As the end to another successful year is rapidly approaching, I would like to publicly express my appreciation for the on-going support and active involvement the City of Lebanon provides to the students and staff of Lebanon Community Schools. From the support of Mayor Huck Lewis and a variety of city agencies, to the highly effective student mentoring program that many community members are involved in, the assistance in both financial contribution and personal stewardship has had a positive impact on the students and staff of the Lebanon School system.
Recently, the Lebanon City Council approved a new ordinance that will allow Lebanon City police to work in closer support with the Lebanon School resource officers to ensure a safer Lebanon High School parking area. Over the last several months, Mr. Jay McCloskey, manager of the Lebanon Utilities has worked closely with the Lebanon High School staff to create a new internship program that was developed specifically for graduates of Lebanon High school. With the increased awareness focus on school to work and post-secondary vocational opportunities, Mayor Lewis has provided active support in securing funding for a new career counselor and community business coordinator position that will assist students who are pursuing school to work opportunities as well as coordinate with local business to promote employment opportunities for LHS graduates. These are just a few examples of our city leaders responding to the needs of the school system and taking the steps necessary to provide Lebanon Schools with that extra effort and support for our students.
Over the last several years projects such as the creation of the Herman B Wells Community Room as part of the renovation of Lebanon High School, the addition of a graduation coach at the high school, and the mentoring program for the elementary schools are just some of the examples of financial contributions that have been initiated and supported by Mayor Lewis and the City Council. A total of over $700,000 has been provided to support those programs. We are fortunate to be part of a community where children and education is a priority and action by our civic leaders is evidenced every day.
I am also pleased to share that the contribution of support and services is not just a one-way street. This year, Lebanon Community Schools working with the members of the Lebanon Utilities established a program for sharing the advance lightning strike warning system. The early warning system the school corporation put into place to alert coaches, student athletes and event attendees about approaching lightning is now being used by members of the utility department to warn linemen and field workers of the same potential disasters. Expanding the alert services to our city workers helps keep them safe as they work in severe weather conditions.
Mayor Huck Lewis, City Council President Jeremy Lamar, Lebanon Park Director John Messenger, and Lebanon Utilities manager Mr. Jay McCloskey, along with the various department heads and city employees, are to be commended and complimented for their unwavering support and involvement in our communities' future, and more importantly the future of the students at Lebanon Community School Corporation.
With sincere appreciation and community pride,
Robert L. Taylor, Ed.D.

Central Carnival
Central students, staff and families had a wonderful time at the school carnival on Friday, April 24th. This fun event was sponsored by our PTO. Central students and families were able to participate in lots of games and raffles. The most popular event was the dunk tank! Mr. Christian, Mrs. Ziats, Mrs. Harter, Mrs. Lahrman, Mr. Simpson and Mrs. Frederick all took their turn in the dunk tank. Students lined up anxiously to try and dunk their teachers! Mrs. Frederick came prepared and had a water cannon ready to squirt anyone who dunked her. Other events were the famous cake walk, ring toss to win a soda, BINGO, karaoke, and cookie decorating. Students also lined up to jump around in the bounce house. Central families look forward to this event every year. Thank you to our PTO for this great event!

Field Trips Give Students Adventure and New Knowledge

Recently, Harney's third grade classes went to Connor Prairie on a learning trip. Below are a few short stories about their adventures.
I went to Connor Prairie today and it was awesome! One of the areas we went to, was the Civil War place. The actors played the part of townspeople and soldiers. One of the things I learned is that we had people fight in the war so other soldiers did not come and burn down buildings. When we were there, we pretended to be soldiers and march with wooden guns. Having the actors play the enemy soldiers was scary. They weren't nice to the others and they even tried to steal from the townspeople. There many other areas to visit as well. My favorite was Prairie Town and the hot air balloon.
- Gabby D.
Today we went to Connor Prairie. These are the things we learned about. The Civil War Journey in time. Captain Morgan of the Rebellions of South America were the ones to start the Civil War. They wanted the North part of America for themselves so they could have fresh horses, plants, and more supplies. If you ever go to Connor Prairie, got o the theater where you watch a real story of the Civil War!

7th Grade Mock Trial
|
Lawyers: Harrison Love and Kye Zimmerman, Judge: Jon Lockhart, Witness: Abby Rose
|
| Lawyers: RJ Rollins Genna Steffy |
The Korematsu vs. United States Supreme Court trial was brought to life by Lebanon Middle School's 7th grade students in both Mrs. Cross and Mr. Fisher's Language Arts classes.
Students played an active role preparing for and participating in this mock trial. Select students were appointed roles such as: lawyers for the defense and the prosecution, judge, bailiff, news reporters, historic witnesses, jury members, and of course the defendant. The trial took place in each class period, allowing every student the opportunity to reenact a role that fit him or her best.
Lawyers researched the case, prepared opening statements, and confidently delivered a variety of questions for their own witnesses and for the cross examination of witnesses. Witnesses prepared statements so they could play the part. The judge, having studied the objection process, boldly sustained or overruled objections, the bailiff practiced his/her lines to swear in the witnesses, and news reporters conducted interviews while managing the camera. Jury members researched the historic account of the trial, took notes throughout the trial, and assumed the civic responsibility of making a fair and just verdict. Students were given a challenging task and eagerly took ownership in their learning - taking pride in their roles and even suited up for the trial - suit jackets, gavel and all!
These middle school students learned the value of preparing to succeed. Harrison Love mentioned, "You need the facts before you do anything. You have to be prepared." Drew Davidson commented, "I learned trials can be intense, but I enjoyed when I went up to the stand." Juliana Garcia noticed and enjoyed "how everyone was trying to be serious" even though each class had its own set of laughs throughout each trial. Seth Grow admitted, "Being on the stand had my adrenaline pumping! I also learned an injustice was done."
The mock trial served as a holistic assessment after 7th grade students studied their way through Jeanne Wakatsuki's memoir, Farewell to Manzanar. They learned about the effects of Pearl Harbor, the challenges Japanese Americans faced while living in the internment camps during WWII, and the author's purpose for writing her memoir after nearly twenty years of privately holding onto her memories.
Fred Korematsu's case was mentioned in the memoir and was one of three trials for Japanese Americans who avoided the internment camps. Students connected the lessons learned in the memoir with Korematsu's case and had to form their own opinions. Even though the Supreme Court ruled Korematsu guilty in 1944, most students agreed with the ruling of innocent as decided when the case was reopened and overturned in 1983. A vital lesson was learned throughout this unit; as stated by Abby Rose, "What I learned from the mock trial is that it doesn't matter what color you are, the only thing that matters is that you're equal."

The students researched organizations and ideas and then developed a plan for the service project and for recruitment. Since January, 60 LHS AVID students have worked with eight organizations locally and globally to volunteer over 200 hours of community service. Thank you to The Caring Center, Clinton County Humane Society, CrownPointe Senior Living, Shalom House, LHS Best Buddies, Thirst Project, Lebanon Middle School Tutoring, and Boone County Pork Producers for allowing us to work with their organizations and individuals in completing the community service projects. Good job, LHS AVID Students!

IUPUI Visit
On Friday, March 27, students from the LHS AVID 9-11 and Graduation Coach programs traveled to IUPUI's campus in Indianapolis. Students attended a presentation on IUPUI's admission process, the academic and extracurricular atmosphere, and the excitement of campus life. In addition, students were given a walking tour of the campus and ate lunch in the Tower Dining Hall before returning to LHS. Sophomore Haley Richardson commented afterwards, "I have been on 3 other college visits. None of them have really had much of an interest to me and some of them I did not really have a good experience at. As soon as I saw the campus of IUPUI I loved it. I loved the way the classrooms were set up and thought it was great that there was such a wide variety of students. Overall the campus and the visit was awesome." Next year students will have the opportunity to visit one private one public university/college, which will make this the seventh post-secondary study trip for 2015-2016 AVID 11 students.
