One To One About To Go Online At LHS
Greetings!
Preparing students for their future success is driving it. The work world is demanding it and now Indiana's Public Schools are responding to the essential productivity requirements all students will need to be competitive and productive in a 21st century society. Just as there was a time when public education moved from the one room school house to more appropriate schools, defined by specific age appropriate grades, or the change from slate boards to typewriters, or even the introduction of calculators, public schools have always tried to provide students with the tools and learning programs that would have the greatest benefit in preparing them for the future. The inevitable demand for equitable availability and access to technology for students has facilitated the implementation of "1 to 1" technology programs in schools throughout the country. Lebanon High School will be implementing a 1 to 1 computer program starting in August of 2013. The program, which has been in the review and planning stages for over two and half years, will put a Mac Book Air laptop computer in the hands of each and every Lebanon High School student for the duration of their high school experience.
The computers will serve as a valuable resource and a learning tool that will allow students to be engaged in learning activities, and teachers to teach at levels that are just not possible with outdated text books, maps there are older than some countries, and instructional resources that are not multi-dimensional approaches to teaching. The 1 to 1 computer initiative will allow students and staff to have access to unlimited resources and learning programs. The primary learning platform will be MY BIG CAMPUS which is similar to Blackboard and Moodle. Students will have their computer 24/7 for four years and will have access to all current classroom discussions as the information runs through the corporation server and security network.
There are two informational meetings scheduled for all students and parents. The meeting dates and times will be May 9th and 15th at 6:30 PM. The meetings will be held in the LHS Auditorium. During the meetings a number of items will be presented: information on the Mac Book Air and it's accessories, the expectations for student and staff use, the transition plan from textbooks to digital content, the technology fees and what they will replace on the textbook fee chart, how the computers will be distributed to students, a discussion on digital ethics and both student and parental responsibilities, safety measures, and dealing with security, damage, repairs and insurance. Also beginning on Monday April 29th there will be more information on the LCSC website as well as a section of Frequently Asked Questions that will provide more in depth information and explanation. As always I would encourage any interested individual(s) to also contact the LHS administration for any additional information.
I understand that changes in educational practice of this magnitude can be the cause for questions and concerns from parents and community members but I can assure you we will address all of those questions and issues to the best of our abilities. As with any new program or initiative there will be some disruptions, minor inconveniences, and unexpected glitches, but the potential benefits this new technology initiative will provide to our children are clearly unlimited. Our students have been and will continue to be my first priority as Superintendent, and I sincerely believe this 1 to 1 computer instructional resource program, is not only essential in supporting the educational opportunities for our students, but this will have a significant impact on their lives now and in the future.
Sincerely,
Dr. Robert L. Taylor

Family Involvement Comes First at
Hattie B. Stokes Elementary
Bringing families into Hattie B. Stokes is a key goal we have every year. Learning together, parents and students on various things is something we want to instill throughout their youth. In having Family Fun Nights, teachers and staff at Hattie B. Stokes are able to teach students and parents different ways to learn and develop. We are able to focus on reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics. Staff members are able to develop stations for families to have fun while learning together.

In starting out our school year we begin with students and parents learning and being exposed to literacy. We gave out free books to every child and had various writing and reading stations set for the evening. Students were able to construct a tool kit for their home to hold various supplies to use with school work. We have also had a wonderful science night. Our science night generated a lot of interest in the upcoming science fair. Teachers ran a variety of stations focusing on experiments and explaining the scientific method to parents and students. Students were able to fill out their own science journal to take home and use as a baseline in a science project.
Our most recent Family Fun Night was a little less station structured and more interactive. Silly Safaris was able to come into our building and run an evening performance. Parents and students were able to see a unique variety of animals. Students and parents learned about the animals' characteristics, eating habits and environment. Students were educated on what they can do to protect different habitats and why it is important to animals.
Students learned how diseases can be spread and how their actions can affect the animals environment. The experience was brought to our families by the support of Boone County REMC. Boone County REMC funded the expense of Silly Safaris when they granted us a Boone County Round Up Grant this fall. The grant covered a Nature Day and our Family Fun Night. Students were able to attend during their daily special time a performance formed for their grade level. The Family Fun Night performance was a longer show that allowed them to bring their parents and siblings back to the school to enjoy without an admission fee. Parents and students were able to learn details about animals from the show. Smiles and hugs were seen throughout the event. Students were able to participate in the show, leaving with life long memories for them and their family members.
Family Fun Nights are evenings where Hattie B. Stokes can reach out and allow trust to be built with parents and students. They allow learning to be done in a positive way. The evenings bring smiles to adults and students. The evenings allow parents and teachers to unite on the path of the student's learning. So many times we all get caught up in the daily grind of lessons and homework, that enjoying learning together is a foreign concept. When Hattie B. Stokes has a Family Fun Night the discoveries made and the learning being done by child and adult will last a lifetime. It also helps when you offer raffle prizes and free food...

Parents Volunteer and Support Student Learning at Central Elementary

Central Elementary is fortunate to have amazing parent involvement. Central parents and families volunteer their time and become involved in the school to support student learning. This spring our families have been busy with many activities and learning opportunities. In March our Watch DOG program had their annual celebration. This celebration is a "thank you" to all the dads who volunteered their time to come in and spend a day at school helping out and being a positive influence on the Central students. The celebration this year was a chili supper for the dads and their children. The chili for the celebration was donated by Watch Dog Kyle Richards and his family owned Milky Way restaurant. The Central staff and families want to send out a huge thank you to all of the dads for supporting the Watch DOG program and positively impacting the students' lives. The Central school carnival was held in April which is a huge undertaking for the PTO to organize. The success of the event is due to the involvement and participation of parents and families. The carnival is one of the biggest events for the school. The Central staff, students, parents and community work together to make this a fun and exciting evening for all ages. April also brought the "Pinwheel Garden." If you drive up to Central you may notice the pinwheels around the flagpole. The students are showing their support for Childhood Abuse Prevention. The pinwheels represent "the carefree childhood for all youth." The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Boone County, a chartered Prevention Council of Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, is asking all schools to support their campaign. As part of the Central student activities, a coloring contest is being held with D.A.R.E. Officer Brad Bailey selecting winners from different age groups. If you drive by the Boone County Courthouse you will see the pinwheel display for The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Boone County. Contact 765-484-8410 if you would like information. |
Lebanon High School 2013 Baccalaureate
Graduating seniors and their families are invited to join the Boone County Ministerial Association and Lebanon High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes in celebration! Two years ago, Lebanon High School brought back the tradition of a Baccalaureate program to give graduating seniors an opportunity to come together in faith to celebrate the great accomplishment of high school graduation.
The baccalaureate ceremony originated at Oxford University in 1432, and continues to be a practiced by schools all over the nation. Baccalaureate is an inter-faith ceremony where students, families, teachers, and community members come together to give praise to God for the opportunity to learn and grow through education and to celebrate graduation through prayer and worship.
This event will take place on Thursday, May 30th at 7:00 pm in the Lebanon High School Community room.
Formal invitations will be mailed home to all high school seniors.
Any questions can be directed to Rachel Becker via email.

LHS Mentoring Program
Earlier this winter, high school mentors and their freshmen mentees participated in a team building activity where they needed to work together to get a golf ball to travel from one end of the mat to the other without it falling through holes.
Each week, students gather together to work on team building, study skills, and they participate in other activities that help them learn how to better communicate with each other and their teachers.
Mentors and mentees alike enjoy participating in the program, and see the benefits. Caleb Brannon, senior stated that the relationship he developed with his mentee has been fun. He said "it has been great to give a freshman student advice about how I would have done things differently if I had to do it again." He also commented " it was fun to see the freshmen change and start succeeding."
Ben Carlisle, a freshman, enjoys mentoring because "it gives him a place to go during student lab once a week." He has enjoyed getting to know his mentor, Garrett Goff, a senior.

Soon, the class of 2017 will be entering the halls at LHS, and the mentoring program will be there for them to help get them off to a great start. Interested junior and seniors who want to become a mentor next year can contact Ms. Dawn Terrill, Graduation Coach, at LHS, and 8th graders or parents interested in applying for a mentor can contact Ms. Terrill via email. Our LHS freshman mentoring program is available thanks to grants and donations. If you are interested in more information about donating to help this program, please contact us at 765-482-0400 x21820.

Dance-a-thon Makes a Splash, Surpassing Fundraising Goal
By Kate O'Rourke
A memorable night at LHS will make an eternal impact in an African community where a freshwater well will exponentially raise their life expectancy and standard of living. On Saturday, March 16, Lebanon's first annual Thirst Project Dance-a-thon raised more money than was expected. Students brought in approximately $3,500 in pledges, bringing the total to $7,373.50. This surpasses the group's goal to raise $6,000, allowing them to have a wider variety of communities from which they can choose to fund.
With fundraising complete, the LHS Thirst Project group moves on to the next phase. The group will review a list of profiled communities and select the one to receive this life-changing gift. "It is really difficult to pick just one community because you want to help them all, but when it comes down to it, you are helping a bunch of people get fresh water," said senior Allie Ball.
Once the location is determined and the well is built, The Thirst Project will make a documentary of the process, community reaction and what it means to them. Junior Kylin Schoeff said, "We are going to see the people we are helping. That is when it will really matter [to students] because we cannot fully understand [our impact] right now."
When students view the documentary together in the fall, it will be time to kick off next year's dance-a-thon. "Hopefully, this event will continue for years to come," said Ball.

LHS Reaches Highest Level Ever in Graduation Ranks
Lebanon High School has reached a level of student accomplishment never achieved before. LHS is reporting that in 2011-2012 95.4% of its seniors graduated. That's compared to a previous high of 92.8% the year before.
"That's an improvement of nearly 3% in just one year and it's a major milestone to rise above 95 percent graduation for the first time", says Principal Kevin O'Rourke. "Our students, faculty, parents and administration are to thank for helping us achieve this rank only accomplished by 18% of Indiana high schools.
The 2.6% increase puts Lebanon into the "top tier" of the state's high schools. LHS has been above the 90% level in graduation for the past four years.
"Our goal of course is to graduate 100% of our students but just to break the 95% mark and to be added to this elite group of schools is quite an honor and an accomplishment we're proud of", says Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor. "It demonstrates how we've changed the education landscape at Lebanon Community School Corporation with a mission to send all our students on to a post-secondary education experience."

The team of 7th graders: Julia Garrard, Josh Newman, George Piper, Kate Stanley, Nick Zamora and 6th graders: Caitlyn Milks, Rayanna Yount, Olin Leising competed in two teams. The first four students were the official team representing LMS. All students competed individually. The contest consisted of 3 rounds: a sprint round, a Target Round and a Team Round. Each had different formats for questions. The top 16 students competed after lunch one on one in a faceoff situation. Other regional sites compete on the same date and one week later. When all the regional scores are computed the best in the state compete at the State Contest at Purdue on March 9. LMS was one of top teams in the state and was invited to participate in the state contest. Only the official team members of Josh, Kate, George and Nick competed.
