Hattie B. Stokes
"What feels like the end is often the beginning."
~George Bernard Shaw

Dr. Taylor
The month of May in Indiana generally signals the first true days of spring. I have a real appreciation for the beginning of spring. I love the smell of freshly mown grass, the fragrance of newly budding flowers fill the air, the sounds of the birds early in the morning, and the hints of the warm summer to come. It is indeed a time of fresh and new beginnings.

When it comes to school many times we see the arrival of spring as the beginning of the end of another year in school. The school year is just a few weeks from coming to a close and we seem to celebrate so many end-of-the-school-year activities. The Jr. and Sr. prom, the post prom, receiving yearbooks, taking final exams, field day activities, scheduling classes for next year, starting to worry about what everyone is going to wear on the first day of next school year, and of course the time honored graduation ceremonies. There are so many "end of the year" activities that signal the completion of another school year it is an exciting time for students and families.

I would encourage each parent, grandparent, family member, and teacher to reflect, with pride, upon the many accomplishments our students achieved this year. Each student should be recognized for their achievements this school year. From something as life changing as learning to read, to polishing up those skills that each student will need to be successful in their post high school experience, the end of a school year is a great time to say "congratulations on a job well done!" But as we close out yet another school year I would hope we each convey to our children the end of a school year is the start of a new beginning, a new chapter, and a new opportunity to grow. At Lebanon Community Schools we believe learning is a never ending process. Each of the 13 school years, is truly 13 opportunities to help create a new beginning for your child. The end of each school year truly signals the beginning of the next opportunity for us to help them continue to improve. So as the end of the 2015-2016 school year comes to a close, help us to remind each child that "Every story has an ending but in life every ending is a new beginning." ~ Unknown.

Thank you for helping us make Lebanon Community Schools a great place for families and children.

Sincerely,

Superintendent of Schools

The Lebanon Athletic Department will be teaming up with Methodist Sports to offer Sports Physicals May 18th from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 pm at Lebanon High School. The cost of the physical is $25.00, and $5.00 from every physical administered will go back to the Lebanon Athletic Department to help meet the needs of student athletes. This physical will be completed on the appropriate IHSAA form and will be good for the 2016-2017 school year.

Please note: The physicals for the 2016-2017 school year have changed. The IHSAA now states that "the physician signature must be hand written. No signature stamps will be accepted." A license number must also be printed next to the signature in order to be accepted. Therefore, athletes cannot go to Minute Clinic, Med Checks, CVS, Walgreens, etc... where a nurse practitioner (NP) signs or stamps the physician's signature. The physicals conducted at the high school will be done in accordance to this new guideline.  No preregistration is necessary. Please mark your calendars and save the date May 18th

Central

Developing Student Leaders
through Extra Curricular Activities

Representatives from Central's Student Council presented at the April 19th School Board meeting. Central students gave summaries of the community project work and school projects they have completed this school year. Central Elementary School's vision is "developing and inspiring student leaders to aim high, reach high" our student council leadership is one way we support that vision. Along with student council, Central has added several clubs and academic teams to enhance our extra-curricular activities for students. This year, led by Haley Werner and Jessica Frederick, Central took a Spell Bowl team to competition. We also took a Math Bowl team, led by Chaleen Crose-Faulkner and Jessica Frederick. Mrs. Crose-Faulkner also taught a Hands-on-Algebra to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders after school this past winter. This spring, Mrs. Kim Lahrman, started a spring Running Club.

Student Council has been involved in several events this year to help our community and support our school. Mrs. Kim Lahrman and Mrs. Diana Fields supervised our council this school year.

Candy Grams: Leila Richards
Student Council sold candy grams for Valentine's Day. We set up our store on the stage and sold the grams during lunch for 50 cents each. We all really enjoy helping out and working as a team. We had to give up a little bit of lunchtime or class time, but we use our time wisely so these activities don't affect our studies. It was fun to raise money for Central in a way that let kids spread cheer to their friends.

Toy Drive: Carley Adams
In December, before Christmas, we collected new and gently used toys for the Boone County Toy Drive. We wanted to make sure that all students in Boone County had presents to open on Christmas morning. We set up and decorated a Christmas tree near the front office for students and staff members to place their donated toys. This was very successful, because we collected a lot of toys. Student council members loaded up their arms and walked all the toys we collected to Myrtle Bailey's house. They were very grateful for our donations and their smiles let us know that we were making a difference in our community.

Red Ribbon Week: Emma Bailey
Red Ribbon Week is a time to focus on being Drug Free. We had a great time as we worked together to make creative posters encouraging students to stay drug free. Another reminder we used was a red wristband that said DRUG FREE. Our student council team also wanted to bring attention to staying drug free on a daily basis. Each day had a fun slogan, such as "Drugs don't look good on you!" and the school wore mismatched clothes. It was fun to watch the school team up together against drugs.

Food Drives: Jacob Susong
Student Council organized two food collections for local charities this year. In the fall, we collected items for the Caring Center. At the time, they were in need of all food types so we collected all varieties of food. This helped them during the Thanksgiving season. The class with the most food items collected earned an extra recess. This was a big motivator and we collected two truckloads of food. We heard that Love Inc. may also need help, so we contacted them this spring. They were in need of protein items so we organized one drive just focused protein items. This was also competitive. Love Inc. used these to stock two of their pantries at local churches.

Reuse Heart and Sole Shoe Drive: Sophia Neihart
During the winter we participated in the Reuse Heart and Sole Shoe Collection. We collected many pairs of gently used shoes for people in need. The Boone County Solid Waste Management District picked up the shoes. The goal of this program was to provide the shoes to a new pair of feet in Central Indiana. We thought it was a great way to reduce the amount of trash in our landfill. Plus, we learned that it takes old shoes more than 200 years to decompose. It felt really good to know we were helping out others and our environment.
Harney

Girls on the Run at Harney Elementary

Girls on the Run is a new program that Harney Elementary is proud to offer. This program is designed for every girl to find her inner strength. The girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate the things that make them who they are inside. The program not only promotes positive emotional, social, mental development and has physical activity built into their curriculum. At the end of this season, the Harney Girls on the Run team will finish with a non competitive 5K event.

Third Grade

Third grade has been learning about local, state, and federal government. We had two guest speakers talk to us about the responsibilities of the government and responsibilities of and how to be good citizens. Pictured are Lebanon Fire Chief Chuck Batts and LPD officer James Koontz.

Girls on the Run

At Girls on the Run we have been discussing the meaning of true beauty. Here you will see the girls posing attributes that make us beautiful: Intelligence, Humor, Confidence, Compassion, Acceptance, and Kindness. We are redefining what beauty is, it isn't what you look like or the clothes you wear. True beauty is found in our hearts and it isn't skin deep.

Fifth Grade Field Trip to IUPU
HBS 5th graders had the privilege of attending college for the day, on March 30th. They were welcomed by a team of student Ambassadors and then participated in an afternoon full of activities targeted at motivating them towards college and educational goals. They attended a seminar where they discovered what careers would best suit their personality, listened to a motivational talk from the Liberal Arts department, took a walking tour of the campus, and even ate in the dining hall. Based on the feedback from our students, we may have a few future IUPUI Jaguars on our hands.

LEF Helps Mrs. Schoeff - Music Department

Due to the generous grant provided by The Lebanon Educational Foundation (LEF), there will be a new addition to the music classroom at Hattie B. Stokes. Fifteen new tubano drums have been ordered and received to enhance music instruction. The drums will be used for a drumming club 1st semester of the 2016-17 school year for 3rd-5th grade students. In addition, the drums will be used in regular music instruction for all grade levels. The new drums will provide wonderful musical experiences for our students. Thank you, LEF!

Family Fun Night - Silly Safari

We had over 303 parents and students attend last night and with all the sports and end of the year stuff going on that is just amazing! Thank you for helping and taking time to build the connections with our families!
Congratulations to Mr. Hoffman's class!! They had 40% of their students attend last night and won the class popcorn party!

Kindergarten News

Kindergarten has been working very hard on using vowels in our writing! To practice this skill, kindergarten students got on their surgical gear and put words that were missing their vowels back together. The "doctors" had a great morning and luckily their surgeries were a success.

In social studies, kindergarten students have been learning all about helpers in our communities and each classroom had a career day to wrap up the community helper unit. Students dressed as what they would like to be when they grow up. The following visitors came and talked to the students about their jobs: A baker from Titus Bakery, the owner of Dairy Queen, a chocolatier from Donaldson's Chocolate, a firefighter, police officer, and sheriff. Students ended the day with a taste of ice cream from Dairy Queen
and some delicious chocolate from Donaldson's Chocolate!

Computer Lab

One of the expectations of state standards is that students need to be able to publish material. In computer lab, the students in the various grades have created books, or Power Points about everything from animals and insects, to who they would be if they lived in the past. Every grade creates something they can publish, but 5th grade gets to publish theirs in the real world. Our 5th graders are creating "adult goal" videos. To do this, they need to research a goal they have for adulthood, determine what it takes to reach that goal, evaluate the skills they already have and the obstacles they will need to overcome. Then they put it all together in a presentation. If they choose, they may create a video that we publish on YouTube, anonymously of course. Our fifth graders are doing a great job with this. The videos include animation and music and some of the students have even completed theirs and published them already! You can view them by going to YouTube and searching for the channel "Mrs. Holmes Computer Lab." Be sure to congratulate your student if you see one they did!

Fourth Grade Trip - State Museum

On April 1st, the 4th graders took a field trip to the Indiana State Museum. Students were able to see and experience firsthand, artifacts from Indiana history. There were many exhibits that showed and described historical periods, places, people, and events throughout time that helped the students understand the development of Indiana as a state. They also got to view an IMAX film titled National Parks Adventure. It took them on a virtual field trip through many national parks throughout the United States; exploring the physical features of the land. What a great hands on experience to help them learn about the state of Indiana!

Perry-Worth

"Heart and Sole"

Perry-Worth was the recipient of a second bench for being the largest collector of shoes for the Boone County "Heart and Sole" shoe drive! Our hard working student service team collected and sorted over 500 pairs of shoes! Congratulations to Mr. Miller's class for collecting the most shoes and earning an extra recess!

The following groups were recognized as Super Groups on Worlds Fair night: Bahamas, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Djibouti, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, Greece, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mali, Mexico, Morocco, North Korea, Russia, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Additionally, eight students won Grand Champion at the fair for their impressive figurative language and vivid imagery in their Language Arts World's Fair poems.
