Teachers

Dr. Taylor

As the title suggests, I am writing to you this month about a subject that I am very passionate about, recognizing the importance and influence of good teachers. Before I start I think I do need to share a small disclaimer. I am a third generation educator, my father and mother were educators, my wife is an educator, many of my extended family members are educators, and some of the most influential people in my life have been teachers. If you were to take just a few moments at this point and reflect back on those individuals that have made a difference in your own life, I am very confident at least one teacher immediately comes to your mind. Teachers make a difference, teachers can change a life, teachers need to be praised and appreciated. We need to take pride in our teachers.

I am truly blessed to have spent my professional career; indeed a majority of my adult life, serving my community as an educator and doing something that I believe makes a significance difference in a person's life. I am a believer that the profession of teaching has earned the right to be respected and recognized for the impact it has had on all children, and not ridiculed or diminished because it makes for a good redirection of responsibility that covers a wealth of unrelated social and political concerns.

The teachers I have had the privilege of working with here in the Lebanon Community School system exemplify, on a daily basis, everything I believe justifies and reinforces my unwavering admiration and praise of teachers.

Many people have an extraordinary amount of knowledge that would be very useful to students, but what makes the difference between those individuals and great teachers, is a teacher takes pride in knowing how to share that knowledge with all students, regardless of ability or desire. Great educators teach in ways that are meaningful and relevant to each student. Great teaching often has less to do with wisdom and skills, and more to do with attitude and dedication to their students.

Great teachers cannot be defined by a "one size fits all" set of predetermined criteria. Great teachers come to work every day prepared to meet the challenges of the day with a strong sense of P.R.I.D.E.

Persistent -ready to preserve through all challenges
Respectful -accept the responsibility to serve others in the pursuit of a greater good
Initiative -possess the ability to adapt and improvise to meet the needs of all students
Dependability - to be academically ready, professionally responsible, and personally committed
Efficient - organized, prepared, and ready to maximize every teachable moment

All great teachers come every single day with an unwavering sense of professional pride and commitment. I hope you can take a few minutes to introduce yourself to your child's teacher and see for yourself why you should be proud of your child's teacher and your community's schools. As this school year unfolds I will be sharing more with you about the powerful meaning the simple word Pride has for students, parents and teachers.

Sincerely,

Central S.T.A.R.S.

Welcome back! We have had a wonderful start to our 2015-2016 school year! This year we are excited to welcome back students, welcome new students, and we have also had some additions to our staff. Welcome to Central, Diana Fields (3rd grade) Chaleen Crose (5th grade), Kathleen Dugan (Art), Vanessa VanderWal (music) and our new Café Manager, Linda Dombrosky.

Our Central S.T.A.R.S have been busy at work learning procedures, getting to know classmates and their teacher. This year at Central, we will continue our School Wide Positive Behavior Support Program, STARbucks. Throughout the day, we will be looking for S.T.A.R.S. Student who are showing the attributes of Student Leadership, Trustworthy, Awesome Attitudes, Respectful and Safe. If we see this, we will hand them a STARbuck. This ticket will be turned into a raffle and they will have a chance to win a prize on Friday. They will also use half of the ticket to place in a class star. Once their class star is filled with earned STARbucks, their class can vote on a reward. We are looking forward to acknowledging all those positive behaviors we are seeing every day!

We are excited for another great school year here at Central!

SOS Program Seeks Mentors

The Success of Students (SOS) program is entering its third year at Lebanon Middle School. The mission of the SOS program is to promote increased academic excellence for our lowest level of academic learners by seeking to provide quality mentors and enrichment opportunities. We are now included in the Boone County Mentoring Initiative. SOS follows the SCORE program and precedes the Graduation Coach Program, providing support and mentoring from elementary through high school. We currently have 45 students, but many of these students are in need of a mentor. If you are interested, or would like more information on how to become a mentor for the SOS program please call Betsy Dulhanty at LMS (482-3400) extension #22631.

LHS Students Participate in Team Building Trip

LHS students are excitedly preparing for their annual overnight fieldtrip at McCormick¹s Creek State Park. LHS partners with Camptown Inc, where students learn how to cook over a fire and how to set up a campsite. A favorite activity is exploring Wolf Cave, and participating in a no flashlight night hike.

It is a great way to start the year as we work on building a united team where all students are encouraged to learn and work together.
