Lebanon High School 1:1 Computer Program
Lebanon High School's 1:1 Learning Initiative is in its second year and students are being opened to worldwide learning opportunities. LHS professionals are promoting academic excellence and graduate students who have character and skills to be productive and successful citizens in today's world. Each student receives a MacBook Air, power charger, extension cord, and a computer bag. Both students and staff receive professional development and continuing assistance on how to use the device. Students are expected to use the computers for educational purposes and in a responsible manner. Computers are monitored by the LCSC Technology Department and our Internet filtering company called Lightspeed. No matter where the computer is being used, the computers are always being filtered. So if a website is blocked at school, such as Facebook, it is also blocked outside of school.
Early this year, members from the Indiana Office of the Attorney General spoke to our LHS students about digital responsibility and their digital footprint. Students were given information about what people do online can affect the rest of their life and delete does not really mean it is gone forever. LHS teachers follow-up and continue to teach students about digital citizenship.
The LHS staff works hard to help keep the computers safe and secure. Here are a few simple rules that are enforced at LHS:
-
Bring the computer to school every day fully charged
-
Do not spray any type of cleaner on the screen
-
Stop by the AppleCare Center at LHS with any issues
-
Keep out of extreme temperatures
-
Be careful around people and animals
-
Never leave the computer unattended
-
Do not swap or share your computer with anyone
-
Logout when not using it
-
Do not eat or drink around the computer
-
Never close the lid with something on the keyboard
-
Always transport the computer in the computer bag
Tips for Parents/Guardians at home:
-
Have your child use the computer in a common area
-
Limit time on the computer/Internet for educational purposes only
-
Set and enforce rules at home, such as charging the computer overnight in a common area.
-
Communicate with your child the clear and decisive rules at home
The 1:1 program is off to a terrific start again this school year. Nearly a dozen school corporations have visited LHS to see our 1:1 program in action because they have heard how well our students and staff are doing. LHS Senior Justin Garrard Indianapolis Colts Academic All-Star

Congratulations LHS Senior Justin Garrard for being named to the Indianapolis Colts Academic All-Star Team. Justin was recognized at the Indianapolis Colts game verses the Houston Texans on Sunday, December 14, 2014. Justin is a standout student-athlete at Lebanon High School as evidenced by his number one ranking in the senior class. LHS is very proud of Justin for all his hard work, and this award is an honor well deserved.
LHS Key Club
The month of December was a busy one this year for Key Club. Members participated in service projects at the Shalom House and Caring Center as well as gift wrapping at Damar, which was a great way to get in the holiday spirit! We wrapped up our big November project, Dinner in the Dark, and were able to send a check for nearly seven hundred dollars to VIPS, beating our total from last year and setting a goal to reach for next year.
This month our club held our annual canned food drive, Attack Hunger, which featured enthusiastic participation from staff and students alike. With the school's combined efforts we were able to donate over three thousand cans to the Caring Center and the food pantry at Hattie B. Stokes Elementary.
In addition to the food drive we partnered with the Key Club at Western Boone and the Lebanon Kiwanis Club for a joint project benefiting UNICEF's Eliminate Project. During a quarter break at the Lebanon-Western Boone basketball game, four members from each club ran up and down the bleachers and collected as much money as possible from their team's fans in one minute. Altogether, $389.60 was collected, with Lebanon coming out on top with around $220. We have had a great start to the school year and look forward to keeping the momentum in 2015!
Lebanon DECA Takes Off in Second Year

With the 1st semester coming to an end, the Lebanon DECA organization has begun to grow and flourish.
On November 4th, the leadership group of Nathan Venis, Denis Prevost, Zach Schroeder and Sydney Bolyard attended the Fall Leadership Conference at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. This event gave the team the chance to meet, interact and learn from other DECA organizations, state universities, and business leaders of the Indiana Pacers organization. The sponsors also had the opportunity to pick up valuable information regarding other DECA organizations in schools all around the state. The day ended with students getting a chance to shoot on the Pacers home floor and then attend a Pacers game that night.
One of the major components of the DECA organization is competition. In November the IDEA Challenge offered students throughout the country the chance to work with a team and develop an entrepreneurial idea for the use of a household product. The groups had one week to create an idea, develop the product, and create a 3-minute video demonstrating the new idea. Two DECA groups came together and created some very interesting and useful products. The group of Nathan Venis, Dustin Kenna, Cole Miller, and Denis Prevost created a blanket to aid the homeless. The group of Ethan Greene and Michael Jeffrey created a household rug. The ideas and videos were creative and inventive. National winners will be announced in January.
District competition is also right around the corner and several members are testing and studying in preparation for competition. Ten members have been practicing diligently for the upcoming competition on January 10th at Westfield High School. The competition will be fierce, as nearly 600 students from local schools will be competing. Winners at Westfield will have the chance to compete at the state competition in Indianapolis in March. Good luck to all the competitors.
LHS Art
The LHS Art department showcased a variety of student work during the Christmas music program. Featuring original paintings, drawings, sculpture and digital designs, the art show demonstrated the breadth of work students have created over the last semester.
LHS Thirst Project Christmas Concert
On Thursday, January 18, 2014, students from LHS hosted their first annual LHS Thirst Project Christmas Concert. The concert was held as a fundraiser to support the high school's efforts to build a third freshwater well in an underprivileged community in Africa. LHS Students donated over $15,000 during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years to build the first two wells, and the goal is to raise approximately $8000 this year to build a third well. Almost one billion people on our planet don't have access to safe, clean drinking water and proper sanitation. It is estimated that 4,100 children die every day from diseases caused by contaminated water which is a child every 20 seconds of the day every day. This is comparable to over ten jumbo jet airliners crashing every day. Imagine the sense of urgency there would be if 4,100 people were dying everyday due to airline crashes. The good news is that by providing access to a safe water source, disease consistently drops by 88% nearly overnight and child mortality drops by over 90%. The students at LHS are committed to saving the lives of men, women, and the precious children who live in communities that do have access to safe drinking water. The LHS Thirst Project Christmas Concert raised over $1800.00 that will go towards this year's goal of $8000. A special thank you goes out to our student performers who were Julia Garrard, Sally Everett, Charlotte Skillington, Nicole Boyer, Joe DeVries, Christian Wilson, Garett Crow, George Piper, Sophie Morgan, Nathan Latham, Matt Creek, Rachel Thomas, Justin Garrard, and Benji Hudson. In addition, Luke Wheat did an exceptional job organizing the event and providing back stage, organizational, and technical support. Mr. Wade Thatcher was also very helpful through his continued support during rehearsal and during the concert. There were also several other students that helped make this event a huge success. Great job to the LHS students for putting on a wonderful Christmas concert while supporting our Thirst Project efforts.
