County Economic Development Corporation, Vincennes University Gene Haas Training Center, and Hendrickson Trailer have been awarded the Education-Workforce Partnership Planning Grant from The Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL). This grant will make possible the creation of coursework designed to expose youth to manufacturing careers and technical skills while providing the education to fill the current and future demand for skilled, trained workers.

Boone County has readily available opportunities for business expansion and development; however, a 2016 study conducted on behalf of the Boone County Economic Development Corporation revealed a lack of available and skilled workforce. The partnership is committed to training more skilled workers with technical skills and to maximize the opportunities for identifying and facilitating internship opportunities. The team of local community leaders, education professionals, and local business leaders will conduct research and facilitate creation of a career pathway for LCSC students to help Boone County prepare to meet the needs of existing and future employers.

The team has been collaborating on this effort since March and is honored to be one of five applicants selected. "The EWIN grant provides us the opportunity to study best practices and implement a cohesive education and workforce model," said Molly Whitehead, Executive Director of the Boone County Economic Development Corporation. "Workforce-related questions are often the first we receive from prospective and existing companies, so I believe this planning grant and the subsequent activity will help Boone County become more competitive economically." The final implementation plan will be complete in December 2016.

3rd Grade Reading Fair

Students chose a chapter book to read to complete a "reading fair" project. The goal of the fair is to enhance and encourage reading at all grade levels and to allow students to collaborate with their peers in their classroom as well as students from the other third grade class. Ultimately, as a result of reading fair, students experienced a deeper enjoyment from reading. Students had to explain the main idea, the problem and solution, as well as characteristics of the characters. In addition to the author, favorite part of the book, recommendations, and synopsis of each chapter in the book.

Voting

While choosing end of the year Superlative Awards, Ms. Gilstrap's class took the opportunity to learn about the election and voting process. The students learned about the open floor nomination process and took great pride in nominating (and seconding those nominations) their peers. As they explored the different civic duties that they are responsible for as good citizens, each student who wanted to take part in the election registered to vote. The following day, polls opened and each student took their registration card to their polling place to submit their ballot.

Each student voted electronically with an ID tag that allowed them to cast one secure vote for their favorite choices. Results of our class election will be revealed during our 5th grade celebration, when superlatives are awarded.
