Dear Lebanon Community School
Corporation Community:

It is hard to believe we are at the half way point of the current school year. The faculty and staff of LCSC wishes you a Happy New Year! It is our hope your family will have a safe and prosperous new year. Prosperity does not necessarily equate with monetary wealth. I believe prosperity can be found in many enriching ways such as the strengthening of our families and providing our children with a firm foundation to build upon in the future. I believe this form of prosperity can add greater value to the development of our children than monetary wealth. In reflection I would encourage all LCSC families to look at some of the small yet very meaningful family activities that can make a big difference for our children.

Family Support and Involvement - Children, adolescents, and young adults need to know they are loved and supported by caring adults that provide a safe environment, focused and positive direction, and loving discipline. Throughout 2016, make developing a strong family unit your highest priority and commit time to doing things as a family. The simple acts of conversation, physical activity, or just eating meals together can strengthen a family.

Time - Throughout the year, we have the tendency to fill our children's schedules with numerous activities. Work towards developing a family schedule that will allow children to be children and families to spend more time together. Over-commitment and too many structured activities can take away from the opportunities for a family to interact and spend quality time together. Try not to overlook the benefit of simple down-time when families can reflect and connect through the simple act of togetherness.

Learning - Support and encourage your child to be learners and to help them find the joy in learning opportunities. There are many avenues to developing knowledge, skills, and wisdom. The door can be open through daily basics of reading, writing, speaking, and math. In addition, it is important to practice and maintain our physical fitness. Developing a plan for personal fitness and/or participation in sports can help develop and maintain a healthy attitude and the energy to navigate our daily lives.

Character - Part of every successful educational program are activities that focus on developing our children into young men and women of character. For students and adults many times the majority of character development is learning through observation and life experiences that surround us every day. Not only to develop good students but more importantly to develop good friends, neighbors, and co-workers it is important that we develop young men and women that demonstrate the qualities of responsibility, respect, integrity, and care. These will serve them well throughout their lives.

I am sure you can add other resolutions. It is my hope you will continue throughout the New Year to invest in the future of your children and help them to develop the strong foundation that will serve them well throughout their lives. Through our continued partnership we can provide the students of LCSC with the guidance, support, encouragement, and instruction that is critical to the future of all children and young adults.

I look forward to the continued success of our students and welcome you into our schools to witness first-hand the great things that our students and LCSC staff have to offer.  Each time I see them, in the classroom, on the stage, on the court or in the hallways, I can enthusiastically and proudly say that I am honored to be the superintendent of such a great school district. Not only am I proud to be the superintendent, but also I am proud to call myself a resident of the Lebanon community!

Sincerely,

Superintendent of Schools

Major Saver

Small Card, BIG Results
2016 Lebanon Major Saver Campaign

The Lebanon Education Foundation is once again offering Major Saver cards for sale through the Lebanon schools. Students will receive the sales packets on Thursday, March 17th and continue selling the $10 discount cards until Wednesday, March 30th. Proceeds from the sale of Major Saver cards directly support the participating schools and the activities of the Lebanon Education Foundation. Last year, the Lebanon Education Foundation and participating schools raised over $6,500 through the sale of the Major Saver cards.

Major Saver cards can be purchased via cash, check or online at www.majorsaver.com. The online sale can be credited back to a particular student and school. All cards purchased online will be mailed directly to the customer. Prizes and credit to the student will be fulfilled by the end of the campaign. Major Saver cards can also be purchased, and credited to a student, through the Major Saver App. Once the free app is downloaded to an Android or iOS device, buyers can choose a Major Saver card through the "buy cards" tab on the app. Once the buyer completes the transaction the offers will be stored in the Major Saver App. Buyers can then redeem offers directly from the app and do not need a physical card.

Major Saver stresses safe selling and discourages door to door campaigning. The company encourages students to sell to family members, church patrons, neighbors, other adults the family may know; and to always make sure their parents are involved.

Please consider purchasing one or more Major Saver cards this year to help benefit the Lebanon Education Foundation and the Lebanon School District.

Thank you for your continued support!

100 Days Smarter
Central S.T.A.R.S are officially 100 days smarter! We celebrated our 100th day of school with lots of fun activities. Students enjoyed counting 10 groups of 10 and creating a 100 day snack. They also created t-shirts representing 100 items. Alexis Lahrman, kindergarten, created a shirt with Band-Aids stating she "survived 100 days at Central." On the back it read "and so did Miss Rissler." What a fun day of celebrating our 100 days of school and learning some great math concepts around 100!

What is AVID?

"What is AVID?" is a question that we hear often as AVID Elective Teachers. Many times students come home and say that they have been approached by a teacher in their school and given information about AVID, and as a parent you say "Ok" and never really know what AVID really is. So it is time for an AVID 101 Lesson?

What does AVID stand for?
Advancement Via Individual Determination

What is AVID?
AVID is not just another program at Lebanon High School; AVID is a philosophy that holds students accountable to the highest standards, provides academic and social support, and believes students will rise to the challenge. AVID is a global organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other post-secondary opportunities.

Who is an AVID Student?
AVID students are the middle of the road B and C students. They are often First Generation (first in their family to attend college and/or post-secondary training) but not always. The students have a dream of attending college but unsure how to achieve that dream.

What AVID Does
A simple explanation of the AVID System is, AVID trains educators to use proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college, and beyond. Within the AVID classrooms AVID:
  • Teaches skills and behavior for academic success
  • Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
  • Creates a positive peer group for students
  • Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
How AVID Works
AVID provides research-based strategies and curriculum to AVID Elective Teachers to develop students' critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas. AVID Elective Teachers incorporate teaching/learning methodologies in the following areas known as WICOR - Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to Learn.

Simply stated, AVID is a college readiness program for middle of the road students who want to attend college, and all learning is focused around WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading).

For additional information about AVID, please contact your child's guidance counselor.

Lebanon High School Art Students Win Awards in State Competition

Forester received an honorable mention for his photograph "Just Passing Through" and Meyers received a Gold Key award for her pen and ink drawing "Adelasters".

Both students' works will be honored at the state Scholastics Awards ceremony on February 28th at Clowe's Memorial Hall of Butler University. Meyers' drawing will also be shown as part of the winning exhibit at Clowe's Hall from February 3 through February 28. Her work will then advance to the national level in New York City, where it will be judged alongside other Gold Key winners from across the country.

Over 2500 Indiana students applied to this year's Scholastic Art competition. Of those, 458 were selected as honorable mention and only 176 received Gold Keys.
