Welcome Back to School!

Dr. Taylor

I hope you have had, albeit a short but relaxing summer with your families. This summer seemed to go by extremely fast. With the fond memories of graduation still fresh in mind, it is hard to believe our students will be walking back into our school buildings on August 7th.

The start of a new school year is truly a special time, for students, parents and faculty alike. A new school year brings so many exciting opportunities, from new schools for some, to new classrooms filled with new students; discovering new classmates that will soon become new friends; parents learning new routines and new schedules that will seem so confusing the first week and quickly become a "no brainer" the second week, and there is always the excitement of being one year older, one year wiser, and one year closer to graduating. Truly a new school year is an exciting time.

I am looking forward another great year at LCSC. I am looking forward to another great year for our students and I am truly looking forward to working with each student, parent and teacher to make this the best school year ever.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert L. Taylor

Studies of after-school gardening programs suggest that children who garden are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables, and are generally more inclined to adopt healthier lifestyles.

ARAMARK Education shares this philosophy and, as part of its mission to help students flourish, we are proud to introduce ACE's Gardens™. This year we would like to partner with Elementary School classrooms to introduce gardens. Each Growums Garden Kit comes with everything you need to start growing your own delicious vegetables and herbs. But your Growums experience doesn't end there. Before you start your seeds, be sure to register your garden here, then get ready for an interactive gardening adventure! Fun-loving Growums characters come to life in a series of animated videos that show you how to properly care for your plants, from planting the seeds to harvesting your food. (You'll even learn tips on what to do with your garden once it's finished for the season.) Your Growums friends will help you keep track of each stage of your garden's progress, so you won't get lost along the way. The more you log onto Growums.com, the more points you can earn to use later on the site. It's a fun and educational online experience like no other, and it's a wonderful way to grow a successful garden - one character at a time.

Community: Do I Have to Stop for That School Bus?

In Indiana, August brings hot weather, the State Fair and also the start of a new school year. Every school year the Indiana State Police receives numerous complaints about school bus stop arm violations from school corporations around the state. The Indiana Department of Education surveys school corporations annually for stop arm violations on one given day, and reports those numbers to the National Association of State Directors for Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS).

In 1999, there were 932 stop arm violations on one day in September. This year, on April 29th, there were 2,577 stop arm violations reported in the state. There are just over 16,000 school buses on the road in Indiana, and according to the yearly statistics, as the number of school buses on the road has increased, so has the number of school bus stop arm violations. The Indiana State Police would like to remind motorists of the Indiana law concerning school buses, flashing lights and stop arms.

Remember, when approaching a school bus, from any direction, which is stopped with its flashing red lights activated and its stop arm extended, motorists are required to STOP, even on multiple lane highways.

  • Motorists who are on a highway that is divided by a barrier or unimproved median are required to stop only if they are traveling the same direction as the school bus. If there is no unimproved median or barrier, then all lanes in all directions must stop.

When approaching a school bus always be prepared to stop and watch for stopped traffic.

Disregarding a school bus stop arm is a serious violation and one that school bus drivers are quick to report. Violation of this law is a Class "A" infraction and is punishable by a maximum fine of $10,000.

The Indiana State Police is committed to the safety of our children, motorists and highways, and will continue our enforcement and education efforts to ensure that safety. To learn more about national stop arm violation statistics you may access the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services web site here.
