Greetings!

Dr. Taylor

How quickly a school year passes and summer vacation begins. I hope this means more time to spend as a family enjoying the summer months. The end of the school year does not have to mean the end of student learning. Summer time offers a number of great opportunities for families to continue learning beyond the classroom.

It is important for parents to keep in mind that learning should not cease because there is no ongoing formal instruction during this time. Research indicates that students can regress academically when their minds are not actively engaged for an extended period of time. It is especially important to keep students reading during this time in order to continue developing those skills. Research also shows it is not particularly important what a child reads as long as it is material that is appropriate for their age. Summer should be a time when children can read for fun and entertainment as opposed to required reading. Proficient readers realize much more success academically throughout the course of their education than those who are not good readers. I would challenge each student and parent to read a minimum of 10 books over the summer. Fiction, non-fiction, mystery, comedy, biography, historical, a learning "how to" book, skills development, even a comic book are all categories of books that can be entertaining and educational. I would also challenge each family to not spend a dime on any of these books. Take advantage of our local public library. It is the best deal in town.

To supplement your summer reading program, I would also suggest that each family try and take advantage of the many, many public learning opportunities that exist here in Indiana. Take a summer field trip. Go hiking at Eagle Creek Park, visit the Sugar Creek Art Center in Thorntown, spend a day at Connor Prairie, take a family walk to the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument located on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. While you are downtown visit the Indiana State Museum, or stop by the Indiana State House and see where our state government operates. If you want to take a nice day trip you might travel down to our first state capital in Corydon, IN or pick one of several wonderful state parks. There are almost an unlimited number of family adventure opportunities that would be both educationally enriching and just plain fun.

I wish everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.

With warmest (Hoosier Summer) regards and appreciation,

With best wishes,

Dr. Robert L. Taylor

Perry-Worth DARE Graduation

Perry-Worth DARE Graduation 1

Perry-Worth Elementary 5th graders graduated from the DARE program on Thursday, May 16th. The fifth grade students participated once a week for 10 weeks in an educational program. Those who successfully completed the course requirements participated in the graduation ceremony and celebration. The topics for the program included; Bullying, Internet Safety, Prescription Drug Abuse, Making Safe and Responsible Choices, and How to Say No to Drugs and Alcohol. The DARE officers worked hard to build a rapport between law enforcement and students because they want students to feel comfortable going to them with questions and/or problems they may encounter.

For students to graduate from the program they had to complete several assignments to demonstrate their understanding. Such assignments included writing an essay about staying drug free and completing a license plate drawing that stated something positive about them as an individual. The essays are read aloud in front of peers, hoping to make a lasting impression.

Parents, school staff, police officers and the Boone County Sheriff were all invited to attend the graduation ceremony. Students received a diploma and celebrated with a pizza party and graduation cake. As an exciting event to end the year, the Boone County Sheriff's Department brought their K-9 unit and military tank to demonstrate to the students other responsibilities within their office.

Field Day Fun for Central Elementary

Central Field Day

Central Elementary students participated in the annual field day festivities on Thursday, May 23rd. The students described the day as "Super, wonderful, awesome, spectacular, soaking wet, really fun." Fifth grade students acted as team leaders, guiding younger students through the day's activities and the 18 different rotating stations. The students had fun participating in relay races, tag games, the parachute, limbo, jumping for distance, and of course, their favorite water activities.

After lunch, there was a water balloon toss followed by popsicles for everyone. Central had approximately 50 parents volunteer to help run stations, pass out water, and assist with the water balloon toss and popsicles.

The teachers even thrilled the crowd with their annual kickball game against the fifth grade class. This year the teachers came out as the winners beating the fifth graders in the annual competition. A big THANK YOU goes out to all of our parent volunteers and PTO members for helping make this event successful. We could not have field day without them. Field day was a great day for the whole school to come together and enjoy time with classmates and teachers to celebrate a year of hard work.
