Jenny Baker
2012-2013 DP/PC Chapter President

We are halfway through our year, and we have a lot coming up these next few months. I would like to remind everyone that our next monthly meeting will not be at the Lakeland Yacht & Country Club. We are hosting our Media Spring Training event at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale on Tuesday, March 19. This is a great opportunity for you to receive media relations tips firsthand from local media experts representing radio, print, television and digital outlets. Be sure to get your RSVPs in through our website (www.fprapolk.org). Also, thank you to all our wonderful sponsors for this event - Watson Clinic, A-C-T, Bartow Regional Medical Center, MADRID Engineering Group, Inc. and SEMCO Construction.

Let me also remind you of our local image awards competition being held at our April 17th monthly luncheon meeting. I hope you are preparing your projects as the deadline is fast approaching -- Friday, March 8th. This is a great opportunity to receive feedback from judges before entering your work in the Golden Image Awards at state annual conference.  If you have any questions, please contact our chair, Marybeth Soderstrom, (Marybeth_Soderstrom@polkworks.org) for this event.

Our last event of this year is our 2nd Annual Carillon Classic 5k Run & Walk. If you would like to help with the planning, volunteer for the day of or participate in the race, please contact one of our co-chairs Katy Martin (Katy.Martin@lrmc.com) or Marybeth for details on what they need. This is a fundraiser, not only for our chapter, but also the Harris Shelter in Bartow, so be sure to help spread the word about this wonderful event. More information can be found on our website: http://www.fprapolk.org/calendar-page/carillon-classic-5k-runwalk

If you weren't at our February monthly meeting you might have missed the news that Amy Wiggins has taken on the position of vice president this year on top of her treasurer duties. We are very fortunate to have Amy Wiggins on our board this year. She has amazing ideas and I can't wait to see what she has in store for our chapter when she takes over as chapter president when her turn arises. Please be sure to welcome Amy to this new position when you get a chance.

Our state board meeting was February 23 in Gainesville. I would like to thank Danny Kushmer and Katy Martin for attending.  I will be on maternity leave for close to three months. I plan on returning back to work around May 13th.  If you need to get in touch with me while I'm home, please email me at JennyUNF@aol.com or call my cell phone 863-559-6425. I look forward to seeing you all when I return to our April monthly meeting.

February Meeting Recap

Jamie Brown and Donna Wood

During our February luncheon meeting, DP/PC FPRA members and guests were joined by Jamie Brown, public information officer at the Winter Haven Police Department and Donna Wood, public information officer at the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Donna and Jamie are no strangers to our chapter - both having taken on board leadership roles through the years, with Donna serving as our president in 2010-2011.

Donna and Jamie addressed the role of a public relations professional in law enforcement and posed the question,"What would you do if we called?"  For example, if an employee at your organization was faced with criminal charges - how would you answer questions from the media and maintain your company's positive image? Or, what if your company was threatened by a mass casualty event?  In either situation, Donna and Jamie said preparation and practice is crucial.

The dynamic duo also described what happens when there is a major emergency:

- Their agency receives an emergency call for dispatch

- The deputy is dispatched

- The SWAT team arrives with the command post

- The PIOs issue a media alert

- A timeline is established for the first news briefing

- The teams diligently work until the scene is cleared

Jamie and Donna said the bottom line is this: you must plan for the worst and expect the best.  They ended the discussion offering themselves as a resource - so be sure to get them on your speed dial and let them know if you are interested in conducting a mock exercise!
