November 2013
High School
Greetings!

Dr. Taylor

Mother Nature has started her annual changing of the seasons. From bright brisk sunny days to dark ominous twisting storm clouds, from trees alive with full color to the stark beauty of bare branches, the month of November in Indiana is the seasonal door to winter. November, more than any other month reminds me that change is always there to deal with, and take advantage of. Change will present new challenges, but can also produce new and exciting rewards. With that, November seems to be a natural place in the Lebanon Community Schools calendar to pause for a moment of reflection, contemplation, and appreciation. It is a good time to give thanks for the many blessings I encounter every day.

As the Superintendent of the Lebanon Community School Corporation, I am humbled by the dedicated staff members who work with our students each and every day. Whether they drive buses (over 10,910 miles a week), keep our facilities clean and operational, prepare and serve meals (over 21,125 per week) to our hungry students, manage our offices with efficiency, patience and a smile, or provide that extra effort to make each lesson a true learning experience, the LCSC family is a blessing in my professional life and the lives of our families.

Providing for our students would not be possible if we did not have the benefit of school buildings and support facilities that provide our students with a safe, modern, and pleasant learning environment. Looking at our beautiful facilities, I also believe the overwhelming generosity of a community that has invested into the education of our children is a blessing. At a time when a struggling economy and financial uncertainty may have compelled many to draw back, the Lebanon community chose to invest in our future generations and supported the referendum that has brought about so many wonderful additions to our schools. One cannot walk the halls of Lebanon High School and not feel that we are blessed as a community to have such a state of the art "school house". I can assure you everyone who attended the high school musical last week knows what a blessing it is for our students to be able to perform in such a beautifully renovated performing arts center.

On November 14th, the Lebanon Community Schools hosted two very significant events, which I would classify as blessings in disguise. In our attempts to insure that we continue to provide our Lebanon students with educational programming that is viable and relevant for our students and families, members of the LCSC School Board of Trustees and the high school administration hosted a luncheon that included leaders in the construction and manufacturing industries in Indiana, representatives from the Indiana legislation, members of state and local government, and college administration officers who came together to discuss promoting learning opportunities for students in the field of skill trades and craftsman. This innovative initiative is known as "Go Build Indiana" and to have over 40 state leaders in industry, education and government associate this program with Lebanon Community Schools is a recognition that places Lebanon schools and our community at the forefront of educational innovation and student service. Being able to host a meeting of this significance in our new community room allowed Lebanon to be viewed by all who attended as a progressive, forward thinking, student centered school system. All in attendance commented what a "blessing" it was for a community to have such outstanding facilities and such dedicated community members. Following that event the Lebanon High School Community Room was the site of a dedication ceremony that honored one of LHS's distinguished alumni, Herman B Wells. Dr. Wells was a 1920 graduate of LHS and went on to become the President of Indiana University and an internationally recognized educator. In partnership with the City of Lebanon, Indiana University, and the Boone County Indiana Alumni Association, LCSC organized a dedication ceremony that honored our Dr. Wells with the renaming of the community room, to be known as the Herman B Wells Community Room. With over 150 guests in attendance, along with representatives of Indiana University, and the Indiana Singing Hoosiers the dedication ceremony was another example of the blessings that we have at LCSC. Cooperation, community support, appreciation and community pride were all clearly visible throughout the proceedings and to have an activity of this significance take place in our school, was yes, truly a blessing. How does a simple dedication ceremony become a blessing? Well you might ask the students of the LHS choral department if the time they spent with the members of the Indiana University Singing Hoosiers was not a special opportunity for them. It was an opportunity that would not have been possible if we did not have a great facility or dedicated community members or a city government that supported ($500,000) the creation of the community room. In a time when citizens and government cannot agree on everything from insurance to education policy, we are blessed to have community support that is focused on doing what is best for our students.

Before we all break our promise to not over eat when we sit down for our Thanksgiving feast, or before we loosen our belts just a couple of extra notches, or right before we all doze off for that well earned Thanksgiving day nap, I hope you will each join me for a moment of silent prayer and offer our thanks for the many blessings we have in Lebanon. This year, I'll also be including my thanks for the outstanding LCSC staff who understand and embrace the tremendous responsibility we have as educators and for a selfless community of parents, grandparents, and supporters who join us in this journey to prepare our children for the future. Thanks for making Lebanon Community Schools a great place to work and to learn - It is a blessing in all our lives. Happy Holidays to all.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert L. Taylor

FAMILY FUN NIGHT

Coyote Chris from Silly Safari educated and entertained the students during the day and then again at our Family Fun Night. This event was attended by over 400 people. WOW!!! Guess the HBS crowd isn't afraid of spiders and SNAKES!!! This was an awesome event that entwined fun, facts & learning to all.

FIFTH GRADE VOCABULARY PARADE

The fifth grade classes had a vocabulary parade based on the book: "Miss Alaineus, A Vocabulary Disaster". Parents were invited to attend this vibrant & vivid production. It was quite a performance and was enjoyed by all. Students were most enthusiastic about this learning experience.

SOUTHSIDE OF LEBANON HIT BY TORNADO

The title may not be good news but the day ended on a good note. HBS opened our doors to anyone that needed shelter. We are pleased to report that no one needed it. Family and friends helped each other with shelter. The community worked together to help clean up. Fortunately no one was seriously injured. The good news - we made national news - the downside - Starbucks was closed.

FOOD PANTRY

We are blessed by our staff, colleagues, and community members. Our staff let it be known that we were in need at the food pantry. First Baptist Church and Harney Elementary were kind enough to donate money to our cause. This kind act has helped make the coming Holiday more welcoming to our families. THANK YOU!

Harney's Mix It Up at Lunch Day

On Friday, October 25, Harney students participated in their first Mix It Up at Lunch Day. Mix It Up at Lunch is a national campaign launched by the organization Teaching Tolerance. The goal of Mix It Up at Lunch is to encourage students to reach across social boundaries and connect with peers they may not typically sit down and talk with on their own. Surveys administered by Teaching Tolerance have shown the cafeteria to be a place where divisions between students can occur easily. Therefore, Mix It Up at Lunch asks students to step out of their comfort zone and sit down with people they don't usually share a table with during lunch. Harney teachers felt participating in Mix It Up at Lunch was a meaningful way to end a month long campaign of bully awareness and prevention. We believe the more students take the time to know one another, the more compassionate and understanding they will be about their differences and come to find they often share many of the same interests, ideas, accomplishments, and struggles.

The feedback received from both teachers in their observations of students interacting during the first Harney Mix It Up at Lunch day, and from the students was very positive. We look forward to doing more of these this year!
