The yellow buses will be parked at the bus barn, the school buildings will be receiving a fresh coat of paint, the summer work crews will be cutting the grass and scraping gum off the bottom of desks and students will begin another summer of "time off" from school. While the normal school day will fade into a distant memory very quickly I want to suggest that while we all need to let our children enjoy summer fun, the next couple of months is a great time to take advantage of all kinds of learning opportunities for kids and parents. From something as detailed as a family trip, to just spending time mowing the grass together, summer time offers up a number of great opportunities for you and your children to keep right on learning and having a good time. School lunches can be replaced with a trip for an ice cream cone, music class can be replaced with some time spent at a summer concert (many are free during the summer), math and reading opportunities are all around us, and practicing being a good citizen and person never goes out of style. I would encourage each of you to make these next couple of months a summer to remember. A summer of rediscovering the "fun of learning".

Here are just a couple of ideas for summer learning fun:

  • Check with our local department of parks and recreation about camps and other activities. Find out what exhibits, events, or concerts are happening in Lebanon over the summer.

  • Watching TV is a given for most of our children but was about with the sound off and closed captioning on. Watching TV and reading, what a great idea.

  • Reading directions for how to play a new game, and then wagering an ice cream cone on who wins.

  • Letting the children help with meals by writing up a grocery list, finding things in the grocery store, and reading the recipe aloud for mom or dad during cooking time.

  • Summer Writing - Give each of your children a stamped, addressed postcard so they can write to you about their summer adventures, or recycle school notebooks and paper into summer journals or scrapbooks. Another way to engage young writers is to encourage your children to spend some time researching and writing. Not only does it build research and writing skills, but helps kids develop a deeper sense of understanding on issues they are interested in.

  • Be an active citizen. Kids who participate in community service activities gain not only new skills but self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • Real world reading. Many online news outlets (CNN, ABC, CBS, HNN, NBC) offer online access to local and world events by providing access to hundreds of news articles.

  • Active bodies. Active minds. The NFL's Play 60 initiative and First Lady Michele Obama's Let's Move initiative have lots of ideas to help kids get the 60 minutes of active play they need every day. We have a wonderful city park that is a great place to spend time.

  • Make cool things. "Dad, dad, dad, can we make a samurai sword?..." Crafty ideas that bring families and kids together can be fun and educational. Make a wizard's wand, paper planes, spaceships, and quirky things like an origami art display can all be a wonderful and fun learning experience.

  • Make sure kids have something to read during the summer - put books into children's hands.

  • Get to know your community's public library better. Find out if your public library is part of the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a grassroots effort to provide high-quality summer reading programs for kids.

And there are a number of online activities for families and students that will put a technology theme into summer learning. Here are just a few examples of good interactive educational websites parents and kids can explore together.

  • National Geographic Kids: Great nature videos, activities, games, stories, and more

  • Discovery Kids: Video, games and activities to explore dinosaurs, sharks, space, pets, history and more

  • Young Explorers: Museum Run, The Great Dig, Time Explorer and more online games from the British Museum

  • Smithsonian Kids Collecting: how to start your own collection and see what other kids collect

  • Explore Dinosaurs: FAQs and top 10 myths about dinosaurs, a virtual dig, behind the scenes tours, and more from the National Museum of Natural History

  • NASA Quest: Interactive explorations that engage students in real science and engineering. Topics include robots, helicopters, lunar exploration, and designing your own human-friendly planet

  • My Wonderful World: A multimedia tour of our seven continents

  • Time for Kids: Fun games (The Great State Race), an online weekly magazine written for kids, and news from around the world

While summer break can and should be a fun time for families to relax, rejuvenate, and reconnect it can also be a great time to extend student learning and exploration. I would encourage families to explore their learning options and spend some quality summer time exploring the world of lifelong learning.

Have a great and safe summer!

Field Day Full of Fun

Our Central Stars faced the cooler temperatures and had a blast on Field Day! Led by our fearless leader, Mrs. Rabb, along with several brave volunteers, our Central Stars played field games and collaborated with their teams. Even though temperatures were in the 50's, these students still had a great attitude and were asking to be sprayed with water hoses! Our 5th grade leaders led their troops through 18 different field day activities. Each team had great spirit, were decorated in team colors and face paint, and traveled together through the day. It was the responsibility of our 5th grade leaders to lead students of all grade levels and keep the team motivated and on task, they did a fantastic job and truly showed us they are S.T.A.R.S (Student Leaders, Trustworthy, Awesome Attitudes, Respectful and Safe.)

Thank you to our PTO for sponsoring the event, Mrs. Rabb for organizing the event, our parent volunteers and staff. What a great day!

Book Challenge

Fourth grade students were asked to challenge themselves to read more this school year. As a reward for their efforts students reaching goals of 10 books read, 20 books read, 30 books read, and the ultimate goal of 40 were given different amounts of duct tape that they used to secure their teachers to the cafeteria wall. Students reading and reporting on 40 books also earned an after school bowling trip with their teachers. Mrs. Burpo, Mrs. Fields, and Miss Robey hope that both events will motivate more students to participate in the fifth grade reading challenge they have planned. I wonder what next year's reading rewards will be... teachers kissing pigs or sleeping on the roof of the school? Dying their hair purple or becoming a human hotdog with all the fixings? Stay tuned!

Harney's Third Grade Students Participate in STEM

Third Graders at Harney Elementary participated in two STEM projects recently. STEM teaches students the basics of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. On the first day, students learned the basics of coding and wrote lines of code that moved an Angry Bird to capture a pig. The next day they helped Disney's Frozen characters, Elsa and Anna, create snowflakes by writing code. Students were encouraged to log on to the websites at home, where there are free tutorials on how to write basic programs. For more information, visit to  code.org.

Students also worked on an engineering project through the City X Project. For this project, students pretended they were the support staff to a colony who had landed on a distant planet. Each group is assigned a colonist who has a problem. Students then had to create a device to help the colonist that they could print with a 3D printer they had on the planet. They first designed the device with Playdoh and then drew it using a CAD (Computer Aided Design) program. Students participating in this program learned teamwork, empathy, creativity, and design. More information about this program can be found at cityxproject.com.

Harney Running Club

The mini running club at Harney had their end of the year Mile Fun Run this week. It is the culminating activity after their month long running club for first and second graders. Students met once a week before school to run and earn charms for miles completed. Forty-eight runners joined in and ran an average of 6 miles. Students were cheered on during the race by their peers. Jacob Moore finished the run in 6:28. After the run, students enjoyed snacks and received a special t-shirt commemorating their first Harney Cardinal Run.

Governor Pence Chooses Perry-Worth Elementary for Bill Signing

Perry-Worth  had the honor of hosting Governor Mike Pence for his signing of Indiana's $31 billion dollar, two year budget plan into law on Tuesday, May 7, 2015. Perry-Worth student services Aaron Carter, Emily Spencer, Murphy Adams, and Andrew Phelps greeted and escorted the Governor to the gym where the event took place.

Dr. Robert Taylor introduced Governor Pence and opened his introduction with "this is setting the course for the future and not living in the past."

Governor Pence applauded Perry-Worth's staff for their dedication and hard work towards earning an "A" grade rating over the last two years, and for the third grade teachers for exceeding the 90% state benchmark for the IREAD3 test scores. Governor Pence opened his speech declaring "Lebanon is one of the finest school corporations in the United States of America."

The Lebanon Middle School AVID and
Jazz Band

The middle school jazz band performed at Ulen Country Club for the Lebanon Kiwanis Club on May 14. Having student musicians as their guests is a perfect fit for Kiwanis, whose mission is to help kids. The jazz band students played the music from their Variety Show performance and Mrs. Springer, the band director, talked a little about the unique nature of jazz music. "There is one student on each part, and the music is very difficult. Despite that, most kids tell me that jazz band is the most fun class! Jazz is America's art form; it was created here and it's important that American musicians have a chance to learn about it and play it. "

The Tiger ROARS 2022 - 5th Grade Classes Visit LMS

The Tiger ROARS 2022 provided the current 5th grade LCSC students with an opportunity to visit on May 20, 2015, and become familiar with Lebanon Middle School and the opportunities available once they are 6th graders. When they first arrived, the Pep band played while NJHS/FFA members and other registration helpers greeted them in the auxiliary gym at tables that were divided up by last names. At the table, students received color and number coded nametags and a ticket for door prizes. After all students had arrived, the LMS Administration and guidance department briefly introduced them to LMS. The opening session concluded with a performance by the LMS Pep band, led by Mrs. Springer.

The 5th graders were then divided into three groups for the rotation between the Activity Fair in the Media Center, Building tours, and a Guidance/Administration discussion in the gym. The current LMS students that were representing clubs and athletics in the activity fair created table displays to promote the opportunities available within their organization. A 7th grade student introduced the 5th graders to the activity fair and the activity representatives each introduced their respective activity. At the conclusion of the session in the media center, the 7th grade student provided time for questions and answers. NJHS/FFA members stood with number signs, split their group up by the number on the students' name tag (1-10) and started at various places around the middle school to give the students a building tour. While in the gym, Administration and Guidance discussed procedures and expectations while at LMS to set the stage for success. Tables were also on display to highlight each exploratory class available to 6th grade students. Each group had the opportunity to rotate through each station.

The 5th graders all regrouped in the gym for closing remarks, received goodie bags containing LMS gear, and then traveled to the cafeteria for their first lunch at LMS. The bags included Class of 2022 silicone bracelets, folders, informational sheets on LMS opportunities, a school map, a listing of athletic staff and 6th grade faculty, a paw print pencil and a kit kat (for being a tiger). Students were then treated to a performance by the Vivo Choir, led by Mr. Jacob Smith, Mrs. Willman's maternity leave substitute. After the performance, the 5th graders received instruction regarding lunch procedures, ate lunch and completed the day with the door prize drawing. Forty students received either an LMS t-shirt, sucker or water bottle donated by the LMS FFA and LMS Athletic Department. Funds provided through the LEF grant covered the cost of nearly everything used for the event.

Kiwanis

Senior members of the Boone County Kiwanis Global Youth Leadership Academy were challenged at the beginning of the year to create a community service project that fits the needs of our community. The seniors decided to team up with WEBO to create a camp for elementary students to learn how to exercise right and eat healthy. The seniors received a grant through Youth as Resources to help fund the food and activities. The camp, which was organized solely by the seniors, took place on May 9 at Crossfit 180 and hosted approximately 10 kids!
