Celebrating a Job That Lasts a Lifetime

While some of us have jobs we enjoy and cherish, some of us have jobs that are just a means to an end, some of us have jobs that are temporary and forgettable, and then there are a few of us that have jobs that will last a lifetime and beyond. Those in the last description would be teachers.
If you would indulge me for just a moment, close your eyes and think about the five people in your life that have had such an impact on you that by just knowing them at some point in your past they have helped define who you are today. In essence the five people who influenced who you are, are your personal board of directors. For those of you that didn't fall asleep, thank you for playing along. If I were to ask each of you to name the five individuals you just reflected on I would imagine you may have included as a member of your top five; a parent or grandparent, possibly a spouse or significant other, maybe even a sponsor of a youth activity like sports, scouts, or 4-H. But I can almost guarantee that there was a former teacher among your influential five. Most likely it was an elementary teacher, or a teacher that so inspired you that you choose a career path as a result of their influence. In some cases it might even be a coach or music director. What they all had in common was they were "teachers". Teachers who have made a difference. For years I have told every new teacher that has started teaching at Lebanon Community Schools they have control over one of the most powerful and significant responsibilities that anyone can possess....the ability to change a child's life. They will at some point, influence a child in their classroom in such a manner they will forever be a part of that young person's life. The challenge for every teacher is, will they be a positive influence or a negative memory. It is an awesome responsibility, and one I try to impress on each teacher is a blessing not a burden. Fortunately, my experience has been there are far more positive influences than there are negative. Recently we celebrated the retirement of twenty Lebanon educators. From the elementary classroom to the high school choral room, to the central administration office and all classrooms in between, twenty of Lebanon Community Schools finest are ending a career. Those twenty staff members represent over 480 years of experience. 480 years of making a difference. Twenty dedicated educators, that even though they will no longer be in the classroom, they will continue to influence the lives of those they have taught. I would like to recognize those that are retiring from a job that will last forever.

Central
5th Grade Trip to Chicago
Central 5th graders traveled to Chicago on Friday, May 13. 64 students and over 30 chaperones made the two and half hour bus trip up to the Windy City. While there, students explored Shedd Aquarium, ate lunch on Navy Pier, became scientist at the Museum of Science and Industry and traveled 103 floors to the top of Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower.) We "dared to be brave" and walked out on the Skydeck. It was a fantastic trip and all were tired on the ride home.
Field Day Central had another successful Field Day, thanks to Mrs. Peg Rabb, Central staff and parent volunteers. Our 5th grade leaders did a wonderful job of leading their teams through the different stations. Students used lots of cooperation and collaboration skills to work together to complete the different tasks. There may have been some water and mud involved as well!

Harney
Harney Elementary 5th grade students celebrated their graduation from the D.A.R.E. program May 6, 2016. Each fifth grade student was asked to write an essay about what D.A.R.E means to them. Congratulations to all the students who wrote an essay, specifically to Ella Johnson, Addison Lollar, and Mackenzie Summers for being chosen for the three top essays of the Harney fifth grade class. Special thanks to Major Brad Bailey for his dedication to our Harney students.
Saying Good-Bye
This year Harney Elementary is saying good-bye to six of our wonderful teachers. They will be retiring from teaching to move on to new and exciting adventures.
Gail Suscha has been teaching for 40 years. She has been a Harney Cardinal for 38 of her teaching years.
Pat Wiersma has been teaching for 38 years. All 38 years have been at Harney.
Eileen Potenza has been teaching for 35 years. She has worked for 34 of her teaching years for LCSC the last 10 at Harney.
Bev Cunningham has been a teacher for 32 years. 29 of her teaching years for LCSC and 24 years as a Harney Cardinal.
Pam Burpo has been teaching for 31 years. 28 of those years with LCSC and 26 with Harney.
Teresa Kendall has been teaching art for 24 years. 15 of her teaching years have been with LCSC and 13 with Harney.
Collectively that is 200 years of dedication and experience. We will miss them all tremendously. We are also looking forward to the new staff that we will be welcoming for the next school year.
Screen Free Week
During the week of May 2-May 8, Harney participate in Screen-Free Week 2016. This is a nationwide event sponsored by Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. During Screen-Free Week, millions of children and adults pledge to spend seven days screen-free. Instead of watching TV or playing video games, they tend to read, play, think, create, get physically active, and spend more time with friends and family.
Studies show that children who watch less TV are more likely to read well and to be physically fit. Turning off screens also allows for more family time. Each week, American children spend more time in front of a screen than they do in school! Screen-Free Week is a great way to jump-start our kids into more reading, learning, and active play. It's also a lot of fun!
Many parents and other family members chose to join their children in giving up screen-based entertainment all week long and spend time in other fun activities. In all, we had 89 students successfully complete the week and can boast that they went "screen-free"!

The Tiger ROARS 2023
5th grade classes visit Lebanon Middle School
The Tiger ROARS 2023 provided the current 5th grade LCSC students with an opportunity to visit on May 16, 2016 and become familiar with Lebanon Middle School and the opportunities available once they are 6th graders. When they first arrived, the Pep band played while Honor Society/FFA members greeted them in the auxiliary gym at tables that were divided up by last names. At the table, students received color and number coded nametags and a ticket for door prizes. After all students had arrived, the LMS administration and guidance department briefly introduced them to LMS and the opening session concluded with a performance by the LMS Pep band, led by Mrs. Springer.
The 5th graders were then divided into three groups for the rotation between the Activity Fair in the media center, building tours, and a guidance/administration discussion in the gym. The current LMS students representing clubs and athletics in the activity fair created table displays to promote the opportunities available within their organization. An 8th grade student introduced the 5th graders to the activity fair and the activity representatives each introduced their respective activity. At the conclusion of the session in the media center, the 8th grade student provided time for questions and answers. Honor Society/FFA members stood with number signs, split their group up by the number on the students' name tag (1-10) and started at various places around the middle school to give the students a building tour. While in the gym, administration and guidance discussed procedures and expectations while at LMS to set the stage for success. Tables were also on display to highlight each exploratory class available to 6th grade students. Each group had the opportunity to rotate through each station.
The 5th graders all regrouped in the gym for closing remarks, received goodie bags containing LMS gear, and then traveled to the cafeteria for their first lunch at LMS. The bags included - Class of 2023 silicone bracelets, folders, informational sheets on LMS opportunities, a school map, a listing of athletic staff and 6th grade faculty, and a paw print pencil. Students were then treated to a performance by the Vivo Choir, led by Mrs. Willman. After the performance, the 5th graders received instruction regarding lunch procedures, ate lunch and completed the day with the door prize drawing. 50 students received either a LMS t-shirt or sucker donated by the LMS FFA and LMS Athletic Department. Funds provided through the LEF grant covered the cost of nearly everything used for the event.
Tiger Tales
Tiger Tales, Lebanon Middle School's Art and Literature Review, has been published! Over 90 LMS students have their work showcased in the review. This year's Tiger Tales features a variety of student poetry, narrative essays, book reviews, and character reflections. Each page of the review is filled with vibrant artwork. Congratulations to those students featured in the review! Lebanon staff, parents, and students, please be sure to check out a copy of this publication on the LMS website:

FFA Plant Sale
Niyeli Cantu
This year at FFA's annual plant sale they had many different types of flowers, vegetables, and mulch was available for purchase. Miss Crook's horticulture class grew all plants available and the mulch was from a local business, Lamb Farms! Many FFA members volunteered to help work the plant sale all three days the plant sale was open. Members of our community, including teachers from all LCSC schools came by to support Lebanon FFA and purchased mulch and plants! It's safe to say that it was a success and this is an annual tradition we look forward to continuing!
FFA Banquet Niyeli Cantu This year Lebanon FFA members have branched out and competed in many different CDE's. At this year's banquet we had over 100 members present and many guests also attended. Our special guest was Indiana's 2015-2016 FFA State President, Kenzie Kretzmeier! Many members were recognized for various achievements they've accomplished throughout the 2015-2016 school year. Members are becoming more and more involved. Eighth graders, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are all involved in multiple activities. Multiple Lebanon FFA members were recognized for upcoming competition at State Convention in June and we wish them the best of luck!
Floriculture Team Niyeli Cantu
For the first time ever, Lebanon High School has a Floriculture team. Floriculture means to farm flowers. Our floriculture team mainly focuses on classifying different types of flowers. Lebanon's team (Hunter Harsin, Jakob Harsin, Kristin Johns and Jacob Tribby) met every Monday for two hours working hard and building their knowledge of flowers. On April 23, the floriculture team competed at State and got second place overall! They competed in a total of eight competitions (Team Activity, Propagation, Plant ID, Floral Arrangement, Advertisement, Job Interview, and a written test.) Congratulations to the 2015-2016 Floriculture team and the best of luck for next year!
