High School
Dear (Contact First Name),

Dr. Taylor

School starts back up in just 6 short weeks, students will be returning to school on August 7th. It will not be long before many of the local stores will be replacing the red, white, and blue of July 4th celebrations with the Black and Gold of Lebanon school supplies. In a matter of a few weeks, we begin a new school year.

Before you head out to purchase those school supplies or buy the latest "have to have" outfits, I would recommend you do a couple of things to make some summer memories that will last through the cold winter.

I would make time to have a picnic lunch under the shade trees in Memorial Park. I would take my soon to be Senior out for ice cream at one of Lebanon's many ice cream shops and ask the questions "What are you looking forward to in your last year of high school?" and "What are you a little nervous about during your last year of high school?". I would take everybody to the Indianapolis Zoo for an afternoon and before you come home everyone has to spell "Orangutan" before they get back in the car. I would take your children for an afternoon at the new Lebanon Aquatic Park (the ole swimming hole with slides). I would make a pitcher of sun tea, and then drink it as you sit outside (on a blanket not in chairs) under the stars and make wishes. I would go buy a new Frisbee and challenge your children to a game of Frisbee golf at the south side park. I would recommend you take your children to the Lebanon library and pick out a book to read. I would take the children and pick out a great place to watch the 4th of July parade and when the flag passes by make sure everyone stands and pays their respects to our country. I would... enjoy your summer.

We will see everyone in 6 short weeks.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert L. Taylor

THIRST PROJECT
This is the second year in a row that our students have raised enough money to build a freshwater well in an underprivileged community in Uganda. This year, we presented a check to The Thirst Project for $7800. Last year, the amount to build the well was $7500, so over the past two years, our students have donated $15,300 to build two freshwater wells in Uganda. We are very proud of the global difference that our students are making. They are literally eliminating disease from contaminated water and saving lives of men, women, and children in these communities.

FOUR STAR LEBANON HIGH SCHOOL RANKS AMONG STATES BEST SCHOOLS

The Indiana Department of Education has notified the Lebanon High School Administration for, what they say, is a computer error that left the high school off the list of Indiana Four Star High Schools. "We knew our student performance data was very good related to the metrics used to determine Indiana's Four Star high schools, so when IDOE stepped up and reported the error we were both grateful and proud", said Lebanon Principal Kevin O'Rourke. "This is a prestigious award, and to receive it two years in a row is an outstanding accomplishment and tribute to our students, staff, and community".

IDOE says only a few high schools were impacted by its error which had to do with the script used for Algebra scores. Lebanon administrators say it's common for students to take the test more than once prior to the end of their 10th grade year. It appears the script did not include all re-testers that passed it by the cut off time. "While we do not work for awards, we do work for our students, colleagues, and the Lebanon community", said Superintendent, Dr. Robert Taylor. "This is a great validation that the work we are doing ranks us with the top high schools in the state of Indiana", says Taylor.

Principal O'Rourke sent a letter to the high school staff thanking them for performing at a high level. He thanked the English and Math departments who work hard to ensure students get an exemplary standards-based instruction as evidenced by their performance on the Algebra I and English 10 ECA's, which are critical factors in the four star calculation. He also thanked teachers for fostering a school-wide environment that allows all students to learn, think critically, and grow in every course at LHS. Dr. Taylor, who is also President of the state's school superintendent's association, stated this is part of the unintended consequences when the IDOE fails to provide accurate information about its schools, "It's a real disappointment that a school recognized by U.S. News & World Report on their Best High Schools list and also an IDOE "A" grade school doesn't make it on the states Four Star list only to find out it happened because of a clerical error".

Below are links to the past two year's lists of Four Star Schools. Lebanon High School is now included on the past two years Four Star School Awards lists.

LHS BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

The LHS Back to School Night is being held prior to the start of the school year this year in order to provide an informative event for our parents and students that can serve as a "one-stop shop". This event allows students a chance to meet their teachers prior to the start of school and also have the opportunity to visit their lockers and find out where classrooms are located. In addition, we are hoping to provide more of an "open house" type of atmosphere that allows parents to visit with teachers at their own pace rather than on a schedule. We hope that the changes made to this year's event will provide you with a worthwhile experience.

LHS BASEBALL TEAM CAPTURES CONFERENCE AND SECTIONAL TITLE AND SOFTBALL TEAM REPEATS AS CONFERENCE, SECTIONAL AND REGIONAL CHAMPIONS!

The #2 state ranked Lebanon Tigers Baseball Team captured their first Sagamore Conference Championship since 2005 and Sectional Championship since 2000. The Tigers defeated Crawfordsville two times to capture the Conference Title and a third time along with the Frankfort Hot Dogs (12 - 4) to capture the Sectional Title. The Sectional Championship game produced a complete team effort but a trio of three sophomores were instrumental in the big win. The battery of Reid Schaller and Bryce Shearer along with DH Caleb Myers set the tone throughout the game. Schaller got the win, going six strong. He gave up the four runs, none earned, on four hits and two walks. He struck out seven. Senior Jackson Bennett pitched the 7th, retiring the side on a strikeout and a sparkling double-play started by shortstop Isaac Harker. The Tigers faced a very good New Palestine team in the first round of Regional competition but came up a little short falling 6-4. The Tigers have a lot to be proud of and thankful for, finishing the season with an over record of 25-4 and capturing a Sagamore Conference and Sectional Title. Congratulations to Head Coach Rick Cosgray his staff and all the players.

Once again the Lady Tigers Softball Team went undefeated in Sagamore Conference play capturing their 5th consecutive Conference Title. For the fourth time in a row they won the Sectional Title. Senior Ashlyn Montgomery powered the Lebanon Tigers at the plate and on the rubber willing the Lebanon Tigers Varsity to a 9-3 victory over Indianapolis Bishop Chatard to capture a 3-Peat Regional Title. Ashlyn put herself in scoring position with three extra-base hits for the Lebanon Tigers. She doubled in the first and third innings. Ashlyn kept contact to a minimum, striking out nine Indianapolis Bishop Chatard batters. Ashlyn allowed three earned runs on three hits and one walk over seven innings. The Lebanon Tigers bats came to life in the third inning. In the inning the Lebanon Tigers scored eight runs. The Lebanon Tigers were sparked by Makayla Copeland and Ashlyn, who teamed up for five hits and two RBIs. The Lady Tigers complied an undefeated 26-0 record heading in to Semi-State Tournament play. Unfortunately, the Tigers fell in a heart breaker 2-1 to West Vigo in first round action of Semi-State play however, they cannot overlook an outstanding season. The Lady Tigers finished with an overall record of 26-1 and congratulations to Head Coach Steve Smith, his staff and all the players.

Special best wishes to the Baseball and Softball seniors Jackson Bennett, Coty Edwards, Brantley Fortner, Isaac Harker, Mitch Lockhart, Colton Ranney, Nick Starkey, Lexy Britt, Carly Greene, Riley Jones, Cheyenne Marshall, Ashlyn Montgomery and Manager Marley Jones. Thanks for the memories and remember once a Tiger always a Tiger!

AVID GRADUATION CEREMONY

On May 27, the AVID 12 students, parents, and guests gathered in Community Room 2 to celebrate their completing the AVID System and their upcoming graduation from LHS. Many of these students have been together since 7th grade in the AVID class learning about post-secondary options and opportunities, researching careers, becoming organized in their note taking, learning what is expected of them as a post-secondary student, and learning strategies to help them be successful in post-secondary classrooms and to complete their educations at this next level. We congratulate these 16 AVID young adults and wish them the best this Fall as they each head to campuses around the state of Indiana.

Flash Mob to Happy

On our last day with students, Over 40 staff, 30 Volunteers, 535 students did a Flash Mob to Happy. We have used the chance during brain breaks, in PE, at Home via FaceBook to share a choreographer link to teach everyone the dance (April and May). This is just a snippet - and yes those orange sneakers are Dr. Yonts Happy Feet. We had cars pull over, the preacher come out to watch. What a success and a fun way to promote exercise on our field day. We are sure that our students will remember this experience.

Turn up your sound and enjoy a few seconds of Kdg. - Grade 5 students get Happy!
