1/28 - 1/30 Perfect Getaway for Outdoor Recreation
|
Very private! Great fishing--the fish were literally jumping out of the water! Such beautiful scenery, unique waterfowl and other wildlife viewing (like the otter that greeted us by the Tulloch Dam).
Very accommodating boat options and safety gear (like pads for the boat and life vests). We enjoyed taking in the sunset while enjoying an evening beverage at the sitting area by the dock. We utilized the awesome gas grill both nights. Very comfortable bed with tons of extra blankets and pillows.
We have now joined the local fly fishing club to learn the skills necessary to come back and catch and release the monster trout of Goodwin Lake.
We will be back.

2/21 - 2/23 Beautiful Spot! Exceeded Our Expectations!
|
The home was well appointed and well equipped with literally everything we needed. The dock was perfect. A great spot to leave waders, boots and float tubes. The sandy launch ramp was an ideal spot for launching the kayaks.
We got real lucky with 70° weather in February, but regardless, the stay could not have been nicer. One of the neighbors was very sociable and checked in with us about fishing.
Thank you for the use of your home.

2/28 - 3/01 WELCOME RAIN AT GOLD COUNTRY CLUB FISHOUT
|
Our welcome rain hit us hard at Goodwin as I arrived Thursday, February 27th, and fished 3 days in all kinds of conditions, changes in temperature, wind speed and finicky "troutskis." When fish are not on the bite and laying down deep, if you have electronics, you see them deeper than you have line to fish down there, or you try other things in close to bushes and bulrush, fishing shallow with what I feel most confident, an indicator at set depths till you find fish. Moses once said 5,014 years ago: "Never leave fish to find fish." The 3 fish on Thursday on my own jig, which has always worked well at Eagle and Pyramid Lakes, still gets them at Goodwin. All 8 fish in two days were caught about 10' below an indicator moving slowly and letting the wind blow the indicator up close to dangerous snags. My first fish was one of the brightest red males I have ever seen at Goodwin. The second one was overfilling my stripping tray marked at a full 22". My new catch and release net was overwhelmed by this brute. The wild antics of these fish continue to impress me with one hooked on a full sinking line after pulling hard, then it rushed me and I had to work fast to catch up with the charge; then it turned hard and fast and the barbless slipped free. I remember the battles the most, even if I never touch the fish. One fish came halfway out of the water to show me its size before a beautiful 3-1/2 gainer set the hook free. Saturday I was with the Gold Country Fly Fishermen including the president of the club and 5 former presidents. I thoroughly enjoyed their company while fishing or celebrating in the evenings. We all learned about foul weather fishing which can be on fire sometimes and sometimes not.
If you stay and fish at Goodwin, there is a problem with 'where' fishermen relieve themselves. If you can see a homeowner's house, they can see you from across the lake. Older guys just cannot hold it very long and this may become a problem. My advice is to bring a good sealing 1/2 gallon container to use instead of the lake or drainage nearby. That may diffuse the neighbor sentiment, is a good practice, and a responsible habit. It is always a pleasure to fish at Goodwin. You never know what you might catch!

3/06 San Jose Fly Fishers Fishout
|
The San Jose Fly Fishing Club conducts many fish-outs each year for its members, and the Club is always on the lookout for new venues and areas to fish.
At Owner Roy Gunter's invitation, Lee and I arrived for a day of fishing and to survey the accommodations. First impressions are important and the beauty of the lake and surroundings impressed us. Before rigging our gear, Steve, our fishing companion and advisor for the day, gave us a walk-thru of the accommodations. Close to the lake a very neat, clean, and spacious home greeted us. It was well equipped and could easily accommodate 8 anglers. Parking for several vehicles would not be a problem.
Before actual fishing, Steve gave us a quick rundown of the lake's underwater topography and his recommendations for how to fish it. Anticipations ran high with Steve and Lee in float tubes and me in my pram. Almost immediately the value of my Fishing Buddy (sonar) proved itself showing the quickly changing depths of the water. A half stroke of the oars could quickly change the depth from 4 feet to 24 feet. Most of the fish I scoped were scattered up and down the face of the drop offs. Depth down the center varied from 30 to 50 feet, showed little structure, and was devoid of fish. Knowledge of the lake's structure meant the difference between success and failure.
Steve out fished Lee and me that day, but the anticipation of hooking one of the truly large trout kept us fishing hard. All the fish we did catch were fat, healthy, and strong. The fishery is in great shape. The Goodwin Lake facility offers a unique opportunity for a Club fish-out with its proximity to the Bay Area, excellent accommodations, and the possibility of landing a rainbow of a lifetime.

3/08 33" RAINBOW TROUT!!! NEW GOODWIN RECORD!!!
|
This monster blew away the old record and I have a photo to prove it!
It did not allow it to be measured when I put it in the tray, but the head and tail stuck way out of both ends of the tray. Best battle ever and my heart is still pounding hard.
I estimated 33" when I used my tape later to measure how it looked on my line stripping tray. I think she/he weighed over 10 lbs. Very, very fat.
Secret fly and location this time.

3/16 - 3/18 BOB MONACO'S FISHING REPORT
|
Arrived at Goodwin Sunday, 3/17, about 8 a.m. and met with the group from the Santa Cruz Fly Club. Reports from the group regarding fishing was a little slow. Air temperature was between 42 degrees in early a.m. to low 70's during the day, 52 degrees water temperature with light breeze in the afternoon (except for Monday afternoon and then it was a little more windy, no white caps or anything). The water flow was up to 550 CFS. Basically the conditions were perfect!
Sunday was slow for me too, trying all my "spots" and different flies. Behind the island down by the Spanish house was a hot spot for most; I hooked 3 back there, some really nice ones, floating a callibaetis. All 3 pulled loose and two broke off!! Fun, but couldn't land anything back there. The best fly patterns for me were small black nymph flies or small grey callibaetis under an indicator. I had trouble fishing close to Tulloch Dam because of the water flow. Ended up catching 2 and hooking up with about 5 on Sunday mostly stripping black flies. I have a black punk perch I tie that worked really well the rest of the week.
Tuesday a.m. I went up to Tulloch Dam with my anchor this time, anchored and caught a 20" at 9 a.m. on a black punk perch. I hooked 8 and caught 3 stripping nymphs, in the 18" to 20" range, then switched to indicator and saw bobber move 1/2 dozen times and landed 2 trout, 17" range with a small spit shot on top, then Steve's grey/brown jig, trailing a size 18 callibaetis. Caught fish on callibaetis; then minnow imitation fished everywhere down to Spanish house. Hooked or caught fish almost everywhere, except for back of island (after Sunday too much wind to float flies back there). Tuesday I did not indicator fish, just stripped my punk perch and hooked about 10 and landed 5 here and there around the lake. Nothing huge for me this time, but real quality fish in the 17" to 21" range; most were in spawning colors, but a couple were dime bright. Great trip . . .

3/28 - 3/30 KLEPPER TOURNAMENT |
The weather was changing and a big storm was coming. Fishing for the company guys would be challenging. We started as we arrived--unpacked the gear and got on the water. Half fly fishing and the other half lures.
We all fished the flats and edges. The lure guys also worked the center. Tough fishing, but nice day. We fished hard to crack the weekend code. Nothing for the guys on Friday. Me? Tough for me, only released three to 17". We went up and we fished down. The fish must have been getting ready for Saturday's storm. Tried different patterns, floating line, sinking line, and for the others, lures. Black wooly bug does it again, my favorite. Saturday's mini tournament for 8 company men was on, rain or shine. Started at 7:00 a.m. Half went up and half went down. Within a couple of hours, flies were not doing the trick. Neither were lures. Finally, a lure guy got a 17" fish taking the lead. His fish was beating the two fish I had already caught. The fishing was really slow. Everyone switched to lures, desperate times. I continued to work flies. Tried many patterns, black, olive, white wooly bugs, midges, copper johns, damsels and more. When I switched back to the black wooly bug, I would get a bump or hook up. Released four fish to 19", lost two. The lure guys picked up a fish for most, others got none. The storm was almost here. Rain was ten minutes away and you could see it coming. A couple of guys geared up to brave the downpours. The rest of us retreated to shelter. They trolled back and forth, catching a few fish in the rain. They released a 15" Kokanee. Nice. Sunday was the calm after the big storm. I fished for a couple of hours early for a couple of misses. I chose to go down river this morning. Saw fish, but they were not biting. Lure guys went up river. They saw lots of fish, and caught a lot too. Lures were the ticket today? They released a couple over 20". We all had a great time at your place. Fishing is always good. Catching isn't always, but nice to be on the water. Thanks again. We are planning another company fish out. The guys want to take the "Trout Master" title from me. Maybe next time?
Thanks for sharing your home and lake. David Klepper, Livermore, CA |
