What is school?

IDr. Taylorf you were to ask that question to almost everyone, their response would have been formulated by their own experiences and opportunities. Webster's New World Dictionary describes a school as "a place or institution for teaching and learning; establishment for education". I think those among us who have not been in a modern classroom would agree with that definition or even more simply say that school is a collection of classrooms, laboratories and a cafeteria.

To fully understand what the term means when it is applied to any one of the six schools that makes up the Lebanon Community School Corporation, it is necessary to think not in terms of buildings, classrooms and laboratories, but in terms of people and programs that make our schools so much more than simple definitions.

Simply walk into any one of the LCSC schools and you will quickly see the students, faculty and staff in each school are what make each building a unique and very special place. Like a family makes a house a home; teachers, administrators and support staff are what make our schools a place of caring and concern.

During this time of year if you are just cold and bored, I would encourage each of you to go visit one of the Lebanon schools. Within a matter of minutes you will see and feel the warmth and caring that is at the heart of every classroom. You will hear and see concerned and committed adults working with every child to make that one moment in time a meaningful and significant learning experience. More important than seeing and hearing all that makes Lebanon schools more than just a collection of individual classrooms and buildings, you will feel that sense of caring for each special student. You will become a part, even for a brief moment, of all that goes into makings our Lebanon school buildings more than just a collection of classrooms.

I would hope each of you can visit and discover that wonder which is your child's school. At Lebanon Community Schools you are always welcome.  Please call your child's principal today and plan your next visit to LCSC.

Best wishes,

Robert L. Taylor, Ed.D.

Central News

Central's 4th grade students are gearing up for Science Fair! Science Fair is a mandatory event for 4th grade students and a voluntary event for all other grade levels. To get students in the spirit of science, Central invited Pandora Woodward, from the Purdue Extension Office, to present the Scientific Method to all Central students. Ms. Woodward demonstrated several experiments to our students including concepts about density, inertia, velocity and chemical reactions. Our Central Stars were amazed to see candy and soda pop blow up a balloon and see how density was demonstrated by layers of liquid. Ms. Woodward also spoke with our 4th grade class specifically on how to conduct a successful Science Fair experiment.

Science Fair Information: All 4th grade students will participate in Science Fair and any other student may if they would like. Applications for Science Fair can be picked up in the Central office from our secretary, Merrie Dace. Applications are due to school by February 5th and our Science Fair will take place on February 19th. Fourth grade students will be bringing a packet of information home. We are looking forward to another fantastic day of Science at Central!

PLEASE NOTE: On two-hour delays, the morning preschool will attend from 10:15-12:15.

Student Council
Student Council provides student leadership for Harney Elementary. Two representatives from each fourth and fifth grade class make up the Council, with Mrs. Burpo (4th grade) and Miss Parker (5th grade) as advisors. They meet monthly.

Council reps raise funds by selling school supplies. Brightly colored erasers, mechanical pencil leads, and Colts pencils are just a few of the items for sale at the Bird House on Wednesdays. This year's Student Council has chosen to think globally, but act locally and will use its fundraising proceeds to benefit the Lebanon Boys' and Girls' Club.

Have you ever wondered what happens to those little box tops coupons you turn in regularly? Student Council reps have the tedious job of cutting them down to size before giving them to the PTO to redeem.

Student Council members act as role models for the students at Harney Elementary. They are held to a higher behavioral standard and must maintain good grades to remain on the Council. The reps strive to live the Harney House rules!

Movie Night

January 9th HBS PTO hosted a Movie Night with Monster University. We had a great turnout, over 150, for our first try. The children had a good time and we had enough snacks for all! Thanks to all the volunteers for making and selling popcorn and helping ensure safe pickup of all students. It's a very caring gesture that the money from snacks will be matched by the PTO to help our families displaced from the recent fire. What a great group of individuals.

Ambassadors 2014-2015
This year HBS has invited certain 4th and 5th graders to enter into our Ambassador program. These wonderful leaders are staying after school each week to be trained and learn not only about our school lifelines but how to teach them to our entire school! Each month our student Ambassadors go into their adopted classrooms and teach their students about the Shamrock Lifeline of the month. Initiative is the Shamrock Lifeline for January and our student Ambassadors taught their lessons to the school on Wednesday, January 21st. Each student is given a Family Connect form each month to return that shows students at home are learning and discussing the monthly Lifeline. Parents can support all our students by helping return the Family Connect forms and asking their students about the Lifeline of the month. Ambassadors for 2014-2015 are:  Treyton Achor, Landon Bailey Tatum Banks, Michael Bautista, Erica Brock, Jade Fearrin, Korbyn Grow, Megan Hemmerle, Grace-Ann Merchant, Dilynn Shockley, Gracie Shockley, Lauren Starnes, Kaylynn Wiley, Brennen Ping, Conner Bragg, Tyiah Brown, Malachi Butler, Gabi Cervantes, Lotus Crane, Sydney Daisley, Maren Devlin, Noelle Effinger, Jazlyn Gramlin, Taylor Gramlin, Emaley Hughes, Jaheem Joseph, Aryen Kinzer, Kate-Lynn Lambson, William Lloyd, Madison McClaine, Raven Robinson, Jasmine Scott, Jessica Scott, Michael Stambaugh, Jordan Taylor, Ronnie Thieme and Alexis Wines.

This outstanding program would not be made possible without our staff that goes above the call of duty. Each week Mrs. Passwater, Mrs. Wheeler and Ms. Preuschl stay and teach our Ambassadors but also give time and support daily to allow this program to run in our school building. Thank you Ambassadors and teachers!

Odyssey
Parents, our Odyssey Prize Incentive program has started! Students can log onto the computer program from home at any time. As they advance through their personal lessons they will earn charms for their own necklace and tickets to be put a drawing. In May we will host a Prize Give-A-Way and students names will be drawn. The more your student works and earns tickets the greater their chance of winning some really great prizes will be when May arrives! Students can log on to their account by going to our website and scrolling to the lower left side of the screen. The Odyssey icon will take the student to the link.

At Avon in the AA division, the Tigerettes placed 3rd in the Jazz competition and 2nd in Hip Hop competition.
