ISTEP Testing More Than Alphabet Soup

Dr. Taylor

If you have been anywhere near a TV, radio, or newspaper in the last couple of weeks the state of Indiana public education is clear as... well let's just say I am glad we have such great students because the behavior of some of our adults has been less than flattering. While the debate about "he said she said" accusations will continue on for months and years to come, what is truly important is the upcoming series of state assessment exams we know as the ISTEP. For a number of years now all students in grades 3-8 have been required to take part in the Indiana state assessment program known as ISTEP. More recently the state has required students in 3rd grade to take a standardized reading exam, and students enrolled in Algebra 1 and Biology take an end of course assessment more commonly known as the ECA. The results of those exams have been used to determine student achievement, levels of academic growth, school performance grades, and more recently teacher pay. Regardless of the adult debate that has been ongoing and polarizing on the whole testing issue, the one constant has been our students have always participated in the assessment process and over the years our Lebanon students have continually improved.

In light of the recent discussions and attempts to justify one political position over another I thought I would try to give a brief explanation to what we understand is the latest testing requirements and provide you with the specific Lebanon Schools testing calendar. First, the original proposal of increasing the test times to over 11 hours has been changed to reduce the test time. The chart below provides the adjusted times in comparison to the original times and lists the time for last year's test.

The testing window allowed by the state dictates that we schedule the ISTEP exams within a mandated time. The chart below provides the test window by grade level, with the required number of testing minutes. The first chart outlines the elementary school schedules and the second chart is for the middle school.

While I hope these charts have provided a little more clarification, if you have any questions I would encourage you to contact your child's building principal for further clarification. I would also ask that you help your child prepare for these tests by talking to them about the importance of "doing their best" but at the same time minimize any stress levels they may have by reminding them this test is not the end of the world, it is simply a chance for each student to show how much they have learned and are continuing to learn. While the state and those politicians who choose to use our children's education as a debating football will continue to be more worried about the test than the test taker we need to remember that what is truly important is our children and making sure they are provided the best possible education and educational environment.

So thank you in advance for your support and encouragement. Together we can make sure our students, your children, have every chance to do their personal best.

With sincere appreciation,

Robert L. Taylor, Ed.D.

Donuts for Dads

The Perry-Worth PTO held its annual "Donuts for Dads", where Dads, Grandpas, Uncles or male figures in a student's life, came and had some good one-on-one time with each other! In addition to having a donut or two, they also learned about the Watch D.O.G.S. program available at Perry-Worth where Dads or male role models can come and spend the day in the school assisting in various classrooms and interacting with the students. We had a great turn out. Thank you to everyone who came to our school!

Science Fair

We had over 100 participants in this year's Perry-Worth Science fair! Congratulations to all of the winners in each grade! Good luck at regionals coming up in March!
