Court Cutbacks Are Painfully Real

Los Angeles County Superior Court is the nation's largest trial court of general jurisdiction, but it is not immune to budgetary restraints. A major court consolidation plan is occurring between March and June 2013.

LA Superior Court
Central Civil Courthouse
The Court has announced that its ADR Department will stop accepting referrals as of March 11, 2013 and that the ADR Department will close altogether on June 28, 2013. Parties will be encouraged to use private mediation, but there will no longer be court-ordered arbitrations or mediations.

Effective March 18, 2013, all personal injury cases will be filed in the Central Courthouse and assigned shortly before trial to one of the few branch courts still open throughout the County.  Thus, there will be no  way to identify either the trial judge or the jury pool until the eve of trial.

These changes will not apply to complex cases venued in Civil Courthouse West ("CCW"), but other changes are coming both here and to other courthouses around California.  We will keep you posted.
