HOT FISHING AT THE LAKE

7/07

What a day! Up at 5:00 a.m. and launched float tubes at 7:30 a.m. at Horseshoe Recreation area on the Stanislaus (15 min. from Goodwin). Caught a few rainbows, 17-1/2" was the best, then got run over by 8 rafts of 12 people each and at least 4 kayaks. Ruined the fishing. Out of the water by 12:00 noon at Orange Blossom Bridge. After a little rest, in the water at Goodwin at 3:15 p.m. It was 100 degrees in the shade, but very pleasant on the water. Caught and landed 7 rainbows before 5:15 p.m.

1 - 16"     1 - 18"     2 - 19"
1 - 20"     1 - 23"     1 - 24"*

(*Largest by weight fish that I have ever caught. A tremendous hog 9" to 10" belly to back.)

All trout caught with white crystal seal bugger except 20" on grey callibaetis.

7/08:

Another 100 degree day in the shade. Went out at 9:30 a.m. and out of the water by 12:30 p.m. Hooked 8 rainbows and landed 7.

2 - 12"     1 - 16"     1 - 17"
1 - 18"     1 - 19"     1 - 24"

All but 1 fish were caught on a #6 hook Coffey's sparkle minnow gold/white/black/green. One 12" fish was caught on the white #8 sparkle seal bugger that worked wonders on 7/07---go figure!

1ST ANNUAL GOODWIN FISHING DERBY

On Saturday, 7/14, some of the most successful Goodwin fishermen were invited back for head-to-head competition. Several of the 8 contestants warmed up Friday literally, since it was 93̊ and one fisherman caught over 30 rainbows.

Each contestant paid $100 for 3 days of fishing and put $20 into a pot for the longest trout with $100 for 1st place, $40 for second and $20 for third.

The tournament started at first light, with some, including yours truly, waiting for the fish to "wake up" around 9:00 a.m.  By 3:00 p.m. the fishing was hot at 95̊ and the water was not at 55̊.  At 7:00 p.m. the tournament ended with some diehards fishing until 8:00 p.m.

Mitch Matsumoto from the Mission Peak Club took first at 23-1/4", Cary Westbrook from the Mother Lode Club took second at 23", and yours truly split the 3rd place prize at 22-1/2" with Steve Rudzinski from the Santa Cruz Club. The gang landed over 60 rainbows including 14 that were 20" or longer.

Sunday, 7/15, should have been Saturday. I only fished from 8:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. landing 5 rainbows: a 25" (winner) along with a 22-1/2", 22", 21-1/4", 20" and a 19".

If there is enough interest among the Central California Fly Fishing Clubs, next year we will have several qualifying tournaments with the 8 best fishermen advancing to a tournament of champions in the fall.

"Roy, I want to thank you again for a very enjoyable weekend. The fishing was incredible and the barbeque was excellent. Though I tried very hard to win, it was actually the least important part of the tournament for me (guess I got caught up in the spirit of competition). The company was great. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks again."

RUDZINSKI REPORT

Goodwin continues to fish marvelously. The heat wave, days of 100 degrees, did not affect the great fishing.

My numbers did not compare to a fellow fisherman who attended the "derby" on July 14. (Mitch Matsumoto landed over 60 fish in 2-1/2 days). I had one-third of that number, but every fish a memorable experience in their power and leaping abilities---the larger the fish, the more tricks it can perform, alligator spins, charging the float tube, quick turns and leaps to throw the fly. I saw so many fish do just that to my fly with one fly landing in my lap today as my little finger caught the last few inches of my line I was gathering into my reel and it jumped at the perfect time to a snag around my finger. It popped out so hard that I was like an insect hitting your windshield at 70 MPH.

See picture in this Newsletter of the first Brown Trout I know of caught at Goodwin Lake, 22-1/2", on Derby day (7/14) that Roy set up by invitation. My father caught a brown in NY State that when he got home after only getting 9 fish for the day on a limit of 10 per day, he cleaned it in our sink and inside it had a fresh 7" trout it ate that day. He now had his limit of 10 for a personal record I think. I was four or five at the time. His was 24". The photo of the brown trout at Goodwin has some variations that are not the same as an Eastern German brown trout. I thought it was a colorful male rainbow until we looked at the photos later that night of the fishing derby.

'WONDERFUL VACATION"
STEVE AUCH FISHOUT

The Owner's have a hidden gem! My friends and I had an amazing time at the Goodwin Lake house. The house is perfect for relaxing as it is very comfortable and has everything needed for a relaxing getaway. The lake is gorgeous and the fishing is incredible. We didn't see or catch a fish under 18". The boat dock on the property is a great place to hang out and the boat and canoe made the trip even better. We also float tubed and being in the water as the sun goes down is amazing. I highly recommend the Goodwin House as it is even better than advertised and the owner's are extremely nice people and truly want you to have a great experience. We are already trying to plan our trip next year and may even try to work in two trips a year!

"GREAT FISHING"
DEB & MICK MICHELI

We won a two-night stay on Goodwin at the Feb. 2012 Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton. Although the temps were very hot, 100+ degrees, we had a fabulous time fishing and never caught anything under 17 inches, not to mention we were the only ones on the lake during our stay. Caught about 10 beautiful bruts and each one put up such a fight with lots of screaming reels. Used a copper john below an indicator with split shot 1 foot above the fly. We also missed and lost several more. Accommodations are comfortable and we are trying to get a group together to go back. Had a great time!

GUIDED TRIPS BY
YOSEMITE SIERRA FLY FISHING

If you are looking to expand on your Goodwin Lake Trip for another day of fishing, consider a guided trip with Yosemite Sierra Fly Fishing.  We are licensed guides and outfitters, and provide all of your fishing equipment including wading gear.

Our favorite waters to guide on are the Tuolumne Rivers located between the North Gate (Highway 120/Big Oak Flat Rd.) of Yosemite and Groveland.  They offer some of the most beautiful and scenic locations to fish in the nation.  It is wade fishing in relatively easy water for native rainbows, browns, and occasional brookies.

We also offer hike-in day trips to high country lakes in Yosemite National Park, typically for brook trout.  In the winter, we guide on tail water streams including the Tuolumne River below Lake Don Pedro, the Merced River, and the Stanislaus (just below Goodwin Lake).

We also provide guiding on Goodwin Lake!
