Dear Families:

Recently, I put forth a challenge to our school family to purposefully take time to honor and acknowledge those in our lives who make a positive difference, inspire us or do the little things to make us intentionally pause in our steps and cause us to smile. This challenge has caused me to be more purposeful in my own actions towards others.

My challenge to our school family was to pick one student, one colleague, one person in your life outside of school, and share how they make a positive difference in your life or day. The communication can be verbal, written and/or with a reinforcing action. It does not have to be mushy (for you non-mushy types) but it should be authentic. In a number of recent related studies, the result of this type of challenge has proven to energize both the provider and the recipient.

At this time of year I am also reminded the school year "marathon" is quickly approaching the sprint to the end, especially for our seniors. Parents, students and teachers are all reminded of deadlines regarding the multiple responsibilities and graduation requirements of our seniors. It is vital to us that we keep students and parents in the communication loop, especially those who are in borderline situations. Teachers and counselors will be in contact with parents informing them of any concerns, especially if their student is not passing. The timelines are extremely important and must be met. Please work with our teachers and counselors and communicate early if you are concerned.

Guidance Information

Make Appointments!

The Guidance Counselors want to encourage all students who are credit deficient to make appointments to see their counselor. This is the first step in the process to begin credit recovery and hopefully get students on track to graduate. Students can sign up to see their counselors using the white binder located next to the reception desk in the Guidance Office. Students see the following counselors: last names A-G, Jenifer Benedetti; last names H-O, David Sandberg; last names P-Z, Nicole Bortle. Also, please be on the lookout for summer school information in the next newsletter.

Senior Feedback Requested

If you are a graduate of the Class of 2013, please take a moment to provide our office with information on your future plans by completing this survey. This information will be shared at some events, such as Senior Awards Night, as well as in display format, such as on our bulletin board showing where members of the graduating class are going. Your participation in the survey is voluntary, and we appreciate it!

Air Force Information

Lieutenant Colonel Slominski invites students and parents to find out more about the Air Force Academy and Air Force ROTC opportunities. An informational session will be held on Thursday, May 2, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Buckley Library Meeting Room. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Lt. Col. Slominski at (360) 367- 6353.

April Theme:  Drug & Alcohol Awareness

As part of the April theme, the Guidance Office in partnership with Sharon Cleary, our Intervention Specialist, provided students with the opportunity to take the DUI challenge during their lunches during prom week. This activity involved taking a sobriety test with and without the DUI goggles on, as well as driving through the obstacle course on a golf cart (with a chaperone, of course). We also let students get a close up look at a wrecked car involved in a substance-related motor vehicle accident. The Guidance Office wishes to thank Chris Sullivan, Seattle Fire Department, for his assistance with the DUI challenge; and Jim Markley from Northwest Yamaha Golf Carts for loaning us the golf carts for the DUI challenge.

Let's Celebrate!

Drill Team

In March, the Bonney Lake/Sumner Drill Team took home the District championship in the Pom category at Kentwood High School. They also placed 2nd in Military and 5th in Dance. All 3 routines qualified them for State competition in Yakima. In addition, Katie Lasko completed a "3-peat" in the Drill Down. She took first place, three competitions in a row and is the District Champion in Drill Down. Six more team members placed in the top 30 and participated in the State Drill Down in Yakima. Those team members are: Makenna Taylor, Sarah Nadeau, Anna Wolz, Jacey Zitterich, Delaney Hauck and Elise Wilson.

In April, the BLS Drill Team traveled to sunny Southern California to compete in the USA Nationals Competition. The team walked away with TWO second place trophies! One trophy was for the team's Military routine, and one for the team's JV Pom routine.

Special Olympics

They did it again! Our students who participated in the 2013 Special Olympics individual basketball skills contest in Wenatchee, received medals; Evan Coffer - Bronze, Kailee Breiner - Silver, and Caitlin McCaul - Gold. Our Sumner School District Special Olympics basketball team beat Cheney and then Tahoma twice, to take home the Gold for a second year in a row.

The kids and coaches alike had a great time and a would like to express their thanks to the families, friends, and staff members who made the long trek over to Wenatchee to cheer everyone on and supported these athletes this past season. Thanks also to Kathy, our driver, and our peer coaches for helping the weekend run smoothly.

Art Winners

Our Sumner High School PSESD Regional Art Winners are:

  • Jessie Mulrine for her tempera painting "Coal" (Outstanding Achievement)
  • Skyar Runions for his mixed media painting "Family Portrait" (Board of Directors Honorable Mention Award)

Teachers were only allowed two entries a year and to have both place is a great honor. Please check out these students' art work on the PSESD 2013 art gallery.

FFA

Earlier this month the following students won their divisions at the State FFA Agriscience Fair and will have their write-ups sent to the National FFA Science Fair committee where they will be evaluated to select the top 15 in each area, in the nation. These students will be invited back in October to compete for the national title.

None of this would have been possible without the amazing support we receive from WSU.

Also, this past week at Pack Forest in Eatonville, the Sumner FFA Natural Resources Judging Team placed 2nd in the State behind a tough team from Stanwood.  Team members Shania Simons, Shellie Caviness, and Elise Chalcraft placed 5th, 6th, and 7th respectively on an individual basis.  Also on the team were Angel Magbanua and Celine Patrick.  The team was coached by Jessica Treich, Mr. Pile's Fall student teacher.  Good job Sparts and Jessica!
