AMADOR FLYFISHERS CLUB OUTING
2/13 - 2/15
Goodwin Lake is a wide place in the Stanislaus River defined up-lake by the Tulloch Dam to the northeast and Goodwin Dam to the southwest. The lake is long and narrow surrounded by private property with no public access points. Much of the edge of the lake is lined with tulle reeds broken up by flats, mostly choked with weeds growing up from the bottom. In most places the shore falls off rapidly to a depth of 15 to 30 feet.

Nine members of AFF descended on Goodwin starting Friday morning and fishing from tubes and boats most of the daylight hours, until noon on Sunday. Participants were Gary and Lynn Slade, Charlie and Catherine Moore, Dennis Larson, Ron Calvert, Don Mittelsteadt, Tillman Sherman, and Gary Swager.  A vacation rental, set up for fishing groups, provided access to the lake.

The two-bedroom, two-bath rental had room for all nine participants, allowing not only sleeping accommodations, but also plenty of room for socializing in the evenings. It features a fully stocked kitchen. Just bring your food and drink. When our group put together all the food and drink we brought, it looked like we could feed an army. By the time the weekend was over, we all were surprised at how much we had consumed!

The owner of the rental, Roy Gunter, joined us for Friday dinner. He stayed around Saturday giving a Goodwin Lake seminar in the morning, and fishing with us until Saturday afternoon. I heard he picked up two fish.

The lake is filled with big Rainbows. The water is cold year round and provides a great environment for the fish. The fish are wild, meaning the lake is not stocked, and they are quite energetic. It was not uncommon to be given an acrobatic show, which sometimes led to the fish throwing the fly! Catch and release is the rule.

With one bright spot, which we will get to in a minute, our group's numbers in the net were small. This is in contrast to the level of experience of most of the people who fished, and how hard they fished. All got at least one fish in the three days we were there. In fact, most got at least one or more fish every day with numerous additional bumps. Fish were caught casting and retrieving streamers, nymphs under and indicator, and trolling streamers.

Ron Calvert caught a couple of fish on Friday, but his Saturday was a blowout compared to the rest of us. Ron picked up 18 fish in a long and active day of fishing. He was in the right places at the right times, using the right technique with the right bugs! To demonstrate how fickle the fishing gods can be, on Sunday Ron didn't even get a bump!

Although fishing was tough for most of us, Goodwin Lake was a successful outing. The group of us got to share in each other's company and experiences in a beautiful setting with beautiful fish (pictures do not do them justice). Goodwin has big potential. We just need to learn more about how to tap into it.

SANTA CRUZ FLYFISHERS FISHOUT

2/27 - 3/01

An enthusiastic group of nine made the roughly three-hour journey to Goodwin Lake in the Sierra foothills. For three days, we fished this mile-and-a-half long impoundment of the Stanislaus River directly downstream from Tulloch Reservoir. Goodwin has no public access, effectively making it the private preserve of the dozen or so homeowners who live along its shores. One of these is Roy Gunter, our host and fishmaster, through whom participants in these fishouts were able to gain entrée to this water.

All but three members of the group had fished the lake before, and these veterans generously shared their recommendations on flies and techniques. The preferred method of attack was via float tube, either trolling or casting woolie buggers (or some variation) while working the drop-off corresponding to the original bed of the Stanislaus. All the fish caught were rainbows ranging in size from 8 to 21 inches, with a fair number in the upper range.

Bill Seaman and Elaine Cook operated as a tag team whose tubes were never far apart, and they seemed to be catching fish with great regularity. John Cook ventured out in one of the resident kayaks, initially just to tour the lake, but what he saw encouraged him to return the next day with a fly rod in hand to try his luck. George Boero and Rich Hughett mostly worked the upstream end of the lake, which they had almost entirely to themselves for much of the weekend, an amazing luxury given the quality of the fishery. Don Foskett and I spent most of our time toward the downstream end, where Don had great success even during the cold, steady rain that came down all Saturday morning.

Bob Monaco, who arrived early, and Roy Gunter, who arrived late, and who no doubt have the most Goodwin experience between them, were able to use it to great advantage, taking fish in both numbers and size.

My contribution was to demonstrate that, contrary to everything I had been told, it is quite possible to take Goodwin rainbows on dry flies. When a brief hatch of March Browns began mid-day on Friday, I was able to hook and land an 18-inch fish on a size 12 parachute-tie donated by Elaine. I was able to repeat the experience when the same hatch occurred on Saturday after the rains ended.

The consensus among the veterans seemed to be that this late February date was less productive than their previous visits, but everyone caught fish, and several people caught 5 to 10 fish per day. The canyon of the Stanislaus is spectacularly beautiful at this time of year, with cattle grazing the emerald-green slopes beneath colorful outcroppings of volcanic rock. We saw a great variety of bird life - everything from noisy flocks of turkeys, to honking Canada geese, to kingfishers and merganzers competing for the fish, to formations of Sandhill cranes in flight high above. The Club fishouts to Goodwin Lake give members the unique opportunity to enjoy quality fishing in a magnificent setting where - as was true on this trip - they are likely to be the only rods on the water all weekend.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
3/17 - 3/19
We feel so welcomed at this vacation property that feels more like a home away from home. Inside, it is well appointed with any kitchen gadget you may require during your stay, while outside there are numerous places to sit and enjoy a sunrise or sunset. The Gunters have done an outstanding job providing guests with fishing information and are readily accessible should any questions or problems arise.

Each morning we awoke rested for a new day of fishing and kayaking. My husband and I like to fish from the boat with the trolling motor and caught 13 beautiful trout and lost 1 in our two and a half days of being on the water. These fish have exceptional color and fight like beasts. Make sure you bring your camera as the reflections on the water are otherworldly down in this ravine lake, so much so that sometimes you forget you are fishing and then...BAM, fish on!

We love that it is a catch and release lake, making sure the next fisherman or woman has access to the special trout at Goodwin Lake. Most of all, we just love coming here to get away from it all. Cell service is limited, though Wi-Fi works like a champ and the TV keeps you connected with what's going on in the world.

We'll keep coming back to take advantage of the dichotomy between relaxation and stimulation that this property affords. Having stayed at this property multiple times, we can share that there is no off time to visit Goodwin. Each season brings something new for you to experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit once again! Thank you Daneen and Roy for providing guests with such a wonderful trip, beginning to end! We'll be back soon with our extended family!
