Trivia question - How many different languages are spoken in the homes of students who attend Lebanon Community Schools?

On Tuesday, November 25th, Lebanon High School was the host to 25 Chinese teachers. They came to Lebanon by choice to see first-hand our schools, meet our teachers, talk (with an interpreter at times) to our students, observe our instructional programs, and to learn how an "A" school corporation becomes an "A" school corporation. I had the professional pleasure of welcoming these visiting Chinese educators at a welcome luncheon hosted at the Herman B Wells Community Center.

Needless to say, this group of visiting teachers was extremely impressed with our schools, very engaged with our teachers, and highly complementary of the learning and teaching programs they observed in our schools. In the opinion of these visiting international educators, Lebanon was the definition of a "world class education". While I was very proud of the kind words and equally appreciative of the compliments, I also realize that being a "world class" school does not truly mean what it did 10 years ago. Today being referenced as a "world class anything" is as much a challenge as it is a compliment.

That is our challenge as we head into the middle of the 2010's. We must insure our students are not only provided with an education that prepares them to be productive citizens of Indiana and the United States, but they must also be prepared to be productive global citizens. The world we live in is changing very quickly. That which only a few years ago was only reachable by planes, trains, or automobiles, can now be experienced and enjoyed with but a few key strokes. Technology has not only opened up the world to our students but it has created the demand for our LCSC students to be learners with global awareness.

In the months and years to come the critical learning experiences and opportunities will be focused on not only content learning but also on the application of what is being learned in a more global context. If our students are to be successful in whatever post-secondary path they choose, there is no question that having a solid understanding of the ever-changing world and how to work in those environments will be just as critical as reading, writing, and arithmetic. The staff at Lebanon Community Schools understands those learning challenges and is working hard to transform each and every learning experience into a multi-faceted experience for our children. From insuring a mastery of the curricular content to creating unique instructional experiences that allow each child to better understand the global influences that will be a daily part of their lives, we are working hard to prepare each student for the whatever the future will provide.

Lebanon Indiana is a wonderful place to live and raise a family, but the distance between here and there is being reduced almost every hour. Lebanon Community Schools is a committed to insuring our children are ready for what this world has to offer.

Trivia Answer - there are currently 21 different languages spoken in the homes of the students that attend Lebanon Schools. I don't think Hoosier is one of the languages.

With best regards,

Robert L. Taylor, Ed.D.

Mix It Up

On Thursday, October 23 all Harney students participated in Mix It Up at Lunch Day for the second year in a row. Schools all over the country participate in the Mix It Up at Lunch Day campaign promoted by the national organization Teaching Tolerance. The idea behind Mix It Up is to challenge students to reach out to others by sharing lunch and conversation with someone they do not typically sit by or know well. The goal is for students to learn more about, understand, and appreciate the diversity around them. Although it is only one day, the hope is this activity will encourage students to step out of their comfort zones more often to get to know each other better.

Mix It Up at Lunch was a meaningful way to end a month long campaign of bully awareness and prevention at Harney. The feedback this year from both students and teachers was very positive, as it was last year. We look forward to doing more "mixing it up" in the future.

Honoring Veterans

What does Veterans Day mean? A time to honor American Veterans. That's exactly what Harney Elementary School did on Veterans Day. As the Veterans entered the school, they were greeted with pictures, poems, and a gym ready to honor them. Harney put together a program filled with Cub Scouts, history, music, and a reception. Harney students shared how thankful they are by singing "Thank You, Soldiers." Those in attendance were truly in awe at not only how beautifully it was sung, but how much respect came from the entire school. Veterans stood proud as a Salute to the Armed Forces was played. The program ended with a beautiful rendition of Taps played by Lebanon High School Junior Megan Elliot. Harney Elementary School did a truly amazing job at pulling together as a team to honor our American Veteran's.

STEM Club

At Hattie B. Stokes a group of high ability students began participating in STEM Club; an after school club that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math skills. There are 16 students from HBS participating in the club. Students are given a challenge to complete using limited supplies. They must plan, execute, and evaluate their project. Building the tallest tower using only aluminum foil, creating a contraption that does not allow an egg to break, and building a bridge out of toothpicks and marshmallows have been the challenges so far. Students are learning various problem solving and social skills while enhancing and applying their academic skills in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Our 3rd through 5th grade students will be presenting the musical, Jingle Bell Jukebox, on Wednesday, December 17th at 9:30 a.m. in the HBS cafeteria. This musical takes us back to the 1950's and some of the wonderful Christmas tunes from over the years.

Our KDG through 2nd grade students along with our Lifeskills students will present A Storybook Christmas on the same day, December 17th, at 2:00 pm in the HBS cafeteria. Please come out and enjoy the gift of children's voices this holiday season!

Third Grade Field Trips

The 3rd grade class took two field trips in October - Connor Prairie and Howard School. As you can see by the photo the third grade teachers - Miss Gilstrap, Miss Meyer, & Mr. Smith enjoyed the trip. They were the apple of someone's eye that day.

Miss Gilstrap's class took their photo outside the one room school house (Howard School) (Note one of our retired teachers is in the photo - Miss Kelley). All three 3rd grade classes enjoyed seeing what the "good old days" of school were like.

November Family Night

Hattie B. Stokes hosted their second Family Night of the 2014-15 school year. After telling Native American stories and playing her flute, Teresa Webb led students and parents in a Friendship Dance.

Cultural Awareness Educator, Teresa Webb spent the day at Hattie B. Stokes Elementary sharing her Native American culture with students. Through drums, flutes, and storytelling she taught our students about Respect, Tolerance, Responsibility, Manners, and Self Control.

LMS Students Dare to Design at Purdue University

Austin Wright and Caden Rule participated in the Dare to Design engineering workshop at Purdue. The engineering students led a small group of three to four students in the design process of a catapult. The students had a budget, had to purchase materials, design, and build a catapult. Each group tested their catapult in a competition of distance and accuracy. Affordability was also a criteria in the contest. Austin and Caden's group, which consisted of Austin, Caden, a girl from another school and their Purdue engineering student WON the distance contest and the overall competition. It was a fun day for them and a great learning experience.

Watch D.O.G.S.

Lebanon Middle School had their Kickoff Party for Watch D.O.G.S. The turnout was very good, with 115 fathers/father figures and students. We served pizza, breadsticks, cookies and drinks and handed out numerous raffle items donated by local businesses. Several Dads signed up and we are ready to begin this great new program! Stay tuned for more information and how to sign up online to be our next Watch D.O.G. If you have any questions or want to sign up now, contact Nurse Chrissy.

S.W.A.G. Team

The 8th grade S.W.A.G. Team has a set of standards to strive for each 9 weeks. For the first nine weeks, teachers were looking for students showing great Success. The Success winners are Heath Ernest, Amanda Lamay, Andrew Hawkins and Austin Orr. The next nine weeks we are looking to reward students for their Will Power. Next semester the remaining two awards will be for Attitude and Goal Setting.

Winners of this award will earn a "Swag tag." The Swag tag allows the student unlimited hallway passes, ability to go to the front of the lunch line and occasional lunch time treats. The recipient of this tag must have the tag on their person in order to use it's benefits and they can be revoked at any point.

LHS Skills for Living Students Gain Confidence

A group of LHS students stretched themselves in lots of ways this month at Crux, the rock wall at Camptown. Overcoming obstacles and building confidence are key components of this type of activity. Many students enjoyed the "Shark Attack" game, which called for them to climb the wall to avoid being "eaten" for remaining on the mat.

LHS Celebrates Veterans Day

On Tuesday, November 11, 2014, the LHS students, staff, and honored guests celebrated Veterans Day with a student lead program in the main gymnasium. Over 1000 students gave a standing ovation while waving miniature American flags as the veterans in attendance entered the gym. The LHS band played several pieces including the National Anthem, the Armed Forces Medley, and Taps. Makenzy Tibbot, a LHS junior, was excellent in her role as master of ceremony. She provided a history of Veterans Day, showed a student made video, and introduced LHS teacher, Ms. Molly Murphy. In turn, Ms. Murphy introduced the keynote speaker, Retired Lt. Col. Alex Murphy. It is no coincidence that their last names are the same as Lt. Col. Murphy is Ms. Murphy's younger brother. Lt. Col. Murphy gave a heartfelt and inspiring speech to the students. A special thank you goes out to the following individuals and groups for making this program possible: the LHS Social Studies Department, Lt. Col. Alex Murphy, Ms. Murphy, Mr. Gee, Mr. Thatcher, Mr. Conrad, Mr. Levine, Ms. Ruch, Mrs. Todderud, Mr. O'Rourke, Dr. Taylor, Mrs. Masic and all the LHS custodial staff, Makenzy Tibbot, Luke Wheat, Kyle Williams, Selmina Masic, Olivia Brooks, Reid Schaller, Mariah Allen, Gabrielle Northrup, Mitchell Baker, Courtney Maher, and a special thank you to Mr. Smock for all his organizational work putting the program together. Finally, LHS would like to thank the veterans that attended the program, because without the veterans the program would not have been nearly as impactful.

NEW SEATING POLICY FOR ALL HOME BASKETBALL GAMES

For the safety and security of all spectators at Lebanon High School home basketball games and to allow for everyone to view the games without distractions and disruptions, the following seating procedures are to be implemented beginning Wednesday, November 25th. All middle school students must be seated during LHS basketball games with an adult, their coach (on LMS nights) or in the assigned section of the bleachers. This assigned location will be in the upper bleachers behind the LHS student section. All Elementary Students must be seated in the stands with a supervising adult or a coach during special event (INDY HOOPS, IGBL) night. If an LMS or Elementary student is determined to be participating in any inappropriate behavior without adult supervision, they will be escorted back to their parents and, should the situation continue, they will be removed from the event. Students on their own purchasing items at the concession stand or using the restroom is permissible but they must return immediately to their assigned section or supervised adult. The LHS Administration thank you for your cooperation.
