FIES becomes
PATHWAYS OF HOPE

Pathways of Hope - for 37 years we have served the community in an effort to end hunger and homelessness as Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Service, (FIES). We have a new name and a new logo. We are extremely proud of our Fullerton roots and our place in this community that has fostered our maturity and growth. Pathways of Hope reflects the increased reach and scope of our organization. This is not a change we made lightly, years of planning, research and community engagement have finally led the Board of Directors to approve this move. And while rebranding an organization that is the size and age of ours is a daunting endeavor, we are excited to be embarking into our organizational future under this new banner.

 Greetings!

Her name is Krystal. His name is Tony. Their son's name is Anthony. And if you attended our Angelo's and Vinci's dinner two weeks ago, you are now one of their cheerleaders praying  that this hard working family will make it out of the homeless system.

Because of your support, the Sandoval family, is one of many formerly homeless families who have benefited from your continued support. In fact, since 1986, 1,000 families have benefited from services at our New Vista Transitional Living Center for homeless families!!

Krystal, Tony and son, Anthony

Because of you, our fall fundraiser generated a net of $36,000 that will go toward serving the homeless. Many thanks to the 200 community members in attendance; to our table sponsors; to the businesses and board  who donated auction items; to our dinner committee; to our devoted staff; to McAulay Wallace; and especially to Cynthia Peck for 19 years of donating 200 dinners!!

As we move into the final few weeks of 2012, we continue to give thanks for your support and your advocacy for the homeless.

CLIENT SUCCESS STORY

Porsha and her two-year-old daughter were living in North Carolina and in hopes of finding better opportunities she moved out to California to live with her cousin about a year ago. Unfortunately it was not the best move and the cousin became violent after a dispute. Porsha and her daughter were kicked outand she found her way to Pathways of Hope and into our transitional shelter for families, New Vista. Porsha had not worked since 2010, focusing on her daughter and being a stay at home mother. She does have a high school diploma and she had already begun looking at her options and had started the Welfare to Work Program before coming to Pathways. Although Porsha has very few bills, she was only receiving cash aid which made it difficult to make it on her own. When Porsha entered New Vista her goal was to find permanent work and move into her own apartment.

Porsha has accomplished her goals and is now graduating from Pathways. After entering New Vista she quickly put her daughter into daycare and went to work job searching. After a lot of effort and patience, she was able to secure a full-time job as a security guard. The job required her to work the grave yard shift, but Porsha stayed committed to keeping her daughter as her number one priority and thus accepted these less than desirable work hours. Throughout her stay at New Vista she remained

committed to attending all the life skills classes and case management meetings to learn all that she could to better her situation. Porsha's calm and consistent attitude led her to establish a healthy lifestyle of living on a budget, setting long term goals, and making every life decision count. Her hard work earned her the ability to graduate from the program in a little over 4 months and move into a low-cost one bedroom apartment that she is confident she can afford on her own with her daughter. The staff at Pathways of Hope is celebrating the hard earned success of this determined hard working mother and her delightful daughter!

ANAHEIM INTERFAITH SHELTER
Volunteers from Altrusa
It has been a huge project to get the apartments at Anaheim Interfaith Shelter ready for families in need. We made significant progress in September because of the incredible volunteers who have so freely given of their time and talents. Despite the dirty jobs and the September heat, these volunteers never complained! We can't thank them enough.
  • The Unitarian Universalist Church, Fullerton adopted Apt. # 1. Members of their congregation cleaned, painted, lined shelves, replaced the toilet and supplied all the bedding, dining room chairs, kitchenware, and appliances that were needed.
  • A group of 26 Rockwell Automation employees volunteered and did an amazing amount of work! They trimmed trees, painted the wrought iron fence, cleaned apartments, lined shelves and painted.
  • Anaheim Altrusa members came on two different days and helped clean and stock two apartments.

We had a total of 57 volunteers who worked a total of 321 hours at our Anaheim Interfaith Shelter.

"Not only was this a great team building event for our office, but we got to see firsthand the great impact we could have on the community."
- Don Shoemaker, Rockwell Automation
This event really changed my perspective and made me realize that even one person can make a big difference."

SECOND-STEP PROGRAM

"The Opportunity to expand our emergency housing programs comes at a critical time in the history of Orange County," explained Maria Mazzenga Avellanda, Executive Director at Pathways of Hope. She continued, " There are thousands of homeless in the county, many of them families with children, and every day we receive multiple calls from families in need. We're excited and grateful to have the opportunity to partner with HomeAid to expand our shelter beds and help greater numbers of families."

Founded in 1989, HomeAid Orange County's purpose has been to build the doorways for Orange County's homeless, giving them the opportunity to move from benches to beds to self-sufficiency, allowing them to return to self-reliance, self support and independence. Through the strong support of Orange County's home building community and the community-at-large, more than 50,000 individuals have found the doorway they needed to begin their life anew in one of the HomeAid Orange County's 49 developments. Year after year, HomeAid remains a dedicated pathway to help end the despair of homelessness, and while the journey is a challenging one, the first steps toward self-sufficiency begin here and now."

"The interior [of the new Second Step Building] will contain eight units providing a total of 25 new shelter beds, ranging in size from studios to three-bedroom units, giving Pathways flexibility with the families they serve."
