Harney Elementary
Greetings!

Dr. TaylorAs we near the end of the 2013-14 school year, many of our students will complete some type of summative assessments and/or exams which are commonly referred to as "high stakes testing". Many students will also participate in predictive assessments such as NWEA and DRA that will help teachers better focus on specific areas of need for each student. Over all during the month of May in Lebanon Community Schools there is not one single day that some type of assessment exam will not be administered. From May 1st to May 28th our testing window is open. Not every student will be involved in a test on every single day, but from the ISTEP+ exams that all 3rd through 8th graders are mandated to take to the End of Course Assessments (ECA) in Algebra I, Biology I and English Language Arts 10 almost every LCSC student will "take the test" at some point during the month of May. In addition to the state mandated tests we will also be administering the old fashion final exams in many secondary subjects as well as the extremely important AP course exams and the dual credit course exams. From the kindergarten classroom to the AP Calculus AB & BC course, testing will be taking place.

While I am gazing at the color coded calendar that graphically displays the dates and types of test that will be administered during the upcoming weeks, and I think about the hours upon hours of planning and coordination that has gone into the scheduling of over 23 different exams, not to mention the preparation and coaching that our students are put through, I am reminded of a very wise old farmer who told me "you don't get bacon from constantly weighing the pig!". Now as a man that would place his love of bacon right up there with his belief the most important fruits and vegetables during the summer are lettuce and tomato I can relate to that wise commentary. It should be pointed out since my middle name is Lynn, I was almost predestined from birth to have a strong affinity to BLT's.

Indeed at first glance it seems obvious we have taken student assessment and end of school testing to an almost insane level. It would seem that we have lost sight of what is teaching and learning and what is assessment and data collection. Upon a closer and less critical examination of the examinations, (somewhere my 10th grade English teacher is shaking her head in disbelief at my writing skills) those exams that are going to be given in the coming weeks, are indeed necessary and important. The data that will be gathered from all of these assessments, will serve a number of valuable purposes. The scores will validate the hard work that so many of our students have given all year, allowing our teachers to better understand a student's learning needs in a very specific and focused manner and define the success or areas of need in our schools and our corporation or provide guidance on the areas that still need some extra effort. It will even prepare our children to deal with "life's full schedule" in the years to come. Is there too much testing? Maybe... Is there value in the testing schedule? Without a doubt!

We have confidence in our staff and students that the end results will be positive for all! I would ask each of you help us to insure our students are ready to do their best. Make sure your children get extra sleep, remind them this is indeed an important process, be a good listener, and most importantly let them know you are there to support them. Be sure to check the district or your school's website as well as contact your child's teachers for important reminders, dates and times of upcoming exams, study tips and information. We truly appreciate your efforts to insure your children come to school well rested, well nourished and well supported.

Thank you,

Dr. Robert Lynn Taylor

Harney Cardinal Harney 5th Graders Workout with Super Bowl Champion

Harney 5th graders had the opportunity to work out with former Super Bowl Champion Mike Prior. Mr. Prior was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1985, played for the Indianapolis Colts from 1987-1992 and then went on to become a part of the Super Bowl Champions Green Bay Packers from 1993-1998.

Coach Prior worked the students out for 50 minutes doing a variety of exercises to increase muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance and also the importance of stretching. This is all a part of the Fuel up to Play 60 commitment to health and fitness. The Indianapolis Colts are using this program to help combat childhood obesity in Indiana.

The theme of the event was PRIDE, with each letter relating to how you should live your life. (Personal Responsibility In Daily Effort). The students were able to see how PRIDE affected their workout with Coach Prior. During the 50 minute workout students used bands in a variety of ways to work on muscular endurance, bands for muscular strength and jump ropes for cardio vascular endurance.

At the end of the workout Coach Prior spoke with the students about the importance of playing every day for 60 minutes. He asked questions and rewarded students who answered the questions correctly. One special question asked was rewarded with a signed Indianapolis Colts football.

One student, Summer Stogsdill had this to say about the workout with Coach Prior, "It was fun and challenging at the same time." Working with the dumbbells were something new to Summer and learning how to use them  helped her to work out with her mom.

FIELD DAY

Field Day for 2014 at Harney Elementary will have a different look. Team Captains from fifth grade will be leading the teams all day long. The Captains were chosen after the third nine weeks with recommendations by teachers and by Mrs. Hammel. Being chosen a Captain comes a great responsibility; being a leader every day and setting an example by modeling great citizenship skills.

Each Wednesday morning the Captains meet with Mrs. Hammel and Dr. Yonts to work on leadership skills that will help them not only on field day but throughout life. Through a variety of activities, the students will learn how to: think about choices before they make them, plan ahead, get along with others and use their strengths and talents to solve problems. While learning how to be a better leader, the Captains have done role playing activities such as, What If scenarios to help them prepare for situations that may arise during field day. Captains have also picked the theme and some of the games for Harney's Field Day 2014. All students will be creating their team tie-dye shirt in Art Class for our event.

To help with team building the Captains will meet with their teams and do activities that not only include field day events but also will have messages dealing with sportsmanship and bullying. Understanding what it takes to be a good teammate is also something they have been learning about.

This experience has shown the 28 Captains that just being a vocal leader doesn't always get the job done, being a good role model and a positive encourager goes a long way when working with their 18 teammates that are all different age, gender, personality, etc. It is also a time for the staff to interact with teams and to build the day around fun, learning, and teamwork.

Central Enjoys Visit from Chinese Acrobats

On Wednesday, April 2, the Bureau of Lectures sent their very talented Chinese Acrobats to perform for our Central students and staff. This year at Central our theme is "We are the World". We have been focusing on different cultures and countries. The Chinese Acrobats fit perfectly with our theme and stunned our audience for over 45 minutes with their acrobatic talent. The acrobats ranged in age from 15-17 years old and gave Central a fantastic show. The acrobats grabbed our attention by showing off their tumbling skills across our gym floor. They then balanced spinning plates, juggled spears and performed a tradition clay pot routine. Half-way through the show audience members were called up to practice flipping hats unto their heads. What seemed to be an easy task deemed a little challenging to our young Central Stars! However, the Chinese Acrobats completed the task with much ease!

I loved the hat trick! It was different and unique and something I could never do!      -Bryce Hood, 3rd Grade.

My favorite part was when they did the splits in midair! It was

cool.      -Jake Burns, 3rd Grade.

Perry-Worth D.A.R.E Graduation 2014

Congratulations to our students for their commitment to the D.A.R.E. program!

Students being appreciative of Deputy
Dunn's efforts in teaching the D.A.R.E. program.
