Painterly Collage and Mixed Media
Collage artwork can contain just about anything - flat elements as well as dimesional objects. One of the engaging aspects of mixed media collage art is that the creative possibilities are endless - from paper and paint, to fabric and found objects, you can create a collage with just about anything your imagination dreams up. But making a collage isn't just about the end product, it's about what you discover along the way. The process of deciding on your concept, finding your materials, figuring out where to put each element, and exploring new ways of creating artistic designs, is in itself an exercise in hearing your artistic voice loud and clear. Some of the techniques you uncover may also help you with new insights into other areas of your art, strengthening your ideas through the process of creative discovery.

Whether you are working in an abstract manner or representationally, painting into and onto a collaged surface takes your design to an entirely new place. Some areas of the support will obviously get covered up by the paint, but other areas of color and pattern will peek thru, in the most unexpected places and areas. It is a mesmerizing process and thoroughly engaging - because your collaged surface blended with your painterly imagery unfolds before you in unexpected and delightful ways that you could not have dreamed up if you were simply working with paint on canvas.

To push the envelope even further, you can integrate a wide array of pastes, gels and mediums into areas of your work.  Each unique material adds certain textures and sculptural properties, giving your piece depth, dimension and a tactile quality that begs to be touched. This is where the "how did you do that?" question comes into play -  as the layers start to blend and merge, they create a very complex array of visual intrigue, always leaving the viewer wondering about the process...

Listed below are descriptions of some Golden gels, pastes and mediums that can be used in Painterly Collage to create interesting textures and surfaces:

  • Molding Paste - smooth, non-porous surface
  • Light Molding Paste - very porous, holds textural marks
  • Absorbent Ground - also known as "liquid watercolor paper"
  • Acrylic Ground for Pastels- toothy surface, great for painting or drawing
  • Micaceous Iron Oxide - dark gray and slightly glittery, very gritty, great for pastel, shows off bright opaque color
  • Fine Pumice Gel - toothy surface, nice for OPEN paints
  • Fiber Paste - looks like handmade paper when dry, very absorbent, great for watercolor effects
  • Self Leveling Gel Gloss Medium- best brushed on in thin layers for an overall glossy finish
  • Soft Gel Matte Medium - best adhesive for collage work, great for "faux encaustic"
  • Soft Gel Gloss Medium - good adhesive, good glossy surface
  • Crackle Paste - unusual crackle surface when dried. Apply thinly for small cracks, thickly for large crack

The sheer amount of creative options can get overwhelming - and most artists want to explore a material before buying it, that's why I offer these materials free of charge, for use in my classes.
