December 2013

Greetings!

Dr. Taylor

This is the time of year when we all start off with the best of intentions. New Year's resolutions allow us to begin the New Year with a clean slate full of hope and promise. Every New Year's resolution is made with the sincere intent to get better in whatever aspect of our lives that we believe we need to improve in. Each of us believe without question that every resolution that is made before the strike of midnight on December 31st is going to be a life changer and we will be better for making the changes. So as you go through that soul searching process of finding just the right New Year's resolutions to make in 2014, just keep a couple of simple thoughts in mind.

There are times when random acts of kindness speak louder than words, or when a genuine hug or handshake will warm the heart and soul better than an expensive sweater or coat; or better yet when a memory that will last a lifetime is made through a simple gesture of kindness. My New Year's wish to each and every member of the Lebanon Community School family is that your 2014 is filled with those times.

To each LCSC student I hope part of your New Year's resolution begins with "I will ...", "I will do my best in everything I attempt", "I will be respectful of my parents, family, and friends", "I will make the most of every opportunity I am given.", and "I will give more than I will take."

To each parent or family member of our LCSC students I hope that part of your New Year's resolution begins with "I will ...", "I will love my child every day!", "I will support my child, everyday!", "I will encourage my child everyday", " I will keep my child safe and secure.", "I will be the best parent I can be!"

To each LCSC staff member I hope that part of your New Year's resolution begins with "I will ...", "I will always value and respect my responsibilities as a teacher of young people.", "I will always care about my students", "I will always remember why I became a teacher", and "I will always make a positive difference in people's lives."

As for part of my New Year's resolutions, I will always value and appreciate the opportunities I have been given to be the Superintendent of Lebanon Community Schools. I will strive to insure that every day students, family members and staff members are reminded of how important they are and how much they are valued as members of the LCSC family. (I will also probably make the traditional resolution to lose a few pounds but we all know how that one turns out.)

To each and every one of you, Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert L. Taylor

WHO IS YOUR PERSONAL HERO?

The third grade students at Harney Elementary in the classrooms of Mrs. Davis, Miss McAfee, and Miss Wiersma, were asked to complete a home writing project in September. The title of their project was, " Who is your personal hero?". The due date... September 11th... a time for our nation to remember the heroes and bravery many years ago. Not only were students practicing their writing skills, but also how to research, and prepare for an oral presentation. The assignment asked students to write one detail about their hero on three index cards that was from their report. They were encouraged  to include the details in a logical order in their report. The kids ended their reports with a conclusion about why the person was their personal hero. Teachers used a rubric to assess their writing, speaking and listening skills. Many students wrote about their personal heroes as moms, dad, grandpas, brothers, uncles and pro football players. As the students presented, their pride in their heroes shined through as they spoke to their peers. Applause for Grade 3 students, as they all did a magnificent job with the assignment.

OWL PELLETS

If you don't know what an owl pellet is you should ask a 5th grader. Some of you might find the idea of digging through an owl pellet to be unsanitary. Never fear they have been sterilized, so they are safe to touch. Students in Mrs. Burpo's 5th grade class recently spent a Friday afternoon digging through the regurgitated, indigestible parts of an owl's prey. Through this activity students were able to infer what types of food the owl consumed by what they discovered. They were also able to transfer their knowledge of the predator/prey relationship to what was found it the pellets. What a fun way to culminate our ecosystems unit!

"Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree!

How Evergreen your Branches."

By Central Kindergarten Team:

Jennifer Harrison, Devin Raub, Kristen Rissler

In the midst of the cold weather, Christmas decorations and the falling snow, the Central Kindergarten Students were able to experience Dull's Tree Farm. We learned the process of tickling a tree, shedding the pines, and binding the tree in preparation for a new home. They enjoyed a bumpy ride through the field of trees gaining knowledge of the different types of pines, sizes of trees, how the trees receive haircuts, and lastly, enjoying the scenic view of over 1,200 trees. While listening to a story about a kind and caring Christmas tree, students were nestled by a fire in an old cabin surrounded by animals of the wild. They learned about the lifestyle of settlers who would hunt for food, cook over the fire, and live in a one-room house. As the trip came to an end, each child laughed as they slid quickly down a large slide from the top of the barn to the bottom covering them self in straw.

"Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree!

You brighten up the snowy ground."

Family Fun Night - The theme was Polar Express Night. Santa came with a few of his reindeer. We had over 494 students and parents attend. There were many different learning stations for the children. Everyone went home with a new book.

Kathleen Duckwall & Brenda Smith from Indiana Members Credit Union brought hats and scarves for our students who need them during this cold winter.

Shamrock, our therapy dog, visited Santa and was so good he got his picture taken!

"Around the World at Christmas Time" was the theme for our Christmas program. Each grade represented a different country. Mrs. Schoeff and staff did a wonderful job and the program was enjoyed by all.

Student Council had a candy cane tree to raise money for their "Angel Fund". Students could pay 50 cents to purchase a candy cane from the tree. Money raised will go to a charity voted on by the council.

To get everyone in the Christmas spirit this year we had a Secret Santa exchange that ended on our last day with a Staff Breakfast. In addition the staff was asked to decorate their door and the winner from each hallway was announced at the breakfast. Thursday , Dec 19th the staff celebrated "Ugly Christmas Sweater" day. The spirit was as bright as the smiles on all after this day.

Cupcake Club

The LHS Cupcake Club has been active this year serving several groups. We have baked cupcakes for the participants (Boone County Sheriff, Lebanon Police, Lebanon Fire, Witham ER) of our Every 15 minute program in Spring, 2013. We sold cupcakes at a football game raising money for Breast Cancer programs in Boone County, and last month the club baked cupcakes for the LHS Mentor program.

English 9

This year, Mrs. Coddington's English 9 classes once again wrote letters to Santa after studying the New York Sun's famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus." After expressing one wish for themselves, one wish for their families, and one wish for the world; the students letters are mailed to Macy's department store which makes a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Students largely wish for an end to violence while helping make other children's wishes come true.

Z Club Sponsors 16 Days of Activism Campaign

In conjunction with the Zonta Club of Boone County, Z Club of Lebanon High School sponsored a 16 Day campaign from November 25th through December 10th to increase awareness of gender violence against women in the world with a goal of eliminating it. Club members wore orange on November 25th and orange ribbons every day of the campaign. Ribbons were also distributed to students during lunches and a video made and shared that highlighted some of the more startling statistics related to violence against women from childhood through adulthood and in every part of the world. Watch the Lebanon Z Club video here.

A Busy Semester for the Culinary Arts Program

The Lebanon High School Culinary Arts Program, taught by Melanie Turner, has had an exciting semester. To start off the year, Mrs. Turner's Nutrition & Wellness welcomed the staff and students to their new room to participate in the 13th Annual Salsa Contest.

Continuing into Football Season, the Advanced Foods Classes had their 9th Annual Chili Cook-off where many students, parents, and fans enjoyed a pre-game delight of 20 different varieties of Chili.

Parent-Teacher Conferences just wouldn't be the same with out the talents of the Advanced Students and their presentation of a Beautiful Fall Buffet of amazing food for Parents and Teachers to enjoy.

Rounding out the semester, the Advanced students made a memorable community connection for the residents of Homewood Healthcare. The activity called "The Homewood Happy Cupcake Connection", delighted the residents with wonderfully decorated cupcakes made during their classroom study of cakes.
