Message from the Co-Principals
Dear Lakeridge Family:
It is going to be another fine year at Lakeridge Middle School and in the entire Sumner School District. Everyone is ready for the teaching and learning process to begin. We will continue to place balanced emphasis on character development, leadership, and academics. Despite enjoying sunglasses during the past couple weeks of sunny weather, our vision remains crystal clear with the following components:
Emotionally Safe: We will enjoy about 180 6th graders, 210 7th graders, and 210 8th graders. We will continue with Hawk PRIDE and Rachel's Challenge as strong foundations for emotional safety. Kami Johnson and Mari Lysne are two of the very best counselors in the school business. They are prepared to meet the needs of our families. If you already have a need, give them a telephone call as they are back in the building and ready to support your family.
Socially Civil: Our ASB officers have been meeting with Dan Lysne, ASB advisor. Together, they completed days of training and planning for our school year. They are ready to implement age-appropriate opportunities for our student body. The Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) program will continue to provide special support to our 6th graders (see article below). They have also been meeting for training and strategies to support our new 6th graders.
Academically Productive: This school year we included about seven math intervention classes along with seven reading intervention classes. Students will be enrolled into one or both of these classes based upon their Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) scores. For some students, this will mean they will not be able to enroll in band, choir, leadership, or art. We understand and completely value our encore classes. However, when a child cannot read, write, or complete grade level mathematics, the learning deficit must be addressed.
The following information includes the details you need to know to plan for the next couple of weeks. We are once again confident it is going to be the best school year of your child's life!
As always, we are merely a telephone call or e-mail away.

- Pick up your child's schedule

- Update your telephone numbers (home, cell, work, and emergency), e-mail address, child's health information, etc.
The following items will be available for purchase:
ASB Card - This card is required for students planning to participate in sports, clubs, and other activities. It can be purchased at any time. The cost is $15.00
Hawk Planner - All students need to purchase a Hawk Planner. This handy tool allows for students to track assignments and projects. The cost is $5.00.
Lunch Tickets - A representative from Child Nutrition will be here so you can purchase your child's lunches in advance. This will allow your child to enter his or her personal code when going through the lunch line. You can go online and view a detailed list of what your child has been buying for lunch.
LMS PE Shorts and Shirt - All students enrolled in a physical education class need the Lakeridge PE uniform. If your child has PE second semester, you can purchase the uniform in January. Your child can use a previous year's uniform or purchase a new uniform. The cost for a shirt is $5.00 and the cost for shorts is $10.00.

ASB Fundraiser Card for Local Eating Establishments - This card is valid for repeated use at local locations that kids enjoy. Middle school kids are always hungry so this $10 card will provide you with a return on your investment many times over.
Cash is always welcome. Credit cards will work. Debit cards will not work. If you are writing checks for the above, bring two checks. Lunch ticket purchases are made payable to Sumner School District. Everything else is made payable to Lakeridge Middle School.

Beach Clothing
Everyone knows what to wear at the beach. There are times, however, when some folks forget what to wear at school. Remember, when you are shopping for clothing, that we are a school. Short shorts, tiny little skirts, and/or low cut tops are not appropriate. See-through mesh and underwear on display are not needed in our classrooms. Beer shirts are not needed for solving math problems. Pants and tops with holes and tears in private locations also need to be left at home. All the details are explained in our student handbook.

I will be back, along with my horn, to join the Root Beer Float Team soon." In the meantime, Alec Simmons will be our CSO. He recently completed his counseling certification and can hardly wait for school to begin!

Where Everybody Belongs (WEB)
We strive to have all of our students be successful and feel a part of our community. The WEB program is specifically designed to provide support to 6th grade students. Many of our returning 8th grade students completed two days of extensive training this summer and they will be here to welcome our new 6th grade Hawks. Our WEB students will be busy all year providing ongoing support and activities. Allison Sheldon and Jennifer Ireland are our WEB Coordinators.

|
Free Clothes and School Supplies
LMS has some resources to provide your student with a backpack, school supplies and clothes if in need. This is a confidential service. Please contact the school counselors, Mrs. Lysne or Mrs. Johnson for more information about this resource at 253-891-5111.

Attendance Secretary
Karla Rothermel is the secretary behind the desk and the voice on the telephone. You can save yourself, and your child, a lot of time by merely calling Ms. Rothermel when your child is absent. Her direct line is 253.891.5110. We suggest you take a moment and enter this telephone number into the speed dial option on your home and cell telephone.

Bus Passes and Early Parent Pick-up
If your child plans to ride a bus home with a friend, remind him or her to be certain to pick up a pass before school or during lunch. We do not write passes after school. We do this early in the day so we can be certain that parents are aware and the note is valid.
Make certain your child knows his or her bus number. Frequently parents drive their child to school and then, at 2:20 pm, the child does not know what bus number to catch home. Bus schedules are posted on the district Web site and are also available in our Front Office.
|
PTO Officers
Our PTO officers are the very best in the PTO business. Do not duck out of your child's life now that he or she is in middle school. Rather, go "underground" and support academics and social time from behind the scenes. You will always know what is going on before your child even has a clue! Imagine that...you will always be one step ahead.
- Laura Sweers President
- Rebecca Buckley Vice-President
- Adina Hester Secretary
- Rhonda Chamberlain Treasurer
Our PTO Officers and their helpers will be here at the Welcome Back to Lakeridge Day with spirit wear. Their items are available throughout the school year. Cash or check is accepted. Meetings begin at 7:00 .p.m on the second Thursday of every month. And if you are planning ahead...way ahead, mark your calendar for The Hawkshun on April 26, 2014!

Family Access
Our school offers a great resource for parents in the form of the Family Access feature of the Sumner School District Web site. Once logged on, you can view your child's grades and assignments. Student attendance can be checked, as well as any fines or fees that might have been accrued. You can even check what your child bought for lunch! Your login and password are the same as last year. Mrs. Guiberson, counseling secretary, is glad to help. Her direct number is 253.891.5111. |
Athletic/Activity Fees
Athletes will pay a $50.00 fee for each sport/activity in which they participate during each season. Students who qualify for reduced lunch will pay $25.00 per season and students who have free lunch fee will be waived. If students play three sports and fees are paid prior to October 1, there is a $125.00 annual fee, $60.00 reduced lunch fee.
|
Fall Sports and Athletic Physicals
The following sports are offered in the fall:
- Boys Baseball, Grades 7 and 8
- Girls Fastpitch, Grades 7 and 8
- Co-ed Track, Grades 6, 7 and 8
Please make every effort to get athletic physicals completed prior to the first day of practice. All students must be medically cleared before they are allowed to participate. Athletic physical forms are available in the office or on the Sumner School District Web site. Students must have a physical on file that is dated within one year.

Immunization Requirements
It is a good time to make sure your children meet the immunization requirements for the year ahead, and to know about changes in vaccine requirements and regulations. Children may be excluded from school if parents do not provide proof or required immunizations within the first 30 days of school. For more information about immunization requirements, call the District's Health Services Office at 253-891-6051 or the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department at 253-798-2987.
Washington state law requires all students attending public schools to be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, measles, mumps, hepatitis B, varicella and rubella before registering for school. Children may not attend school if parents do not provide proof of required immunizations by the first day of school. For more information about immunization requirements, call the District's Health Services Office at 253-891-6051 or the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department at 253-798-2987.
A licensed health care provider must sign the certificate of exemption for a parent or guardian to exempt their child from school and childcare immunization requirements. The signature verifies that the health care provider gave the parent or guardian information about the risks and benefits of immunization.
For more information, please visit the Washington State Department of Health.
